Star Crossed is a story of first love and friendship. Fliss and her friends Mari and Victoria have enrolled in a summer theatre company and the play they will perform at the end of the summer is Romeo and Juliet. Fliss is an adorable character who is extraordinarily shy. Mari is a very confident girl who doesn't know when to hold her tongue. Victoria is a little more sensitive and also I think a little ditsy. They are all super excited to be in the play but none more so than Fliss who loves Romeo and Juliet and has read it many times. Mari and Victoria encourage Fliss to audition for the part of Juliet. It is her dream role but she doesn't really feel confident enough to put herself forward. Especially when the pushy and melodramatic Samantha is determined to bag herself the best role whatever the consequences. Fliss avoids conflict at all costs. But is she willing to let the chance to audition for the play's leading lady pass her by?

Fliss's shyness extends beyond avoiding conflict and not standing up for herself. It also stops her from speaking to the boy that makes her heart flutter and her cheeks blush. Tom Mayerling is a boy that all the girls think is handsome. Unfortunately, that includes the brash Samantha and she is ready to put her paws all over him and brand him with a red hot iron stating that he is her property.

Star Crossed is a wonderful sweet novel for tween readers. It is a fun and engaging read which explores a painfully shy character. For girls who are about to step over the threshold of looking at a boy and seeing a boy to looking at a boy and seeing a heart-fluttering potential boyfriend, this is the perfect story. The pace moved rapidly through the scenes both in terms of the novel and the play itself. I did feel the dialogue may have been a bit too careful. Yes this is for younger readers but I think they are much more streetwise than the author portrayed at times. However, that does mean that you could buy this book for a friend's daughter and not worry about inappropriate content.

Summer in this novel is decidedly English. It rains. There is stormy weather. But there are also sunny days where the girls lie back and enjoy ice cream. The romance was heart-warming and had some beautifully atmospheric and dramatic moments.

Overall, an entertaining story about first love, growing into your own skin and friendship. Fun and swiftly paced, I think this will appeal to fans of Meg Cabot's Princess Diaries series. This is a book I would have been besotted with at the age of eleven.

Thank you to Random House for sending me the book to review.

I had to wrestle with my sister to have the privilege of reading this book first. It didn't matter if she was closer in age to the reading audience, or, like Fliss, she is more likely to act in a play - I has a feeling I'd love this book just as much and I was not wrong! We shared oohs and aahs and agitation over Star Crossed and we both enjoyed this treat.

Fliss is such a lovely character, because in every one of us there's an inner Fliss. Shy and demure, she finds acting her passion and escape. Her mother disapproves of the one thing she feel she's good at. She hates confrontations and would more likely follow than lead. But once she's on stage, her confidence strengthens and her inner strength is revealed. I related well with her thoughts and concerns, despite my age being past the teens years. Which is why I think her character relates to many across age groups, mostly teens, or at the very least reminds you of what it was like to be in pursuit of one's passion. Fliss grows and learns to overcome her insecurities in Star Crossed. It should be very helpful to younger teens as it's not only narrated conversationally, but also in a way that's easy to digest. By that I don't mean it being fickle, but more towards it being easy to follow, hence easily relatable to teenage dilemmas.

Star Crossed also features a great villain, and a handsome prince charming. Samantha plays the perfect villain, who reminds me of fairy tale villains with roots in reality. Tom, the object of Fliss' affection, is also similarly rooted in the middle ground. I think therefore, Star Crossed is a great book for teens who still loves fairy tales but are slowly moving towards more teenage titles. Samantha, villainous as she is, has more to her than just the physical. Her insecurities play a huge role in what she does and why. Of course, despite my dislike of her, when I discovered that (of course) she's not so evil after all, I wanted to read more about her. Hopefully the next book!

How classic is it that your crush plays Romeo when you play Juliet? I'd have loved to change the ending if it were me! So of course my inner fan girl squealed and rejoiced in the romance in Star Crossed - very cute! Reminds me of all the ups and downs, the speculations and stolen stares, the sighs and tears you undergo when nursing that lovely first love.

Star Crossed is an entertaining read and a lovely book all around!

Star Crossed is the first book in the Sweet Hearts series, which is perfect for younger teen readers, particularly those who are fans of girly fiction by the likes of Luisa Plaja, Liz Rettig and Carmen Reid. It's a quick, enjoyable read set against the backdrop of a Romeo and Juliet theatre production, and is one of those books that sunny summer days were invented for.

Fliss, Tom and Samantha were the most memorable characters for me, though I didn't get as invested in Fliss and Tom's romantic chemistry as much as I'd have liked. Fliss was a character I could relate to through her shy nature and inability to stand up for herself, and I was glad to see that she had evolved quite a lot by the end of the book. Cotterill addresses themes of confidence and believing in yourself, which I think is important for a lot of teenagers to read about. I know I certainly struggled with that in the past, as I'm sure many other teens do, and realising you're not alone is a great lesson to learn.

I really didn't like Fliss's mum, Jeanette, who was one of the most loathsome parental characters I've come across recently. She in no way supported Fliss in her dream of being an actress, not even at secondary school level. I think parents should support their children in whatever they do and, though that doesn't always happen in real life, I still think it's a good message to put out there. I don't like reading about parents who constantly put their children down, and that's the problem I had here, minor though it was.

Star Crossed is definitely on the lighter side of teen fiction. It doesn't delve into too much mature territory, and instead chooses to focus on relatable topics that won't be hard for most teenagers to tap into. Family life, first crushes and classmate enemies are all on the cards for readers of this book, and I think we can expect similar things from the next instalment, Strictly Friends. When I need a feel-good read, I know what I'll be turning to.

Star Crossed is the story of Fliss – a young girl who dreams of becoming an actress when she leaves school. She is cast as Juliet in her school’s production of Romeo and Juliet, but it is obvious that her mother doesn’t support her in her dreams of an acting career. Her leading man is Tom, a boy she has had a crush on for ages. However, Fliss is too shy to tell him how she feels and he seems to be getting very close to Samantha, who is confident and always seems to get what she wants. It is up to Fliss to be confident enough in herself to stand up to her mum about her love of acting and to let Tom know how she feels about him.

I really liked the character of Fliss. She is incredibly shy but is able to come out of herself on stage and she gains confidence by pretending to be someone else for a while. And although Fliss is scared of confrontation she finds the strength to stand up for herself when her role in the play and her friendship with Tom hang in the balance.

Fliss’s friends, Victoria and Mari, are good supporting characters and Mari in particular provides some funny moments. I wasn’t keen on Tom as a romantic interest for Fliss. His relationship with Samantha shows him to be quite weak and willing to just go with the flow, rather than working for something that he really wants.

The storyline flowed well and I found it to be realistic in regards to the issues facing teenage girls. However, a lot of the story is made up of these girls sitting around and chatting, and I often found myself hoping that something more would happen.

Overall, it was an enjoyable read with a nice ending and I think young girls will enjoy Star Crossed.

This is a sweet book and I enjoyed it. I really liked the central character Fliss. She’s very nice and wants to do the right thing, even when that means letting someone walk all over her. For me, the story was more about her learning to have confidence and stand up for herself than the romance between her and Tom.

As for the other characters I really liked her friend Mari. She had attitude and I really liked that – she was definitely not afraid to stand up for herself! I also liked Fliss’ mum and could understand where she was coming from. She had to really struggle to raise Fliss and she desperately wants a better life for her daughter - even if that means sacrificing Fliss’ dreams. I liked how the relationship between the two developed, how they started to understand each other better and learn from each other.

As for Tom – he was okay. He kind of annoyed me a bit but he was sweet towards Fliss. I just didn’t feel that invested in their relationship which was a bit of a shame. But it’s a minor quibble. There were just more interesting elements to the story for me but that may have been because I’m older than the intended audience.

Overall - A light, fun read that will really appeal to younger teens. I really liked the Romeo and Juliet backdrop and think other readers will too. A really cute read.

Star Crossed

YA Romance (Also suitable for younger teens.)

I thought that the characterisation of Fliss and Mari were excellent. I could really connect with Fliss's character as she was so honest about things. The story revolves around a production of the Shakespeare play Romeo and Juliet. Fliss lands up with the role of Juliet much to the disapproval of her mother who doesn't think drama is a realistic option for Fliss. The boy who plays Romeo Tom is not only good-looking but has an honest heart deep down inside.

Star Crossed deals with the themes of first love, friends, heartbreaks and family ties. It is suitable for to read for ages 11 and up.

What knocked off one star for me was that some of the story, in particular towards the end started to become that little bit predictable. I kind of knew what was going to happen at the end before it reached the end. I would have liked it to be more of a mystery so that the reader can keep turning those pages and be prepared for a emotional reaction.
