fascinating and educating translation notes throughout the stories really illuminate small tidbits about life in the soviet union - but the stories, in my opinion, are best read as a sociocultural/historical exercise rather than for literature enjoyment (with the exception of maybe the first, barsukov triangle, which is enjoyable on its own).
