A charming series of adventures for younger readers, featuring a family of all sorts of animals that live in the farmyard behind the tumble-down barn on Mudpuddle Farm.
Sir Michael Andrew Morpurgo, OBE, FRSL is the author of many books for children, five of which have been made into films. He also writes his own screenplays and libretti for opera. Born in St Albans, Hertfordshire, in 1943, he was evacuated to Cumberland during the last years of the Second World War, then returned to London, moving later to Essex. After a brief and unsuccessful spell in the army, he took up teaching and started to write. He left teaching after ten years in order to set up 'Farms for City Children' with his wife. They have three farms in Devon, Wales and Gloucestershire, open to inner city school children who come to stay and work with the animals. In 1999 this work was publicly recognised when he and his wife were invested a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to youth. In 2003, he was advanced to an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). He became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature (FRSL) in 2004. He was knighted in the 2018 for his services to literature and charity. He is also a father and grandfather, so children have always played a large part in his life. Every year he and his family spend time in the Scilly Isles, the setting for three of his books.
We have been working our way through these stories alongside other books since the summer, and just finished the final tale, Mums the Word, this evening. Good fun, simple farmyard animal stories where all the animals chat and interact and have eccentric personalities. We did like how the illustrations worked and it was like a cross between a comic book and a regular story book.
Obviously goes without saying it’s for younger readers, huge font and allots of illustrations, ideal for 6-8year olds! Also the fact that it’s such a thick book is good cause that could give a child a real sense of accomplishment, finishing a big book! 4/5
I have a slight confession to make. I have only read so far a selection of the animal stories that Michael Morpurgo has written. I have others in my collection so hopefully I will be able to get to them soon.
Mudpuddle Farm is a collection of animal stories set on Mudpuddle Farm. They are aimed at younger readers as they are easy to read and follow. They are set around a collection of farmyard animals. Each set of two stories making up the six in total is set around a different animal.
A cute collection of stories about the colourful animals on Mudpuddle Farm and the crazy things they get up to. From a naughty piglet who think he can fly to a clever Goose who can solve any problem.
This is a fun book for all ages, from reading to your younger kids to older readers reading it for themselves.
The fun stories are complimented by cute illustrations by Shoo Rayner help complete this adorable collection.
I like the book because its funny and it has lots of pages but the reason it doesn't take that long to read is that it doesn't have much written inside the pages
