When Papa Smurf leaves the Village on an errand, the Smurfs are left without their leader. The Smurfs decide to vote for a new leader while Papa Smurf is gone, but each Smurf votes for himself! I used to watch the Smurfs cartoon when I was a kid but I have never read any of the comics until recently and I have to say, they are much better. With the story of King Smurf, Peyo does a great job of being hilarious and making a social commenatry at the same time. Perfect from every aspect.

Non ricordavo quanto fosse profonda e metaforica la storia del Re Puffo pur nella sua semplicità.
Per certi tratti riecheggia Il signore delle mosche.
Puffasinfonia in do è una storia bella e gradevole, ma non al livello del Re Puffo (o il Puffissimo).

До третього тому коміксів про смурфиків увійшли дві історії: «Король Смурф» і «Смурфонія Фа-Смурф». Перша з них довша і серйозніша, і досить сильно мене здивувала недитячістю піднятих тем, адже це така собі політика для найменшеньких. Тато Смурф змушений вирушити у тривалу подорож і за його відсутності смурфи майже одразу відчувають необхідність обрання тимчасового лідера. Обирають його демократичним шляхом — голосуванням, але, на жаль, як знають усі дорослі, навіть демократія іноді працює наче зламаний механізм. Один зі смурфів швидко оцінив переваги популістських обіцянок, схиливши на свій бік більшість населення, тож на виборах обирають не найрозумнішого чи найгіднішого кандидата, а того, хто найкраще наловчився працювати з електоратом. Новообраний очільник оголошує себе королем, вимагає поклоніння, примушує смурфів збудувати собі розкішний палац, ув'язнює невинного за надуману провину... Мені, дорослій, читати все це було болісно і тригерно, але справді цікаво, як сприймуть таку оповідку дошкільнята, які є цільовою аудиторією книжечок про смурфів? До слова, буде там і підпілля, і доноси, і війна, а завершиться все лише тоді, коли до села повернеться Тато Смурф, який дорікає своїм смурфикам: "Ви поводилися, наче люди!"

Two and a Half Stars. The best of the collected Smurfs volumes thus far (damning with faint praise though that may be) including Peyo's standard art throughout, several larger panels featuring more interesting line work and attention to detail lacking from the majority of portrait-on-monocolor-background fare. It's all fine but still not terribly stand-out.
Story-wise, The Smurfony as supplementary tale is little more than a means to introduce the villain Gargamel (who dabbled in some delightfully problematic cross-dressing villainy) within the chronology of this series' publication order and has little else to say beyond perhaps a curious inference that humoring a friend's lack of a particular talent is preferable to critiquing it and pointing them in a direction more suitable to their gifts. Even that much extrapolation is probably overthinking it, considering the general slapstick action pervading this yarn.
The Smurf King, however, is a mostly decent, lightly prodding satire of direct democracy, electoral pandering, the fickleness and easy persuadability of a complacent voting populace, the inherent reflexes toward coerced labor, political persecution and physical violence of the statist and the necessity of rebelling from and fighting back against tyranny. Unfortunately, the story's themes are mostly deflated in the final couple pages with a too-quick-to-forgive group hug wrap-up where any earnestness is abandoned in favor of the Smurfs remaining friends "because." Despite the significant wrongs perpetrated against them by the titular "King" and the attendant consequences he has more than earned, the latter are hand-waved away in scarecrow effigy to officiate a neat, tidy close for the sake of the child[ish]-- arbitrary for arbitrary's sake.

'De smurführer' is in mijn ogen een van de beste naoorlogse Europese strips: het is niet minder dan een satire op de opkomst van Hitler in Duitsland en nog immer een waarschuwing voor het gevaar van populisme en machtshonger. Het is ongelooflijk dat zo'n sterke satire te vinden is bij zo'n 'onschuldige' en populaire kinderstrip.
Wanneer de grote smurf vertrekt, ontstaat er in het smurfendorp een machtsvacuüm. Deze proberen de smurfen met verkiezingen op te lossen, maar iedereen stemt op zichzelf. Dan blijkt er één smurf die probeert de anderen over te halen op om hém te stemmen. Hij vat zijn strategie kernachtig samen op blz. 6: "Dat is geweldig! Je hoeft alleen beloften te doen!" Het moge duidelijk zijn dat eenmaal aan de macht de smurf niet één van zijn beloften gestand doet, maar zich snel ontpopt tot tiran. Het gaat snel van kwaad tot erger, maar gelukkig is dit het smurfenuniversum en vallen er doden noch gewonden, en met de terugkeer van de grote smurf is alles weer pais en vree.
Bij dit alles vergeten Peyo en Delporte de humor niet. Vooral de zoektocht naar de rebellen is een hoogtepunt van hilariteit.
Het tweede verhaal, Smurfonie in Ut, is hierbij vergeleken veel minder spectaculair, al is Gargamel als "mooie toverfee" heerlijk belachelijk.

I have a 1977 hardback reprint in French from Dargaud (originally published in 1965 and serialised in Spirou magazine in 1964), which has languished for a couple of decades in the attic.
This collection of two stories was a childhood favourite and it remains very good in the eyes of an adult, a pleasure to reread time and again. The formula works just right, however simple it is.
The first, titular, story is a nice piece of social satire under the simple jokes, lampooning populists and demagogues as well as moralists who suck up to power. The anarchic subtext I mentioned concerning the previous album comes to the surface here. Politics in a kiddie’s cartoon? Well I never.
The second is a straightforward adventure to defeat the baddie, simple but tightly plotted, with a message of inclusion, that everyone has worth and can be a hero whatever their faults.
Which contrasts a bit with the treatment of the glasses-wearing moraliser, but he’s a definite target of satire.
A positive collection, this one.

Le Grand Schtroumpf momentanément parti, les Schtroumpfs décident d'élire leur prochain chef. C'est alors qu'un d'eux manipule les autres pour arriver à ses fins, et se déclare "Schtroumpfissime". S'ensuivra alors un conflit qui déchirera le village, entre ceux fidèles au nouveau leader et ceux décriant ses dérives.
Une excellente allégorie du fascisme, présentée de façon simple pour les enfants mais soulignant les points importants : corruption de la démocratie, division du peuple et répression des opposants. Un album des plus réussis de Peyo.

Dua cerita dalam satu komik. Yang pertama adalah Smurf King. Meskipun saya tidak terlalu setuju soal politik masuk ke dalam komik anak-anak, tapi dalam cerita ini saya kira orang dewasa pun bisa mengambil pelajaran tentang ambisi yang keliru. Cerita kedua adalah tentang smurf yang selalu sumbang membawakan nada yang pada akhirnya ia malah menjadi pahlawan dalam cerita.

Papá Pitufo sale de la aldea por unos días y se disputa quien mandará en la aldea, hay unas votaciones y el Pitufo ganador se transforma en el rey Pitufo, pero no todos están de acuerdo con su tiranía y hay dos bandos, los que lo apoyan y los rebeldes desatando una guerra que termina con la llegada de papá Pitufo y todo vuelve a la normalidad.

I read this as a kid many times. Having fun, and being, maybe, a little in awe of the gold-clad smurf and his grand palace. Re-reading it, its politically poignancy is striking, and the book is even more funny than I knew as a kid.

"Smerf Naczelnik" to jeden z hitów dzieciństwa - czytałem to tyle razy, że powtórka po... prawie 30 latach pokazuje, że pamiętam prawie wszystkie kadry. "Smerfsymfonia" to z kolei perełka slapsticku.
(i tylko szkoda z że mój oryginał zaginął, ale nowe wydanie jest bardzo ok)

Une lecture légère, drôle. On suit les aventures farfelues des Schtroumpfs. J'aimais regarder le dessin animé pendant mon enfance, alors ça me fait plaisir de redécouvrir l'univers des Schtroumpfs dans ces BD.

Très bonne analyse et critique du monde moderne et de l'appauvrissement des plus démunis et de l'enrichissement démesuré des plus riches (pas seulement les hommes puissants, mais les gens riches) cette bande dessinée et en plus agréable et facile à lire pour les plus jeunes.

Peyo fait une parodie des régimes autoritaires à travers son lot de jeux de mots et de gags bien pensés. Les Schtroumpfs sont déchirés en deux partis, les fidèles du schtroumpfissime et les rebelles qui se battent pour la liberté. Il s'agit aussi d'une critique de la démocratie puisque le schtroumpfissime est parvenu au pouvoir grâce à sa démagogie mais n'a absolument pas respecté sa parole lorsqu'il est devenu souverain.
