Several letters from Mr Baker to David are now before us, and we cannot avoid noticing the line of instruction, which, by the blessing of the Spirit, brought peace to his soul. For this purpose we insert the following letter; and it should be remarked that every portion of Scripture referred to in the letter, was most carefully and repeatedly examined by him. "My Dear Friend--My desire for your spiritual establishment and growth, induces me to spend a short time this evening in penning a few lines on what has formed the basis of our conversation lately, viz.--(Eph. ii.) I think it well to fix our minds steadfastly on some particular portion which the Spirit of God seems especially to have brought before us, and for the present, I think, none is more suitable than the richly instructive chapter--(Eph. ii.) No human statements or explanations can equal those presented by the Divine word; for the pure word is the true food for the soul--the true seed, which, when deposited in the heart, and watered by the Spirit, produces life and fruitfulness. There are two distinct portions in this chapter; viz.--verses 1--10 show what we were, dead, but now alive through him who died for us; and verses 11-22 take another view, and show that we were out of Christ, not in covenant, not at peace with God, and not near to God; but now in Christ we are brought into covenant, are made at peace, and are brought nigh--so that (verses 19-22) we become fellow-citizens with the saints, and are lively stones of the spiritual house. "It forms a key to the delightful truths of the chapter, to observe that from v. 1-10 the Apostle views our past and present state in one light, and from v. 11-22 in another light.
