Jun'ichirō Tanizaki (谷崎 潤一郎) was a Japanese author, and one of the major writers of modern Japanese literature, perhaps the most popular Japanese novelist after Natsume Sōseki.

Some of his works present a rather shocking world of sexuality and destructive erotic obsessions; others, less sensational, subtly portray the dynamics of family life in the context of the rapid changes in 20th-century Japanese society.

Frequently his stories are narrated in the context of a search for cultural identity in which constructions of "the West" and "Japanese tradition" are juxtaposed. The results are complex, ironic, demure, and provocative.

In these two short novels, Tanizaki continues to explore the theme of obsession.

Ashikari, the narrator of the first novella, sets the stage with a longish (a third of this novella’s length) description of his exploration of shrines and sites in the Osaka area where he happens upon a man who tells him the story of his father’s obsession with Oyu. As is Tanizaki’s Naomi, and some of his other characters, the object of obsession is self involved and cruel to the obsessed.

The second novella also begins with an historical exploration where the author visits the grave sites of Shunkin and her “follower” and “guide”, Sasuke. In this novella, Sasuke’s obsession is complicated by the “upstairs/downstairs” nature of their relationship.

In both these novellas, as in other Tanizaki works, the objects of obsession are females in higher wealth and social standing than the obsessed. In both, to the reader, the obsessed pay dearly for the obsession, and to the obsessed, there appears to be no other way.

The prose is formal and uses sparse but specific words. Shocking behavior comes unexpectedly and is narrated in understated short sentences. The concept once said is not amplified; it merely becomes part of the story. Tanizaki’s economy of words, was most likely ahead of its time. The content might appear to be ahead of its time, but has the dark elements of a Grim fairy tale.

A month or so ago I read Tanizaki’s book on his childhood. From it, it was easy to see the seeds of the The Makioka Sisters. So much of Tanizaki’s other work is on obsession, and from Childhood Years, there is no clue how he came to devote so many pages to this topic.

„Choćby Shunkin miała największy talent muzyczny, trudno jednak poznać najwyższą prawdę sztuki bez zakosztowania smaku cierpienia i goryczy życia” (173).

Shunkin tinha muitos talentos, a família a respeitava e investia nela.

Begining was boring to death. However ater those grey 30 pages it bebome better. First story was not specially insightful. (To me at least, but do not suggest. I might be in fact really literary immature) Two men meets accidentally (or did they really?) on the river island whilst full moon. The mistery one tells the story of his tradition to watch the moon every year. Weird love triangle of awfully Oyu, her poor sister Oshizu and his father who is cruel in his passion for Oyu. This woman is described as the perfect one and treated as a goddess (with no specific reason).

The second one is a story of a blind noblewoman and her servant whom she was teaching how to play an instrument. It is clear to me that she loved him, but the pride of figuring higher on a social ladder made her treat him any better than she would treat a flea. They even had a son, which she gave away. All caused by her pride. As we read the story it seems that that's all. She is cruel to him in order to teach him better and is blind (ambiguously) to his feelings he has for her. But no. There's more. One of the vicious people that hated her, sneak into her room at night and burn her face with hot water. That is the most tragic thing that could ever happen to her. She is crying in isolation. He plucked out his eyes to make her pleased that she will not be seen by him since they are stucked for each other presence. And since he loses his sight, he serves her until she dies with no changes in their relationship. She loved him and he loved her, but she allowed herself to not treat him as equal
