Sam Epstein (November 22, 1909 - January 31, 2000) was an American author of juvenile non-fiction books. Starting in 1938, Sam, along with his wife Beryl Williams Epstein, jointly wrote over 120 books.
Although Sam is often individually credited for many of the books, Beryl played a major role in their creation. While Epstein and his wife had very different writing styles, they took turns writing chapters and editing each other’s work, enabling their styles to blend together. The couple contributed numerous titles to several children’s book series, including the Real Books, All About, and Franklin Watts First Book series.
They also wrote the Ken Holt Mystery series under the name Bruce Campbell.
***Due to its age this book may contain some triggers and also some politically insensitive language to sensitive readers as well as possible outdated information***
The bright cover was definitely an attraction for this book as well as the fact that it is also an older book, which hones my curiosity.
All About the Desert is a wildcard for me. The book itself is rather wordy and takes a rather roundabout way to reach any given point while written in a very dry manner. As a result it had a hard time of keeping my interests at all...
At the same time the book does explore such topics as the camel corps of the American Southwest and other desert explorers, how desert travel is accomplished using either camel caravans or other trivia that now seems left out of contemporary books on the same subject.
All in all it has its good points offset by its bad parts and thus would make for a good read for the curious.
