Two young boys find some very unusual new pets in this short story from a Grand Master of Science Fiction.

Tagging along while his astronomer father visits an industrialist at his vast estate, young Slim is lucky enough to make fast friends with the industrialist’s son, Red, who has recently caught some very strange animals on the property. The animals seem intelligent enough, and Red recruits Slim to help him train the odd creatures to do circus tricks. But the boys are about to discover their playthings aren’t exactly animals — and they’ve allowed themselves to be caught for a reason...

Youth is a riveting tale from the author of countless classics, including I, Robot and the Foundation trilogy which won the Hugo Award for Best All-Time Series. Youth first appeared in the May 1952 issue of Space Science Fiction and was reprinted in the 1955 collection The Martian Way and Other Stories. Youth is one of the rare Asimov stories with alien characters.

Works of prolific Russian-American writer Isaac Asimov include popular explanations of scientific principles, The Foundation Trilogy (1951-1953), and other volumes of fiction.

Isaac Asimov, a professor of biochemistry, wrote as a highly successful author, best known for his books.

Asimov, professor, generally considered of all time, edited more than five hundred books and ninety thousand letters and postcards. He published in nine of the ten major categories of the Dewey decimal classification but lacked only an entry in the category of philosophy (100).

People widely considered Asimov, a master of the genre alongside Robert Anson Heinlein and Arthur Charles Clarke as the "big three" during his lifetime. He later tied Galactic Empire and the Robot into the same universe as his most famous series to create a unified "future history" for his stories much like those that Heinlein pioneered and Cordwainer Smith and Poul Anderson previously produced. He penned "Nightfall," voted in 1964 as the best short story of all time; many persons still honor this title. He also produced well mysteries, fantasy, and a great quantity of nonfiction. Asimov used Paul French, the pen name, for the Lucky Starr, series of juvenile novels.

Most books of Asimov in a historical way go as far back to a time with possible question or concept at its simplest stage. He often provides and mentions well nationalities, birth, and death dates for persons and etymologies and pronunciation guides for technical terms. Guide to Science, the tripartite set Understanding Physics, and Chronology of Science and Discovery exemplify these books.

Asimov, a long-time member, reluctantly served as vice president of Mensa international and described some members of that organization as "brain-proud and aggressive about their IQs." He took more pleasure as president of the humanist association. The asteroid 5020 Asimov, the magazine Asimov's Science Fiction, an elementary school in Brooklyn in New York, and two different awards honor his name.

I Mean, It’s Asimov!

Two youngsters discover a spaceship that has crash-landed, and decides to make pets of the occupants. After all, the circus is coming to town and this can make them famous.

But their parents interfere when they discover their secret, as parents are want to do. So the “aliens,” who appear to be friendly are sent on their way.

This is not the end of the story…

Five fabulous stars. ✨✨✨✨✨

Even if the dialogues are kind of obsolete, it was a nice story and the ending took me by surprise, so much that I had to browse it again right away.

Youth is a short but sweet science fiction novella depicting contact with alien civilization. It takes place in far future, focuses on mistaken identity but is not without humour. It is told in third person narrative voice with a heavy use of dialogues so the reader gets to an insight into the story from everyone's perspective. The story is told from the perspective of fathers to two boys, the two boys themselves and two aliens whom the boys capture and mistake for animals. Female characters briefly appear in the form of wife/mother (did she even have a name?) and a bad tempered cook and do little more than scream. Well, you know strong female characters aren't really Asimov's thing, so what can you expect? Moving on.

The plot is simple. A ship of rather small aliens crashes Earth and all of them (but two) are killed in the crash. The aliens' motivation for visiting Earth is all business. The aliens had made telepathic contact with one astronomer (prior to crash) and had reason to believe a mutually profitable collaboration with Earth dwellers shall follow. However, after the crash the two remaining aliens are captured by a boy Red who mistakes them for animals and plans to keep them as a circus attractions. Despite being armed, the aliens do not want to use their weapons to hurt Red because they recognize him for what he is- a young of an intelligent species. Aliens remain held captive by these two boys: Slim and Red (who have just made friends and sworn to secrecy). Meanwhile, Slim's astronomer father visits the country estate of an important industrialist and tells him of his contact with space aliens who want to do trade. They have no idea their sons are holding the aliens captive. When they do not hear from the aliens, the astronomer and the industrialist go out looking for them. The question is: will the adults find the ship? If so, will they connect the dots and keep looking? Will the boys keep the aliens alive or accidentally kill or starve them? Will the aliens turn on the boys? Will there be contact established? How will it all end?

The writing is so simple and yet so brilliant. The portray of aliens was well done. I like how the author made it seem that it would be impossible for humans to recognize aliens as anything but animals without closer inspection. This was Stanislaw Lem's view as well, in his novel Eden the scientist assume aliens to be some kind of animals and only on closer inspection do they realize they are intelligent. Lem's writing was even more pessimistic on this point, though. Asimov realized that contact with alien civilization would be difficult and challenging, but he still believed it to be possible. Hence, the more humorous and cheerful approach to the subject of first contact.

All in all, I loved Youth. Yes, the plot is a bit predictable but I enjoyed it all the same. This novella is just what I needed today. I went to bed in pain yesterday, woke up with more pain and a growing fever this morning and was miserable for most of the day. I desperately needed something to cheer me up, a book that would be interesting but not too difficult. So, I checked project Gutenberg looking for some vintage Asimov I could read on my cellphone and found this wonderful novella. Youth was just what the doctor ordered. This is absolutely the perfect book for lovers of vintage SF. Highly recommended for fans of Asimov!

This cute story from 1952 introduces us to Red and Slim, two youngsters with a secret. Their fathers, The Industrialist and The Astronomer, are waiting for the arrival of some people from another world who want to trade with the people of this unnamed planet. Little do our youngsters realize that their secret could jeopardize the whole plan.

I liked this story, but I do wish I had not seen the illustrations, as they completely gave away the ending twist before I even had time to think about there being one. The entire punch of the ending revolves around the reader not realizing up to that point what the native inhabitants of this planet actually look like. All we know until then is that they are big. Really, really big.

I did like the story, thought it was clever and all, but I have a vague disappointed feeling about it, as though it was too predictable, perhaps. Maybe that just comes from those illustrations.

A very Ray Bradbury like tale, which I suppose is to be expected from Asimov. I liked it, even though it felt a very vintage 1952 view of space. I remember the first Star Wars movie when it was released in the 1970's, the scene in the bar was so cutting edge, it took your breath...and we had already had Star Trek to draw on. I can imagine this story was exactly that in 1952. It is still enjoyable.

I thought this was a brilliant short story and was surprised to see so many mixed reviews. I read the Open Road Media ebook version of the story. There were no illustrations, and I'm glad because part of what kept my interest was considering all of the unknowns. I knew it was by Isaac Asimov and originally published in 1952. Everything else was left to imagination.

After reading other reviews, I think that there may be two reasons I enjoyed it so much while other people did not. The first is the difference in editions, since this has been published numerous times over the years; the second is that I don't consume a lot of science fiction. I love Star Wars, Twilight Zone, a few others, but I am more of a casual fan of sci fi. Maybe after a certain level of immersion, short stories like this lose some of their magic, but I'm happy to say that's not the case with me and I thought it was great fun and a timeless story of unpredictable youth. Ah, youth!

It's less than 40 pages, avoid any spoilers & give it a quick read the next time you're looking for an escape!

4.4 stars. Amazing! The story had a brilliant plot, which misled its reader from the beginning till the end. The twist at the end of the story completely transformed the reader's perception of what was believed to be the angle in which the whole story was written.

Two young boys gets to take care of some very unusual pets, aliens. A short story. Ended to fast for my liking but felt finished anywho. Have read a few of Isaac Asimov works here and there but want to delve more into his works sooner rather then later!

Youth is one of the stories I wanted to read for a very long time.

With perfect success rate I deflected all of the spoilers thrown at me over the years and was rewarded for it nicely at the end of the book. It has quite an unexpected twist!

It also helped that I listened to the audiobook, whose makers had more common sense than some previous book publishers who actually featured a major spoiler right on the book cover. *shakes head in disbelief*

Story itself is a classic short story by Isaac Asimov. One of his many wild ideas that, while not warranting a full novel, still deserved to be properly explored.

And I'm glad it was, for it raised many questions. Especially at the end.

"Are we alone in the universe?", "Can aliens travel between stars?", "Are they already here?" and alike.

Similarly-themed books usually inspire similar questions, too. And although many, all could be addressed during lunch time with your friends. 'Conversation points' would be a better name for them.

In the end, not a masterpiece of epic proportions we're used to seeing from Asimov, but certainly a fun and enjoyable read. Also, short.

Performance by Kitty Hendrix was very good. Never had an opportunity to listen to her works, and here I was pleasantly surprised.

This book has been provided to me free of charge in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Kitty, I really had a good time.

4* and a recommendation for Asimov fans and appreciators of short Sci-Fi stories.

So the universe is not quite as you thought it was? You’d better rearrange your beliefs, then. Because you certainly can’t rearrange the universe.

“You are right in one thing, at any rate. The world has been at peace too long. We are losing a healthy sense of suspicion.”

Classic old-school science fiction from one of the masters. First published in 1952. Told first person by the titular youth. However, only 44 pages long. (I'm embarrassed to claim credit for reading a book.) You can see where it's going, even if the characters can't. Good writing.

“The youngster has done no harm. You simply scold him for being young.”

That is a problem with some ebooks: I don't mind getting short stories from Project Gutenberg (https://www.gutenberg.org), but two "books" I paid for were truncated.

Well written, imaginative and surprising

By Charles van Buren on February 6, 2018

Format: Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase

This review is from the Kindle edition of the Open Roads Media, Sci-fi and Fantasy, May 2, 2017, edition of this 39 page story. The description of this story and edition as listed on Amazon does bear a superficial resemblance to the story but is basically inaccurate in the details. The story is much better and more imaginative than this description. I do not like spoilers so I will just say that there is more to the story that what first meets the eye. One of Asimov's very good early stories. First published in 1952 I think.

This was a short story by Isaac Asimov involving some aliens seeking a trade deal with a new planet, but things quickly get out of hand after they crash and are found by the children of the locals they were supposed to meet.

Perspective is everything...

I chose this book, because I’ve read some short stories before by Isaac Asimov at school and I really enjoyed them, so I decided to find a novel by him that I haven’t read before. Youth is about two astronauts who come to an alien planet to establish trade with the native extraterrestrials. However, they crash and are taken in as pets by a pair of mischievous youths. My favorite quote from the story is when one of the astronauts says “We would not harm the young of an intelligent species.” He says this after one of the adult aliens asked the astronauts why they let themselves get caught when they had a weapon to protect themselves. It’s my favorite quote, because it shows how rational the astronaut was when he was kept captive for several days. It think Asimov’s writing style was very casual and he did a superb job of writing in the astronauts’, adult aliens’ and adolescent aliens’ points of views. I would recommend this book to all of my friends, because it is an easy read and humorous story.

There’s no one like Asimov. I thought I had read pretty much everything by him, so it was with much anticipation when this came up as a stand alone short story on my Kindle feed. Even though this was published in 1952, it still packs a powerful punch to the senses. As brilliant as he was, he did not learn how to live forever so that he could keep writing quality sci-fi. Fortunately he was prolific in his lifetime and I will treasure his stories and reread them from time to time.

One of the best plot twists I've ever encountered. I shrieked aloud as soon as I'd read it on the last page. What's more is that throughout the book, I was thinking about how this would make a fantastic movie, but now that it's over, I know why it could never become a movie. Wow, just wow!

A very short story that is available for free for Prime members on Amazon. It was enjoyable and a break from my usual historical and literary fiction reads. There's a twist at the end that to me is a usual sci-fi twist, but maybe that wasn't the case back in 1952 when it was written.

At first – and for most of it – it seems like a more-or-less typical youth vs adult views on strange animals and aliens, which in and of itself is interesting. There is a juxtaposition of how the youths Slim and Red see and understand the animals they have found with the conversation between the Astronomer and the Industrialist about the aliens that the Astronomer has been contacted by. If you overlook the negatively stereotypical reactions of Red’s mother (just concerned with the smooth running of the household and screaming at strange sights), the only woman on scene, then it makes for an interesting listen. Especially with the up-ending twist at the end which has you rethinking everything you thought you understood and pictured about the story. Scott Brick’s audio narration was also spot-on to my ears, and made for a great listen while I did some cross-stitching.

Isaac Asimov was an extremely prolific writer of Science Fiction who has the unique honour of having a book in every section of the library. Sixty years before science discovered extra-terrestial planets he writes here about explorers from other worlds.

There is a theory that asserts that any society that reaches the technological ability for inter-stellar space exploration will have used that technology to destroy itself. Indeed here we read about after the war.

This book combines a story about the friendship between two preteens and their parent’s excitement over the possibility of interaction with creatures from outer space.

YOUTH by Isaac Asimov, a free Kindle download, is a short story, not a novel. Nevertheless, it has a brilliant plot, interesting characters, and something of a surprise ending. Two young boys find what they believe to be two small animals, actually survivors of a crashed space craft. They hope to use them to get into the circus, but then they find their fathers are also interested. Quick read in one sitting.

"Youth" by Isaac Asimov is a short story that took me on a captivating journey with an unexpected twist. The narrative follows two youngsters who stumble upon extraterrestrial beings, classifying them as animals. Asimov's masterful storytelling skillfully weaves through the science fiction elements, creating suspense and curiosity about the revelation of secrets. Although I rated the book 4 out of 5 stars, I found it to be a compelling read with an intriguing insight into encountering alien life. Overall, "Youth" lived up to my expectations and left me as a pleased reader with an unexpected revelation.

Some science fiction doesn’t age well. The plot is laid out before you, pompous and knowing. But science was supposed to be new to the audience, and it was, briefly.
