Re Desperation - CL is back with a twisty little story of an h who impulsively agrees to marry her H, then has to back out when she has a life changing accident.
The story opens with the h agreeing to marry the H at his going away party, it seems our Hero is taking himself off to film the Amazon for a year. He and the h have only been dating a few months, but she is convinced she is in the end all be all of love. Sadly it is only lust really, but she won't figure that out until two-thirds into the book. After the H hints about marriage, while complaining that he wanted to meet the h a year earlier but couldn't cause she was still at uni, the h confesses her big love and they kinda sorta tentatively agree to be engaged or are engaged to be engaged or whatever - there was no ring and no announcement and the H makes a big point of telling the h that he will be gone for a year and if she meets someone else, she is to write and he will understand.
The h later overhears the H telling his supreme witch of a sister that he wants a family and a wife waiting for him at home and the h is plain, so she won't be cheating on him and run off with another man like his last beautiful babe did. The h is so in love, she can hardly think after hearing that - tho she does wonder at the wisdom of marrying into a family where the H's relatives obviously and loudly dislike her. Still true love and all that, she doesn't even mind being a brood mare, used for a steady prop to a narcissist.
The h works for a television talk show host (kinda like Graham Norton) and the h is a researcher who also makes arrangements for the guests. Since her boss is at this party too, (they all work for the same tv company,) he wants the h to get the scoop on this interesting guy who claims to be a sculptor. The h asks the sculptor if she can see his work, and the man thinks she is picking up on him - but she really isn't.
The h gets invited to a dinner do with the sculptor, and because the work the sculptor is unveiling at the dinner is a huge public piece with a speech and the h wants to see how the sculptor might work out on tv, the h decides to accept. The H had previously told her that he would be much too busy over the coming days to even say goodbye, so the h figures going to see the sculptor's huge 15 horse water fountain beats sitting home and moping.
On the way back from the dinner, the sculptor's car runs out of gas and it starts to rain. Fortunately the h only lives a block away and she invites the sculptor back to get dried off and call a taxi. The sculptor is cozily ensconced on the h's couch and she has put on a fluffy robe and the H shows up. He makes some snide comments and storms off. The h tries to contact him to explain, but the H is at the airport before the h tracks him down and when she tries to talk to him, he just blows her off. The h is upset and driving back home, she runs into the back of a lorry and in the surgery that follows, she has to have a hysterectomy.
The h eventually recovers, and becomes good friends with the sculptor, even tho he doesn't understand the extent of her injuries. The h decides that since her H only wants her for brood mare capabilities, she will write and tell him she has met someone else, cause she doesn't want to be married out of pity. (Why she even thought she still would be married is beyond me, it was clear the H thought she cheated and he walked away, why even bother to write when the man doesn't want to listen and is only marrying for brood mare capabilities?)
The h is having mopey moments, her family is all dead and she wanted children but now will never have them, but she is getting buy and the sculptor is really becoming a good friend. Then the H returns, he caught a bad bug in the Amazon and became deathly ill and had to come back to England to recuperate.
When the H returns, he sees the h with the sculptor and in a very dog-in-the-manger way, he decides to go after the h. She tries to dissuade him but he manipulates her and blackmails her when her boss wants the H on his tv show. The h doesn't want to lose her job, she has a few career plans of her own, and so she winds up going out with the H, becoming his researcher for a week and going to a weekend house party with the Chairman of the TV studio, who wants the h to convince the H to take a promotion that will keep him in England. The h gradually realizes over the course of these events that she really doesn't know the H at all, and her first big lurve feelings were essentially lust. Of course while she was transcribing his recordings and film for his Amazon series, she got to know the "real" him and now she is REALLY in love.
The h has no success at convincing the H to stay, tho he is looking worse every day, the H is determined to go back to the Amazon if the h won't have him - or at least lurve him up. His witch Queen nasty sister shows up and harasses the h because she claims the H is leaving over her and if he goes he will relapse and die. (So this H is essentially committing suicide over getting his lust thwarted. What an H we have here, he bullies, manipulates and then decides to essentially kill himself cause he can't make a plain little thing succumb to his will.) The h and the sister have a confrontation and the h finally runs her off.
Only to have her sculptor friend call the sister and tell her about the h's hysterectomy, he did it to pay her back because he felt used that he was picking up on the h and she pretended to the H that she was more interested in the sculptor than she was. The sister decides the h can go stop the H at the airport from returning to the Amazon and if she gets kicked to the curb because of her problem, so much the better - the h isn't good enough anyways and maybe it will stop her brother from dying.
The h gets to the airport after the witch Queen drives like a maniac and finds the H and tells him about the accident. The H claims he loves her and is mad that she told him nothing about her accident. The h says she can't marry him and offers to be his mistress. They get a cab back to the h's flat and supposedly the H wants to marry her and he denies ever telling his sister she was plain and a broodmare and the h wants to believe it for the HEA.
Which there isn't really an HEA here, basically the H will swing the lurve club and then dump her, mainly cause she really isn't his type and he just doesn't like people telling him no. The h will be alone probably for a long time, cause she is a very introverted person and the sculptor doesn't want to be her friend anymore cause she won't sleep with him and she isn't perfect after her hysterectomy.
This one was a bit depressing, sure CL has the H say all the appropriate things, but his sincerity comes off more as piqued ego. Just cause CL says it, doesn't make it so - she needed to call Robyn Donald and get a real H declaration to make this HEA a winner.
Still the story moves along and I liked the h, I just felt terrible for her. However I have felt worse for a CL h and she did get what she wanted, so be happy the h is happy and it is another day in HPlandia.
