The Growing Edge is a book of Howard Thurman 's sermons . For Thurman, the sermon is an act of worship in which the preacher exposes his spirit and mind as they seek to reveal the spirit of the Living God upon them. Thurman presents his sermons in six Concerning Enemies , Concerning Prayer , Concerning God , Concerning Peace , Concerning Festivals , and Concerning Christian Character .
Howard Washington Thurman was an author, philosopher, theologian, educator, and civil rights leader. As a prominent religious figure, he played a leading role in many social justice movements and organizations of the twentieth century.
This collection of essays speak to some of the daily activities of one's life and the depth that is there. Thurman is at his best here. The title comes from the final essay, which speaks of life coming up again after apparent demise. But all the essays are worth reading for meditation or just spituall insight
Thurman's sermons always encourage me, even when they're encouraging me to do what I would like to shy away from (like, as this book begins, loving my enemies). While the theological language is aging in places (like King's writings, and because they're both so deeply influenced by the Boston personalism school of theology, being able to connect to and be inspired by that work is still a great pleasure.
