The author of Secrets and Lies (November 2009 release ) perfects her edgy brand of Christian fiction by bringing back the juiciest character from her debut novel. Samaria Jacobs is the deceitful, yet captivating diva who resorts to desperate measures in a fight to win her married lover. Will she get the man, or destroy herself and everyone else in the process? Samaria Jacobs joins New Mercies Christian Church in order to get close to Angelina Preston, her lover’s wife. She’s got her heart set on successful surgeon Gregory Preston. He has just the bankroll she needs to keep her in the lifestyle that her credit card debt has helped her grow accustomed to. If she gets to know Angelina, she can become like her in more than looks, and really work her way into Greg’s heart. Just when Samaria thinks she’s got it all figured out, she finds herself drawn to Angelina’s kindness. Will she be able to carry out her plan after she finds herself yearning for the one thing she’s never had . . . the friendship of a woman? Angelina Preston’s life is filled with a successful career and busy ministry work, but something’s just not right with her marriage. Late nights and early meetings, coupled with lipstick-stained shirts have her suspicious that her husband is doing a little more operating than she’d like. But does she have the strength to confront the only man she’s ever loved and risk losing him to the other woman?
Even as she pursued degrees in Textile Technology, Organizational Leadership and finally, Adult Education, Rhonda McKnight’s love for books and desire to write stories was always in the back of her mind and in the forefront of her heart. I thoroughly enjoyed An Inconvenient Friend. Though perhaps "enjoyed" isn't the right verb. AIF kept me flipping pages as quickly as I could BECAUSE I knew that Samaria Jacobs was headed for a fall. The story of a mistress who decides to get close to her lover's wife just cannot end well.
In addition to the tension of waiting for the moment of exposure and explosion, the dialogue and the characters were layered and realistic, never hitting a false note. I will not forget Samaria, her mother or the wronged wife who becomes Samaria's Inconvenient Friend.
This is a must-read book if you want something that will challenge you to read what the world looks like, feels like from a stranger to God. We often forget this and it's important to remember.
An Inconvenient Friend, a tale of friendship between the wife and the mistress. Before I could barely finish chapter one, I had already drawn a line in the sand, and determined where my allegiance lie. I’d decided that this “shameless hussy” [the piece on the side] needed to get what was coming to her midway through the book. I proceeded with the assumption that this would be a predictable, yet gratifying read, where the “scheming trick” gets what every “piece on the side” deserves. Imagine my surprise when she got exactly what she deserved, and it wasn’t what I’d expected.
Samaria and Angelina are vastly different in personality and spirit. Both abandoned by their first love: their fathers. One could easily conclude that many of their decisions concerning men stemmed from their earliest heartbreak. One can definitely speculate that their choices and behaviors also stemmed from the strong influence of their mothers, who both held distorted perceptions of what it took for a woman to survive. With the anguish of a little girl’s heartbreak lingering near, the backdrop of a bitter mother’s anger, and another mother’s resignation to total submission, it’s easy to see how different each woman turned out to be.
Angelina was taught to cater to her man and encouraged to overlook infidelity in order to enjoy the comforts of a good life. Samaria was taught to manipulate and con her man, use sex as a means to an end, in order to secure material possessions, in hope of a good life. One has been let down by the only man she ever loved, the other betrayed by the love of her life. One closes her heart and spirit and becomes entangled in pain and un-forgiveness. She says that, “There were limits to what we could forgive, even when we loved people.” The other opens her heart and her spirit and finds something she thought she’d never experience.
Heartbreak is probably the most powerful conduit of pain and too often when nourished by instant replays of devastating memories it produces an almost unshakeable un-forgiveness which opens one spirit up to a root of bitterness. Uncontrolled, one can easy become consumed by its ravenous effects. Forgiveness is the most powerful source that we possess and once extended releases its giver, freeing her from the pain and allowing a real opportunity for healing to take place. One chose to forgive the person who broke her heart, the other did not. One chose to forgive herself and accept the forgiveness of God. The other chose to ignore all that she knew about forgiveness and walk out the heartache, which produced excruciating pain.
An Inconvenient Friend was an excellent read with a great storyline which draws its reader into the characters quickly and compels you to continue until you turn the last page. I was anxious to read the excerpt from the sequel, and I will wait with great anticipation to find out the fate of both women. In the meantime, I’m left to ponder my own reaction if ever such a situation would occur. I’m closer to the caterer, then the manipulator. So, if I were the devoted, faithful, loving wife who met with such devastating consequences from my encounter with such an inconvenient friend, how would it end?

I loved this sequel to Ms. McKnight's novel Secrets and Lies. In this novel, the character Samaria has a history of seeking succesful married men. She wants the good life without the work involved. In the first novel, she set her sights on a rich doctor. After failing to seduce him, she tries to slap him with a sexual harrassment suit, which backfires. In this sequel, she is back. This time she does manage to seduce a rich, married doctor and joins a church in order to get closer to his wife. It is her goal to find out as much as she can of her lover's wife so that she can use the info to her advantage and become the wife. The wife, Angelina, not knowing that Samaria is a tool of Satan on assignment to destroy her marriage, becomes a mentor to her in the church. Samaria begins to feel quite attached to Angelina and begins to feel bad for sleeping with Greg, Angelina's husband...
I'll stop there because I don't want to give it all away but this novel depicts the awesome power of God's grace. He can forgive and heal even the most conniving, horrendous people with His love. I enjoyed this novel thoroughly. It was fast-paced and had rich characters. Samaria was written in a way that allowed me to hate her one minute and want to help her the next.
People often ask me why I read so much Christian fiction. They think CF novels are boring. Humph! Anyone who reads this novel will learn with a quickness that CF novels are anything but boring. There is plenty of drama that keeps you hooked even as the message of salvation and healing through Jesus Christ is prevalent.
A great read about Samaria who befriends the woman who's husband she wants to take from her. A lot of drama, but shows the power of forgiveness and redemption. Great read
After reading `Secrets and Lies,' readers already know how low-down and conniving Samaria Jacobs can be when she wants something bad enough. Deciding to play for keeps this time, Samaria has set her sights on Dr. Greg Preston, a highly-respected surgeon that just so happens to be someone else's husband. Maybe a woman with morals would let that deter her, but for Samaria, she's already plotting and planning.
Angelina Preston was no one's trophy wife. A board member with the DFYS, her life is hectic as she is faced with the death of a child, a misplaced child and the media causing a frenzy. It doesn't help that her home life is on shaky ground and her gut is telling her that husband of hers is making appointments elsewhere.
When Angelia is introduced to Rae Burns, a new Christian at the church, the two women bond as Angelina agrees to mentor a sister. Though Rae deceptive plans appear simple enough, she'd never actually planned to like the woman. Soon the women discover, though different, they have a lot in common. As they reveal parts of their painful past, the mentor-mentee relationship easily transforms into sister-friends. Will revelations quell this kinship?
`An Inconvenient Friend' is a clever and positive read. I love the way the characters play off of one another and how the intensity slowly builds. Even better is the way in which readers get to witness a non-believer learning that God loves us regardless of what we've done. My only issues are that the book ended and I feel as if the story is still semi-open.
Samaria Jacobs AKA Rae Burns has her sights set on Dr. Gregory Preston, a very successful surgeon that can afford her. He’s married to Angelina, The Good Wife, a real Christian, with a broken heart.
As the story unfolds Samaria joins the Women’s Bible Study group to get a look at Angelina, her competition. She meets Angelina and an unlikely “friendship” is formed. “Rae’s” agenda is to get a leg up on Mrs. Preston, but the goodness and sincerity from her prey, puts a very interesting twist in the story. Even though Rae’s plan…”Operation Steal Greg” is in effect. She can’t help but to like Angelina.
The Preston’s lost a child and Angelina wants another child so bad she is willing to look over the late nights, perfume and lipstick stained shirts. Believing her marriage can be saved, she tries to hold things together in spite of the obvious distance and evidence.
Rae Burns method to her madness is desperation. Some self inflicted most were growing pains from a difficult childhood and a love that betrayed her. She’s in serious debt and has the burden of a mother whose mission in life is NOTHING.
Angelina has no clue that the other woman is right in her face. The story line when she gives “Rae” a bible lesson on the book of John and the Samaritan woman, had me laughing out loud because “Samaria” thought she was busted, but it was a lesson in God’s grace. Only Samaria saw the parallels. Very Clever Rhonda!
This 5 star read was excellent. I so loved the twists and the story telling ability of Ms. McKnight. She had me from page one.
I loved this book!! Rhonda McKnight is a great author and I look forward to reading more books by her! I found this book at the Black Expressions website. I looked at the cover and thought it looked like a great book. The woman on the front looked to me like a nice church going woman--boy was I ever wrong!
Samaria Jacobs has a married lover named Gregory Preston who is a doctor. She said she understood how the cheating thing worked and there were two categories (P.7) "The first was what I called "something different." .... "The second category, and the one I preferred to be, was the new model". She met Gregory at a sports bar. She didn't think he would be interested but she pushed him because he was upset over a patient. She got him and had him for six months. She wanted to be more than just the woman on the side. (p.25). He did help her with her bills, but of course she wanted more.
Gregory's wife Angelina had a feeling that something was up. He was getting a lot of phone calls at odd times and worked more hours. She would also find lipstick stains on his collar and smell fresh woman's perfume on him. Samaria got to be good friends with Gregory's wife because she joined a church group and got involved in a big project. She even made up a fake name-Rae Burns.
No good can come out of getting so close to your lover's wife. She wanted to find out more about her so she could do everything she could to get Gregory closer to her, but then she started to really like Angelina. Samaria is a cold hearted woman. I can't believe the lengths she went to in order to try to tear Gregory and his wife apart.
An Inconvenient Friend is a great, quick read. There was one section that stands out for me. It's when Ebony was talking to Samaria about the "one lost sheep." I giggled when Ebony said, ". . . if the shepherd is looking for you, he gonna need to take a map and some hunting equipment. Heck, he might need an exploration team or something." That was pretty hilarious. You'll have to read the story to find out why Ebony would make this remark about cousin Samaria. I enjoyed the novel and would recommend it to those who also enjoy reading Christian fiction.
Rhonda did a great job with the story of this paticular Samaritan woman. You heard of Fatal Attraction, right? Well, Ms. McKnight gives us her version of Fatal Distraction. Samaria, Angelina, Greg, MaDukes (Ms. Jacobs--Samaria's mother), were all fatally distracted! I'd love to read a story about Mekhi (my favorite character in the book). Hint, hint, Rhonda (smile)
Do yourself a favor . . . pick up a copy or two--for you and a friend--to discuss. Encourage your bookclub to add this title to their upcoming reading list.

This was a great, quick read. I thought I'd fall out of my chair with laughter when Ebony told her cousin Samaria, as they discussed the subject on the one lost sheep, ". . . if the shepherd is looking for you, he gonna need to take a map and some hunting equipment. Heck, he might need an exploration team or something." Hilarious! You'll have to read the story to find out why Ebony would say this about her cousin.
Instead of "fatal attraction," Ms. McKnight brings us a "fatal distraction." Angelina, Samaria, Greg, Winnie Jacobs were all "fatally distracted." My favorite character, Mekhi, gives the story a certain urban flavor.
Pick up a copy or two of AIF for yourself and a friend to discuss the antics of Samaria and Greg and encourage your bookclub to add this one to their list.
This was a great book and there was never a dull moment. I give this a 2 thumbs up !!! Samaria Jacobs was one bold female to approach her lovers wife. Then to become friends with her just took the cake. Greg was wrong for not talking their problems out with his wife Angelina . I was glad Angelina did get Katrice it took her mind off things. Hopefully Samaria will get a chance to explain herself to Angelina in part 2..... Finished March 24.......
This was an excellent, excellent book. Rhonda really did her thing in her 2nd novel. This is definitely a page turner. I was hooked after reading the 1st paragraph. Samaria Jacobs, is a foul woman. Did I say foul? Oh man, she is just foul!!
This is the first book I was assigned to read after joining a book club. I must say it was a very good book from begining to end. I just started reading christian fiction and have been very impressed with the selections I've read. This book leaves you looking forward to part 2.
Great read!! Absolute page turner. This was my 1st time reading a book by this author but I look forward to reading more. I love Christian fiction. It always has a purpose.
Part one, set the pace of hardship of truth in relationships
Forgiveness, grief, daddy issues and Parental burdens make this book an excellent read. The two women, Angelina and Samaria story was presented well re: their past as related to their burden. What was lacking for Angelina, the Christian was insight into her own actions and pattern of behavior which caused many of the issues of her life. I am hoping book 2, will highlight some growth areas. On the surface she well put together but falling apart because she is determine to do it her way in spite of. The best developed character was Samaria, maybe because she developed the most and had little understanding about Love because of her past. I story didn't talk much about Greg, the husband. I wish it had added his perspective to the story line. In between the chapter I was only able to my assumptions about why he did what he did and the extend of his own pain. I am looking forward to book 2, seeing how the Christian theme of forgiveness, love, commitment and self-worth comes to life.
As always, Rhonda knows how to weave a tale about REAL people and REAL faith. Samaria is a character I'll never forget. I found myself gasping at her audacity but Rhonda is masterful at making me care more about her than any other character in the story. Even the most scandalous of us all is worthy of love and redemption.
I didn’t expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. The characters felt real — flawed, emotional, and struggling with choices that many people face in silence. Samaria’s journey from deceit to self-discovery was powerful, and Angelina’s quiet strength balanced it beautifully. Some parts felt a little drawn out, but overall, a great read with strong moral depth.
Just not my kind of book! It wasn't poorly written, but not great either. There was definitely spiritual growth in one of the main characters and a definite message about forgiveness and repentance. Those lessons could have been taught through another avenue than adultery, stealing and drugs. IMO
This was a throughly entertaining book. It was well written, easy to follow. It was actually quite funny at certain points. It's urban christian at it's best. I found the characters and situations relatable and realistic. It also didn't knock you over the head with a bible and godspeak. In short, Samaria wants to steal Greg away from his wife Angelina. She schemes her way into their church and become Angelina's friend all in an effort to learn about her and the relationship with her husband. Samaria is not under any love spell; she only wants Greg for what he can give her. No no no Samaria is really in love with Mekhi. Mekhi broke Samaria's heart a while back by leaving her hanging. She does end up underminding the already troubled marriage but it backfires on her when she is not only caught telling a lie about who she is but gets caught stealing drugs from the hospital where she works. There are a few questions for readers groups at the back of the book worth exploring. 1. Why did Samaria prefer married men? I think with her mother raising her to just use them and lose them that was what she had been conditioned to do. This became especially true after her dissappointment with Mekhi. 2. Can Samaria blame her mother for her bad decisions? Can we blame our parents. Parents have the single most important influence on their children but at some point we have to take responsiblilty for our own actions. When you know better, do better. 3. Was Samaria the real cause of the break-up of Angelina and Greg's marriage? To me not really. If you are looking for the big obvious answer then she was still just a symptom of a much bigger problem the marriage had. 4. Can the marriage be saved? Sure people do it all the time. I have learned whatever you committ to will work, even if it is foolish. 5. Was it Samaria's responsiblity to save her mother from drugs? I know it was not her responsiblilty to save her mother but saying is one thing and acutally not trying to help her is another. Doing the right thing is not ever easy. Sure she could have call the cops. Forced her into rehab. Tried to get other relatives involved but in this situation and so many in the world like this it is an uphill batter. 6. Could the Mentor-a-Sister program been structred better to protect Angelina from what happened? It is possible to have a more long handled spoon approach but in church today I do feel that this is the problem. People don't really want to get involved. We really don't want to help and the world sees it. We cannot impact the world because they know we don't love them and they don't love us. 7. If one thing could be changed what would it be? I really didnt want for Greg to think that Samaria was a stalker. It fits the plot and I didnt see it comming but I just didnt want that.
Samaria Jacobs aka Rae Burns is on a mission and she lets it be known from that start that its "Operation Steal Greg". Greg being Dr. Greg Preston who is in a troubled marriage with "superwoman" sassy, classy Angelia Preston. A woman who is busy in the ministry and the community but missing the bonds of motherhood after losing a child to SIDS. This issue causes a strong rift between the couple and Samaria/Rae is all too winning to help heal the wounds by secretly trying to destroy the marriage. Samaria has no qualms taking her battle to the church by befriending Angelia in order to get the inside scoop on how to win her husband, of course unbeknownst to Angelia. On the flip side Samaria's ghetto bred mother and cousin and ex lover from her past have their own agendas as well further complicating her plan to be the next wife to Dr. Preston.
Their battles and weaknesses can be related to from the pain of Samaria being a "drug dealer" to her family to Angelia indirect pain towards her husband in not being able to conceive Things start spiraling as the truths are revealed in the end take a twist for all involved.
Personally I was pulled into this story when I read that a mistress was befriending the wife of her lover. I was curious to see how this was going to pull off and how the end was going to be. Truly I can testify I just started reading various Christian fiction authors and Rhonda McKnight truly kept me glued to the pages. I couldn't rest til I found out what happened with so and so, and how this scene was going to play out. It was like reading a real life story with issues such as infidelity, child welfare laws, drug addiction, family loyalties and forgiveness.
I loved reading any Christian book that's not preachy but shows the love of God through the changing of the character's lives in a realistic ways.. It's a book that I truly recommend to readers, but I must warn you to have a full day to read because you will definitely be pulled in to read it til the end.
But I must warn you, the end sometimes is the beginning of something new.
I truly enjoyed reading this book. It prompted me to do a great deal of thinking. I truly admired Angelia and her friend, Felesia. I, too, loved the manner in which Angelina ensued that she kept her identity. This is a must read. Those reading it will be intrigued by an awesome piece of work that is not preachy. If I recall nothing from the book, I remember a # of things that were said: 1. Everyone has pain and drama in their lives and we have to talk to others so we do not feel alone when we are going through the trials; 2. Always trust that inner voice; 3. Forgiving doesn't mean you can't move on; 4. It should come as no surprise when those who are saved try to hold you captive with churchy platitudes (when Angelina decided that enough was enough...hubby stated "I thought you was saved..). The nerve..lastly, when looking at the female characters...it was apparent that so much pain from their childhood was unresolved.
Angelina is a devout christian. She believes in thy shall not judge. She and her husband Greg have hit a bump in their marriage. Samaria wants a wealthy husband...Angelina's husband. She will try anything to get him...even becoming Angelina's friend. A foe in friend clothing. Devious mind at work. This is a crazy storyline and as reality tv has sadly proven-it's reality and you better believe there is a God, because No one was committed as people tend to do devious minds target you. Recommend Read. I cannot wait to read the next installment.
An Inconvenient Friend is the story of Samaria Jacobs who poses as Rae Burns to get close to her lovers' wife, Angeline Preston. She calls her mission Operation Steal Greg. In the process of trying to steal her man, Samaria did not think that she would grow to like Angelina and value their friendship. This novel is full of schemes and lies, which make it an entertaining read. There were a couple of background issues ( for example, Angelina worked for DYFS, yet in GA it's called DFCS), but they didn't take away from the story. It's worth your time to read this novel!
Samaria jacobs, is a hot mess but she meeting a surgeon name gregory preston and falls for him but its his money she cares about and what he can do for her. Gregory is giving her checks paying her bills . But what he don't is she has been going over to the chruch where his wife go's and changes her name , shes out to do what every she can to hurt hos wife and her self. This was a good read waiting for the other book to tell me what happens.
I must have to read the first book since I see in past reviews this is a sequel. However, I tried to start the other book Secrets and Lies, but this one has caught my attention early on. Yet, stories that start out with adulterous affairs and the mistress trying to storm and alarm the wife about cheating...then only want to see her reactions...and this troubled me so in the first few chapters. I know most people like to read dirt and to be entertained, yet I will see how this story transpires.
Samaria Jacobs is a nurse with a shady past. She's involved with a married man, Dr Gregory Preston. She's wanting to be more than the mistress and plans to do so by any means necessary. She takes mistress to a whole other level. She befriends the wife, Angelina Preston. Will she able to follow thru with her plan?
I enjoyed this book. Learning about the characters and their pasts made their plots understandable. This is a must read.
