Everything in this book happened to real people. And YOU CHOOSE what side you’re on and what you do next. The choices you make could lead you to survival or to death. In the You Choose Books set, only YOU can CHOOSE which path you take through history. What will it be? Get ready for an adventure…
This is an awesome way to step into history and not just read a text book. There are three paths to take and each path is full of historical information and some suspense. I enjoyed being able to choose what I wanted to do and not just read about one person's viewpoint. It was great to go back and take a different path so that I could see all three paths and all 12 endings.
I learned so much from this book. For example, I didn't realize there were replacement freedom riders. This was because the first line of riders were beaten so badly they could not continue.
I think a teacher could use these types of books to enhance any history lesson. It would definitely pull in some reluctant readers. You could set up groups to take certain paths and make certain decisions and then they could report back what happened. The class, as a whole, could map out all the different choices on a poster.
(Warning since this book is for younger readers, I curse in this review... a lot)
This... Was some shit man. When I was younger (elementary school days) I was so into learning about Harriet Tubman and MLK. The social justice warrior was always alive and kicking inside me.
This was totally different than any of the civil rights books I read back in the day because it was interactive, either way society was fucked up in that day but it was crazy to feel like you were living in that terrible time and what would happen in your life based on whether or not you choose to fight the system.
Plus I loved the idea of interactive books but never read one before it was like some Butterfly Effect shit.
But the thing is that this book and tons of media like this is important as hell but it also makes me an unhealthy level of sad and pissed off. Whether it's people fighting racism, homophobia, sexism or any other form of oppression seeing stuff like this just makes me hate the other side, the ignorant dumbasses with a superiority complex that thought it was okay to treat human beings like this.
Overall: If I had children, I'd definitely have them read this. It's fun but still teaches a lot of real facts about history.
The book is really good. It teaches your a lot about the civil rights movement. I would recommend this book to someone that is trying to learn more about the civil rights movement.
The civil rights movement was a time in US history when black people began to have the same rights as white people. Before then, black people had less rights, and they had seperate bathrooms, schools, tables, even drinking fountians were strictly seperated. If a black person did not follow these restrictions, they were often jailed. This book describes how the civil rights movement takes place, and how it changes history forever. It also shows how poorly treated black people were, and how white people reacted if black people went to an all white school. This book is a choose your own adventure and so it can have many different endings (some of which ended up as me being arrested, nearly killed in a church bomb, fired from my job and taking a brick through the window.) If you want to learn more about US history, this is the book for you.
I didn't rate this book very high because most of the endings have bad stuff happening to me, and I was also able to finish this book in one night. I dont really like non fiction, for it is kind of boring to me, and this book was so short compared to harry potter or something, I could've used this book as a book mark! This topic was somewhat interesting though, and I did enjoy hitting someone on the head with a brick.
I Loved how the book was very interactive and it really made you feel like u were in the book. I hated how whites treated the blacks it just wasn't fair and the violence that went on was despicable. If I lived in that time I would treat everyone as equal as I treat my family. Overall this book was a 8 out of 10 for me because it got confusing if u missed a part where u were supposed to go to the ending and you got confused but overall very good book.
This book is cool, there are different paths to choose to see what would happen if you did this or that. learned about all the things african americans go through and didnt sound the best. Its short but tells you lots.
In this book, you are a person at this time. You go to jail, you are fired from your job, your dark skinned, and more. You learn a lot about the Civil Rights Movements. This story is fantastic because Adamson makes the book like this s your life. This is a good book.
This book is a great book for getting information about the civil rights movement, I used this book for a school project and it was a big help in getting info for civil rights. If you are looking for a quick read and a lot of info this is the book for you. The shear amount of info on the war on racism is over whelming.
