The Wild Wynchesters #4

My Rogue to Ruin

Rate this book
The riotous Wynchester family has taken on a new case to expose a forger, but the prime suspect isn't at all what he seems in this captivating Regency romp from a New York Times bestselling author.

Lord Adrian Webb is a no-good, roguish, rakish scoundrel of the first order, which is why his father sends him to the Continent and cuts him off without a farthing. When (penniless) in Rome, what's a disgraced gentleman to do, but dabble in some light forgery? After all, better to leave the original works of art where they belong instead of some English snob's drawing room. But soon his scheme snowballs out of control, and a blackmailer is out to ruin him.

The Wynchester family is known for their daring capers to help those in need. Until now, Marjorie has always let her siblings take the lead when it comes to planning undercover work. But someone in London is trying to pass off counterfeits and this time she's the only one with the skill needed to find the culprit. Her investigations lead her straight to Lord Adrian Webb. But every time Marjorie thinks she's figured Adrian out, she learns something new that turns all her assumptions on their head. He's a sinner. A saint. A heartless scoundrel. A loyal brother. A liar. A good kisser. Er…wait… She can't afford to lose herself in the passionate embrace of a man she'll have to turn over to the magistrate as soon as the case is closed.

One Liner: Entertaining

Lord Adrian Webb is a rakish scoundrel banished from the country by his father around ten years ago. He is back in London to meet his little sister, Iris, the only family member whose opinion matters to him. However, his little forgery, a source of his income, lands Adrian in hot water.

The Wynchester family has its own rules. They will do almost anything to help those who need it. They are knights in shining armor, with varied skills to their names. Marjorie is the youngest sister, an artist, and a wallflower protected by the family.

However, when they get a case of counterfeit pennies, Marjorie steps up to solve it. This leads her straight to Adrian and his heart. But the duo has a few hurdles to clear before they can talk about their personal lives. The villain, after all, will stop at nothing.

The story comes in the third-person POV of Adrian and Marjorie.

My Thoughts:

Though the book is the fourth in the series, it reads well as a standalone. The couples from the previous books have their HEA and have minor to moderate roles in this one.

The book is what I’d call a contemporary-themed historical romance. Even though the setting is 1818, the characters, storyline, and diversity come from today’s world. You’ll have to go with the flow to enjoy this one.

I like that the heroine is partially deaf (due to smallpox) and an expert at forgery. Well, she’s also an artist and comes from a found family with versatile talents. Some of them do read like caricatures, but the warmth between the siblings and the family makes up for the lack of character depth.

The main leads are decent enough and easy to root for, so that’s a definite plus. They aren’t complex or multilayered, but I wasn’t expecting that, anyway. As expected, Adrian is a good man, though he prefers to use his reputation to keep people away. I like how he years for family love and support.

There’s enough humor, drama, and action to keep the reader interested. Snowley is very much a ruthless villain who looks like a dear old grandpa. Even though the stakes are high, the book doesn’t feel intense. It is meant to be a lighthearted romance (Steam 1.5 max).

The climax happens in stages. We see a series of events with multiple issues cropping up one after another. However, they are neatly tackled and sorted to bring HEA.

I love the sort of dual epilogue in this one. The second last chapter could have been an epilogue, but it isn’t. We have a final proper epilogue that hints at the next book. Though I haven’t read the previous books (I’m familiar with the titles but didn’t realize they belonged to the same series), I intend to check out the next one. Well, why wouldn’t I when the FMC is the murder-loving Elizabeth?

There’s quite a bit of filler content (not sure how much will be edited in the final version). Still, it doesn’t weigh down the pacing much. I could sustain a good momentum when reading and finished the book in 2 days.

And I have to mention Tickletums, the homing hedgehog being trained by Jacob. I mean… how cute is that? We also have a messenger crow, a sheep (Ophelia), and a bunch of other animals. But Tickletums gets my vote.

To summarize, My Rogue to Ruin is a lighthearted Regency romance with modern fittings. It’s an entertainer and should be treated as such, even if it manages to deal with a couple of serious topics. Don’t look for logic in this one!

Thank you, NetGalley and Forever (Grand Central Publishing), for the eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

The fourth entry in the Wild Wynchesters series has one of our favorite setups EVER: Adrian was cut off by his family about ten years ago for conduct unbecoming of a gentleman. Since then, he's been roaming the Continent, collecting antiquities, and selling them through a criminal-adjacent middleman to the aristocracy. Except he HASN'T been taking antiquities, he's been forging them and leaving the originals where they belong. And that criminal-adjacent middleman? Well, he's just realized he's been conned.

So, he takes Adrian prisoner and forces him to forge counterfeit coins, which are passed along to unwitting pawnshop customers. Which is where Marjorie comes in: one of the customers comes to the Wynchesters for their form of justice. Marjorie and her family make a plan for her to infiltrate the pawnshop and take down the forgers - including Adrian. But when she's basically trapped in there with him for upwards of 12 hours a day, she finds it quite difficult to resist his charms.

We absolutely LOVED this idea. Something kept it from being a new favorite of ours, and we think we know what it is: during all of these days that Adrian and Marjorie spend together, they spend them mostly talking. And repeating their conversations. And talking again. Look, we don't hate a slow burn, but there was a lot of potential wasted in the middle of the book. (We're not saying you HAVE to show the evolution of a relationship with corresponding physical intimacy, just that we think the book could really have benefited in this area...)

34-Word Summaries:

Laine: The artist/forger of the Wynchesters finally gets to shine as they bust a counterfeiter targeting desperate people pawning heirlooms. Marjorie is primed to hate the artist, until she learns he's an unwilling accomplice.

Meg: You’re finally heading a heist of your own, and everything is going great, when suddenly the master forger you’re stuck with turns out to be not only NOT a villain, but also … hot?

This objective review is based on a complimentary copy of the book.

If Tickletums the homing hedgehog has zero fans I am dead

“Tickletums is a working hedgehog and much too busy for entanglements of any kind.” 🦔

This is…perhaps my new favorite installment of the hijinks-filled Wild Wynchesters (although I say that with each new book, so I don’t think I could ACTUALLY pick a favorite 😭)!!

I am obsessed with this series. Like. Nobody is doing chaotic vigilante family-filled historical romance like Erica Ridley. If I could make any histrom series into a (perfect) screen adaptation, it would be this one. Actually if I could jump into any histrom family, it would probably be this one—although I don’t know what special skills I’d bring to the heist-loving family…hm. Might have to settle for making terrible bonnets with Faircliffe 🫢

“It was a glorious morning for a robbery.”

That is the FIRST LINE in this book. And if that didn’t convince you, here are some more reasons to pick it up:

🪙 artists fighting villains & falling in love
🪙 lowkey rumplestiltskin vibes?? They’re locked in a room turning metal into coins idk it makes sense in my head
🪙 disabled (partially deaf) heroine
🪙 Wynchester shenanigans
🪙 rakish scoundrel…or is he?
🪙 forced proximity TENSIONNN

Oh, and DID I MENTION THE HEDGEHOG??? Tickletums, the homing hedgehog in training, who can’t be trusted to travel long distances bc he gets sleepy and takes frequent naps (relatable)??? I’m sorry Marjorie, move over bc he is my favorite character 🦔

I will leave you with one last line before you rush off to get your hands on Marjorie and Adrian’s story:

“Because your you is the exact you that someone else has spent their life searching for.”

CW: Sexual content, confinement, ableism, sexual harassment, violence, toxic relationship

A rompy good time and among my favorites in the Wild Wynchesters series! My Rogue to Ruin follows introverted and partially deaf Marjorie as she takes lead on a case for the first time, proves that she is valuable, and finds love in the most unexpected of ways.

Lord Adrian is a rogue, a rake, and a scoundrel who has been estranged from his family and made a living abroad making and selling forgeries of priceless artifacts. He's finally ready to leave that life and reconnect with his sister when his subterfuge comes to light and he is forced to make counterfeit coins for a notorious criminal.

Meanwhile the Wynchesters have a new client- a woman who was scammed out of her only valuables with forged coins. And Marjorie is determined to take down the man behind it, little realizing the chemistry they would have together...

This was such a blast to read and Marjorie has a great growth arc through the book, really coming into her own and finding confidence in what she brings to the table. The romance was sexy and fun, with plenty of danger along the way. If you've enjoyed the series, this one is a must read. I received a copy of this book for review from the publisher, all opinions are my own.

My Rogue to Ruin is the newest release in the Wild Wynchesters series and I have absolutely adored this historical romance series.

If you love historical romances with found family vibes, this is the series for you! The Wynchesters are a group of 6 siblings who were orphaned and taken in and raised by a wealthy, loving Baron. Together they take on missions to fight and seek justice for those who have no where else to turns with their special skills (mapmaking, disguises, forgery, breaking in, etc). All their adventures, sleuthing, mystery-solving, and helping those in unfortunate circumstances is the best!

In this book we follow Marjorie Wynchester and art forgery! Marjorie has always just taken a backseat to her family planning all of their undercover work, but this time she’s the only one with the skillset needed to find the culprit of counterfeits. Marjorie is partially deaf after a smallpox incident as a child, but she’s also an artist who remembers every detail of things once she’s seen it. Lord Adrian has been disowned by his father after he got tired of his roguish, rakish ways. So when he was left penniless, Adrian took to light forgery… Now a blackmailer is out to ruin him and he becomes entangled with the Wynchester siblings!

This one was a lot to fun! I loved how Adrian and Marjorie end up having to have a lot of forced time together. They start talking and Marjorie realizes there is more to Adrian than she first thought. I did think the middle bit felt a bit long, but otherwise this was just a delight! I love the time with the Wynchester siblings and Tinkletums, the homing hedgehog, was another fav!

Thank you so much to the publisher, Forever, for an ARC. All thoughts in this review are my own!

Chat, I don’t know if I can adequately express how insane this book was in way that still managed to be kinda boring?? This is what I get for picking audiobooks for the sole reason of being read by the Locked Tomb narrator. Moira Quirk, you have done nothing wrong in your life but blink twice if you need to escape regency romance.

These two protagonists were Olympic-level yappers who still somehow couldn’t communicate their problems, the villain was cartoonishly evil, there was a trained hedgehog involved in a heist, and then juxtaposed with all of that tomfoolery we get an extremely jarring chapter of actual smut???? On top of that, due to the fact that it’s the Gideon the Ninth narrator, you’ll occasionally have to experience the worst dialogue you’ve ever heard but in the recycled voice of Palamades Sextus. Idk man, sunk cost fallacy but I had to stick with it for those reading challenge stats.

This was such a fun historical romance! It was my first by Erica Ridley, and I'll certainly be looking for her other books now! I didn't realize when I requested this that it was the fourth book in a series, but it was easy to follow despite this, so I would definitely recommend it if you want to jump into the series with this one!

I loved Marjorie and Adrian's banter, and I found that they were both very interesting characters separately, which made the romantic plot and the book overall much more interesting. The romance was relatively lighthearted, and this book was a fun, relatively quick read! I'd definitely recommend this to those who enjoy historical romances! :)

Regency caper with a…No! make that many differences!

My second introduction to the Wynchester siblings and it continues to be a wild ride. An unusual family of mixed persons from varying backgrounds, a family made not born, who seek to right the wrongs done to ordinary folk. There’s a host of animals involved like a gorgeous homing hedgehog. I know—wonderful comic relief!
It seems there’s a counterfeiter loose in the community. Folks are being relieved of their hard won cash.
Marjorie Wynchester is the artist who sees things in terms of color explosions! Lovely! She’s hard of hearing and wants to prove to her family that she can take the lead in this case searching for the swindler.
Enter the gorgeous and artistic Lord Adrian. Banished seven years ago to the continent by his father the Marquess of Meadowbrook for daring to turn his energies towards a career in art. He’s the youngest son of Meadowbrook, an intolerant stickler.
Adrian has been blackmailed into counterfeiting coins by the rogue Snowley, known as the Grandfather of St. Giles. He has Bow Street runners in his pocket. Coins that the residents of the area can ill afford to lose. You see, Adrian had been counterfeiting artefacts for those on their Grand Tour but, with the war over chances are his copies would be discovered as just that. He thought a simple explanation to Snowley and he’d be able to bow out. What an innocent! Snowley was not about to cut Adrian loose. He’s about to use Adrian to increase his own profits.
Marjorie, after her own investigations, has decided to put the counterfeiting people out of business. Once she discovers Adrian’s role and the bind he’s in, she wants to fix his situation as well.
Complex, zany and completely enjoyable!

A Forever ARC via NetGalley.
Many thanks to the author and publisher.

I am now a fan of this family! I want to be a Wynchester as well going around London solving crimes and do also a little mischief. This is my first book about this family and I will definitely go back and the read the other ones!

Adrian and Marjorie were so cute together and the banter at the beginning was so fun! He was being very cheeky with her and she wasn’t letting him gain an inch.

I loved the adventure/mischief nature of the plot and the found family aspect as well!

This book was just the pure happiness that I needed in my life right now! I love the Wynchesters, and Marjorie is so sweet and likable.
After book three was a bit of a miss for me, I feel like Erica Ridley has really hit her stride with this one. The banter and chemistry between Adrian and Marjorie is amazing!
Really, everything about this book was delightful. I can't wait for the next installment of The Wild Wynchesters.

Not going to lie, the sex scenes in the second half didn’t endear this book to me, but mostly it was a fun time.

Definitely preferred the first half to the second but still had an excellent time. Pretty in love with this family. I REALLY wish Jacob’s story was next, but, alas, I’ll survive.

Adventurous, spicy, and fun!

My Rogue to Ruin is a mysterious, engaging tale that sweeps you away to London during 1818 and into the life of Marjorie Wynchester, a kind, unique young woman who embarks on a mission to use her artistic talents to do whatever it takes to take down a local swindling pawnbroker with a side business in counterfeiting coins, even if it means having to work alongside the handsome, disgraced Lord Adrian Webb who has a past littered with scandal and a pile of troubles of his own.

The writing is witty and light. The characters are resourceful, clever, and endearing. And the plot is a humorous, compelling tale full of family, friendship, tricky situations, scheming behaviours, awkward moments, secrets, attraction, desire, and romance.

My Rogue to Ruin is an amusing, lighthearted, entertaining tale by Ridley that I thoroughly enjoyed and which is the fourth novel in a series, The Wild Wynchesters, that I absolutely adore.

Thank you to Forever and Grand Central Publishing for gifting me a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Another cute entry to the Wynchester series! There's a ton of adventure on this one, with most of it focusing on the caper they're engaging in. The romance between Adrian and Marjorie is very sweet, with solid build up. I've been waiting for Marjorie's book since she's so autistic coded and I love that. Marjorie also has an eidetic memory, synesthesia, and is deaf, which makes her interesting to read about, and it seems like solid rep of all these things (although I would like to complain about the scene in which they are signing in the pitch dark against each other's bodies by feel, which seems pretty far-fetched without there being any training for them to learn to do this specifically). I had a much-needed fun time with this one, as it is filled with whimsy, adventure, love, and a little bit of steam. I look forward to the next book (which is about possibly my MOST anticipated character, Elizabeth).

Reviewed for Wit and Sin

The Wild Wynchesters have returned in My Rogue to Ruin and this time it’s artist Marjorie at the heart of their latest mission. Her target? Lord Adrian Webb, a scoundrel and rogue like no other. A man banished from England seven years ago, only to return and begin counterfeiting coins, preying on the Wynchesters’ vulnerable clients. Except, when Marjorie goes undercover she learns Adrian isn’t all that he seems. In fact, he’s not exactly a willing participant in this treasonous plot. Can she free him and save the day? More importantly, can she do so without losing her heart to the rogue?

My Rogue to Ruin is fast-paced and fun. Marjorie is one of the less outrageous Wynchester siblings, usually more at home in her art studio than out and about like her siblings. But lately she’s been feeling at loose ends. Her siblings are moving on, falling in love…their family is changing and Marjorie – for all that she loves her siblings’ partners – isn’t fond of change. Especially since she doesn’t know her place in this shifting world. Then a case comes along that she can finally take the lead on. Her art expertise has her going undercover to bring down a forger. And that forger is an artist who threatens to throw Marjorie off her game.

Adrian is a charming rogue, but he’s not a bad person. In fact, he’s quite a good person who has made a number of mistakes. He’s a loving brother who has been separated from his family for quite some time and he’s lonely. Marjorie brings hope and love back into his life. The two of them have sparkling chemistry that makes this book delightful. I liked that they were both clever, resourceful, and talented. They complemented one another quite well. And of course, close quarters make their slide into love quick and easy. It’s surviving the story’s villain that will be hard. Luckily for Adrian and Marjorie they have the whole Wynchester family to help them. The Wynchesters can be a bit over-the-top sometimes but in this book they didn’t overtake the main couple, which I really appreciated.

Erica Ridley’s Wild Wynchesters romances always have action, love, and family. My Rogue to Ruin is no exception and it’s entertaining from beginning to end. I finished Marjorie and Adrian’s story a well-satisfied reader and I’m very much looking forward to the final two Wynchester siblings getting their happily ever afters.

I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

"We don't need luck." She tapped the side of her head. "We have my memory and your talent."

My Rogue to Ruin is the fourth book in The Wild Wynchesters series. I've enjoyed each and every book so far and I seriously can't wait for the next one. Each sibling and their potential love interests or friends have made these books fly by. I was honestly very excited to jump in and see who Marjorie was going to find and fall in love with. Adrian did not disappoint one freaking bit.

The bantering, teasing, flirting, and romance that brewed between them was adorable and entertaining from start to finish. I couldn't wait for them to cross that line and turn up the heat. Which, again, did not disappoint one bit. Of course, we had to deal with some drama here and there, but it had to happen. It needed to happen.

In the end, the heists were so much fun, and I can't wait for Elizabeth to storm the castle. I'm probably the most excited to jump into her book because she has been my favorite from the very beginning.

Another GREAT Regency romance featuring the beloved Wynchester siblings. I really enjoyed this latest installment in the series that sees Marjorie helping to uncover a forgery ring only to fall for the man who is being forced to commit crimes in order to work off a debt and protect his family.

Adrian and Marjorie were so great together!! I loved that they were both artists and both tried to protect the other. Full of found family, clever pets (a hedgehog and a crow), cameos from all the other Wynchesters plus great disability rep too (Marjorie is hard of hearing).

This was also on audio narrated by Moira Quirk. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a digital and finished copy in exchange for my honest review! I do not want this series to ever end!! Thankfully there was a very satisfying epilogue that is sure not to disappoint!

Thank you to NetGalley and Forever for this ARC.

Though not my favorite book this was a cute read. The plot about forgery and dukes and big happy families was light hearted. There was romance that I found happened quickly? Adrian and Marjory ended up working well together. I feel the story could have been solved and completed in about half the amount that it was. The animals in the story were cute and Snowley was a character that you really hated, greedy little curmudgeonly dirt bag. The book is a bad story turned good story but the side characters gave it just a little something extra that added some filler to the story line.

This series is so fun. I love the Wynchesters and I love Erica Ridley’s writing. I feel like her writing is extra good in this one too.

I do think this series does weigh heavier on the mysteries than the relationships and I would like a bit more focus on that, but the mysteries are so fun and this one was an engaging one. Adrian and Marjorie have a first meeting very early on, but then don’t actually meet until about 20%. Which to me, is a bit too late or at a minimum, later than I would like.

I liked Adrian and his struggle to deal with his past, but to be honest would’ve liked him to be a bit more developed? He didn’t stand out to me that much, but I did like his banter with Marjorie and I did like some of his internal dialogue (swoon). His past was interesting and I liked how his sister was interwoven into the plot.

And Marjorie was a firecracker. I loved seeing her come out of her shell and bit and become a main character. She is also partially deaf which I cannot speak on if it was a good representation it was nice to see some disability representation in a historical and it was interwoven into the plot.

Honestly my only complaint was I wanted a bit more from the relationship itself. Other than that, I liked everything about this and think it is a solid addition to the series. Also there is a hedgehog which was a cutie!!

I’ve only read a couple of Erica Ridley books, one in this, The Wild Wynchesters series. The Wynchesters are a delightful family who operate within society (barely) but run cons and have wild escapades usually for a worthy cause. They are very accepting and embracing of their family members and the partners they love. In this book Marjorie Wynchester is trying to figure out who is passing counterfeits and her suspicion lands on Lord Adrian Webb.

Lord Webb is a second son and estranged from his family. He fled to Paris when his father cast him out seven years earlier. He is an artist, and has been making copies of vases and priceless works selling them to wealthy patrons through Mr. Snowley of the British Museum. But now his contact wants him to make forgeries of coins and has no problem holding him prisoner to do it. The fun picks up when Marjorie ends up being held with him. There is attraction, banter and of course with her family involved, eventually mayhem.

If you want traditional historical romance this isn’t for you. If you don’t mind bending the rules these stories are delightfully fun. I especially like the other siblings and spouses are part of the story. Because I’ve read their book, I loved reconnecting with Tommy and Philippa (The Perks of Loving a Wallflower Oct 2021). I am looking forward to Elizabeth’s story next.

Thank you to NetGalley and Forever (Grand Central Publishing) for the ARC and I am leaving an honest review.

This was a really interesting read, I really enjoyed both Marjorie and Adrian's characters. I did this a disservice by reading half then returning a week later to finish, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. I really love the rep in this series and the play on tropes, Adrian's the not actual scoundrel and Marjorie's disability was always there and played a role but never defined her. These two bonding over art and forgery was so fun, as was the forced proximity, a favourite trope of mine. I definitely have to suspend my disbelief with the Wynchester schemes but it was nice to see some real stakes and consequences in this, even if they did resolve super easily.

I usually don't gravitate towards historical romances but this one caught my attention when I first read the synopsis. I was a little hesitant going into this book but once I found out it had aspects of a mystery that needed to be solved, I was hooked. I loved the banter between the FMC and MMC.

I loved this book! The Winchesters are back with their hijinx and I’m here for it. They are all ridiculous and lovely, and I want more of them.

While I enjoyed book 3, it lost some of the ridiculousness (homing hedgehogs didn’t make an appearance) and the couple was apart for a lot of the book, but that was fixed in this one. The couple was together for pretty much the whole book and their banter was too notch.

I do think there was a bit of a pacing issue in the middle, some of the plot dragged a bit longer than needed, but it didn’t take away from my enjoyment.

I listened to the audiobook and the narrator did a great job.

I received an arc of the ebook, but I ended up borrowing the audiobook from my library.

Officially DNFing this one for now.
I keep trying to get back to it but for some reason it's just not working for me.
I'm 36% in and I still feel no attachment to the characters, which makes it hard to enjoy anything. I wasn't a fan of their first encounter as well so I can't say it started well for me. The story isn't picking up and I'm just not into it sadly.

I haven't read the first books in this series though so I might try to go back and read in order and get back to this one after. I'm not saying I'll never finish it but for now I can't imagine this reading going well for me so I'm putting it down.

Thanks to the publisher for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

3.5 stars! I love the Wynchesters- what a family:) so glad Marjorie got her shot to shine.

This one didn’t grip me (like the first two), but I still thoroughly enjoyed it.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced copy to review.
