A forthright discussion of the changes that take place during adolescence, and their related sexual issues, includes sections on sexually transmitted diseases, contraception, and homosexuality. Reprint.
Dr. Ruth gives the facts in a way that's easy to understand, and only a little embarrassing. I don't think she missed any important topics. This is a good jumping off point that can lead to questions, answers and discussion between kids and their trusted adult.
This book was published in 1993 and I think I first read it (or something like it) in 6th or 7th grade. At the time, I devoured the information like a curious preteen would. I’m re-reading it now as the parent of a 10 year old. The information holds up as nothing in this subject matter changes, but there are a few out of date references (for example, asking your parents for your own phone line and investing in a new technology called “call waiting”). Still it is informative, covers all the subjects, and is very detailed. There are a few parts that made me raise my eyebrows, but just because I thought it was a little surprising, doesn’t make it not true.
