Lexi Weller's vacation in England doesn't exactly start off all that great when she almost ends up getting into a car accident. But when the driver of the car she almost hits steps out to speak with her, she finds herself practically drooling over him. And before it's all over, Mr. Tall, Muscular and Good-looking asks Lexi out on a date.
Raedwald hopes he hasn't made a mistake by asking the sexy American out to dinner. Charged by the Anglo-Saxon god, Tiw, to protect mortals from the werewolves sired by Fenris the wolf, Raed knows he can't put Lexi before his duty. But when Lexi comes to mean more to him than he ever imagined, Raed must find a way to explain what he is without scaring off the woman he never wants to let go.

Taking a month for vacation in Englad, Lexi Weller is thrilled with the chance to discover her families history. When she is almost in an accident, she is prepared for the worst, instead she finds herself looking at the most stunning man she has ever seen who ends up asking her on a date instead.

Raedwald should be focusing on protecting humans from werewolves, but the second he meets Lexi he has an unresistable urge to be with her, the more time he spends, the more he wants her to stay by his side forever. He just has to figure out how to tell her what he truly is and not have her run off screaming.

Pretty good, this is very similiar to Roxie's protectors. Will try the next one, the other warriors who are lead by Readwald were intriguing enough to give it a try.

I received a copy of this book in place of an honest review.

Lexi Weller wanted to visit the place that her great-grandfather was from. She knew that the story that he told on his death bed couldn't be true. How in the world could his father turn into a werewolf and kill his mom and he is saved just in time? That's what Lexi thinks anyway.

Lexi runs into a car almost. She ended up on the wrong side of the road and almost hit a mercedes. When this big tall guy steps out she knows that she is in trouble. Raedwald has been alive for over thousands of years. He and his men turn into werewolves at night to take care of humans from getting bit.

When these two run into each other they know that their lives are going to change. Neither have ever had the feelings and emotions that they have for each other. The only thing is that Raed decided a long time ago to never share his secret to a mortal. Looks like he will be breaking it.

I have read many books by this author and I love every single one. They are just so interesting and I know I will be learning something new. I love how the characters meet each other and the things they have to go through to be together. I know that it is never easy but the author knows exactly what to do to make the story more believable and I can't wait to read the rest of this series.

This story has all the elements you would expect from a shifter story. It was great to read something that wasn't set in America and had some local history entwined in the story.

That said I did feel that the story was not passionate enough. It felt very matter of fact in places and the sex scenes could have been more detailed to make them hotter than they were. This is a short story so this could be the reason why there wasn't much in terms of description and this is why it lacked passion that other shifter stories hold.

Mate for a King didn't leave me wanting to continue reading the series to find out what happens next. I will get to them, just not straight away.

What Is It About:
Lexi is an American on holiday in England for a month. On her first day, she forgets which side of the road the English drive on and almost crashes. This is where she meets Raedwald. Raed is the historical King of East Anglia. He and his men were turned into "good werewolves" by their god Tiw, this was so that they could fight the eternal war against Fenris and his bad werewolves that thirst blood and death as soon as they turn. Raed knows that Lexi is special to him but the Fenris werewolves begin to threaten her as a way to get to him and his men.

What I Liked and Didn't:
One thing that I have an issue with when it's an American character in England or vice versa is that the author always seem to put emphasis on the language differences. Sure, there are differences like football and soccer but when these types of things are worked into a book unnaturally just so they difference is there, it's kind of annoying. I'm English and I don't think that I've said sod off to anyone.
Plot-wise, I must admit that the whole Fenris vs. Tiw is a pretty unique spin on werewolf lore so I like that. The book is just too short, everything is sped through so quickly. There was no suspense or a build up in the relationship between Lexi and Raed. Sure, I do like reading an insta-love story about werewolf mates but there was no relationship; just sex and boom I love you's are being said. Character-wise, I didn't really care for either Lexi or Raed. Lexi just seemed like such as weak woman and Raed was still stuck in the medieval times, and not in a nice historical romance kind of way but in a misogynistic way.

Final Thoughts:
I'd actually read this for the first time about 4 years ago during a phase of reading a bunch of Marisa Chenery's books. I had given it a three star rating but I can't keep it that high, if anything this is probably a 1.5 star rating because I don't regret reading it but I really don't want to read it again.
Would I recommend it? Not particularly, Miss Chenery's Wulf Den and Roxie Protectors series are better than this but I can think of much better series that all of those right now.
Will I carry on reading the series? Yes, not particularly because I want to but because 4 years ago I did read them and I don't really want to keep them at their original three star ratings if I don't enjoy them now.

Left me with more questions than answers. I liked it but it was too short, especially the scant world-building. I, as a reader, needed more information on how they became what they did. A few more pages wouldn't have hurt the story at all. I will probably keep reading this series but I won't be in a hurry to catch the next one.

Heartwarming

Love this story. I reread it often. The old king of East Anglia, who is an immortal werewolf finds his true mate in the mortal Lexi. The book has romance, hot sex, action and humor. This is also the first book in a series. I would recommend reading the series in order.

This story was short, it seemed like just when the action started getting serious the story ended. Having said that I really liked this first story of the series. The sex scenes were hot and the hero was gorgeous with his British accent.
