Deal with the Devil

Rate this book
Luz Velez is a shapeshifter who can't shift. Every time she tries to summon her inner wolf, she has a massive panic attack. Worse, her anxiety extends to the rest of her life. At twenty-seven, she's still a virgin because attempting to have sex sends her into lockdown mode. She's miserable and stuck-until Jude Jacobson comes along.

Tall, blond and dangerous, Jude is the most feared vampire in town and the minute he sees her, he wants Luz. Vampires and shapeshifters don't date but he makes her an offer she can't refuse-a blood exchange that will help her control her panic attacks and give her the life she's always wanted.

Luz is desperate-she takes Jude up on his offer. But she doesn't expect to fall for the darkly seductive vampire-or to be plunged into danger when her past comes calling. When Jude's own dark secret comes to light, she begins to question her deal with the devil and wonder if she and Jude can make it...or if they'll die trying.

Reader Advisory: Though the author handles Luz’s past trauma sensitively, some readers, particularly those with a history of sexual abuse, may find this story disturbing.

Evangeline Anderson is a registered MRI tech who would rather be writing. And yes, she is nerdy enough to have a bumper sticker that says “I’d rather be writing.” Honk if you see her! She is thirty-something and lives in Florida with a husband, a son, and two cats. She had been writing erotic fiction for her own gratification for a number of years before it occurred to her to try and get paid for it. To her delight, she found that it was actually possible to get money for having a dirty mind and she has been writing paranormal and Sci-fi erotica steadily ever since.

I haven't read many books by this author, so when I saw this one, I though 'OK, I will give it a try'. Now, I'm glad I did take a chance with this story but there was just something that bothered me. So, to be honest, I'm not really sure what to think of this one. I liked it but for such a short read, there were also moments where I wanted for the story to progress a bit faster. I wished we got double POV and not just Luzs. While reading the story, I always wondered what was going on in Jude's head. That would definitely make the read more interesting. Other than that, I quite enjoyed the plot.

“Luz…you are my light in the darkness.”

Ah, Jude, Jude, Jude! He is simply fantastic! I adored him for how sweet and patient he was with his woman, who went through so much pain and betrayal. He knew from the get go, she was special (and not just for her blood) and ment only for him. Despite being so caring and sweet to Luz, I wouldn't get on his bad side. Just thinking to what he's all capable of makes me shiver. Of course, he can also be quite the sinner, when it comes to bringing pleasure to his woman. ;)

description

As for Luz, man, I really felt bad for her. Her past is not as pretty as one would've thought. You could say she is heavily traumatized and thus that unable to complete her first shift. Also, when it comes to sexual stuff, just forget it! Because of that her 'dating life' is practically nonexisted, that is until Jude. Did I already mentioned what an amazing guy he is? What he did for Luz to help her get over her fears and trauma is simply just heartwarming. Makes me wish I had someone like him in my life.

description

The one thing that made my blood boil was her 'pack' and her family (her brother I do have to exclude). Seriously, what the hell?!!! They have no morals, whatsoever and should just be burned to ashes. Such horrible beings absolutely deserved their ending!!!

If you are a PNR fan, then there is a high chance for you to like this story. Even if you don't like PNR books, Deal with the Devil will not disappoint. This story is about healing, love, betrayal, courage and so much more. So, if you you like that kind of books, give it a try. What's the worst that could happen, right? :)

Yeah I'm going to have read anything vampire romance by Evangeline Anderson now. Pulled me in from the first chapter. Fascinating world-building, were society, mystery of the hero. Also sexy! This is my second time reading a vampire hero and were heroine. I like it.

This was a good read. The heroine was the reason I lowered some stars. In most situations she was downright stupid. I was fedup with her behavior sometimes. In the other end hero was amazing. He was very patient with heroine. Although I felt very bad for her past trauma, What I don’t understand is why she went back to those who betrayed her. She had one twisted family members. But I loved her brother. I wanted to read his story. I’m happy that he got his own happy ending. Overall a good book with loads of steam which is a given thing from this author.

Really enjoyed this one. Great main characters and past issues sensitively dealt with.
Luz family were a real piece of work, but she found a life with Jude without them.
i'm sure Ms Anderson must have a story in her about Diego and Gavin.

I've only ever (attempted to) read one Evangeline Anderson book before, and I couldn't even finish that one because it couldn't hold my attention.

I should have waited for this one.

The tension and encounters between Jude and Luz were hottt *fans self vigorously* How can you not adore an alpha-vampire who loves to.. ah.. go downtown? *fans self some more*

*ahem*

While at times, Jude was a bit Mary Sue-ish (despite his "deep dark secret", and the fact that he was, of course, a blood-thirsty vampire), I really liked him and his devotion to Luz.

Luz, on the other hand, needed several years of therapy to get over her past traumas. I enjoyed how Jude was willing to go slowly with her (outside of their first encounter, which really did make me roll my eyes at how he managed to talk her out of her panties :P), and how he was determined to keep her safe even when she was too stubborn to talk to him and instead kept running.

I swear though, I was very annoyed with the whole "didn't you get my call?!" thing between Luz and her brother, Diego. For pity's sake folks, get texting. Or something. She kept missing these super important messages from her brother, and then she'd call him and he'd freak right out on her about how he'd called and tried to warn her and blah blah blah, which was such a cheesy tension-building device and got on my nerves something fierce.

This novel had a strong focus on child molestation and sexual abuse/rape, so sensitive readers should be aware. There is no actual rape, but holy moly is there a lot of attempting, so some readers (myself included) might get a bit squicked about it. That said, it was handled as tastefully as I think it could have been, given that it was a necessary plot device.

Overall it was a nice, (hot), easy read. Solid 3 1/2 Stars

Este libro me sorprendo bastante. De hecho pensé por qué tarde tanto en leerlo.
La historia estuvo muy interesante. Y los personajes muy bien desarrollados. Solo algunas cosas hacia el final que no me gustaron pero en general fue un buen libro.

Luz Velez is a were that has never been able to shift. Because of a traumatic event in her childhood, Luz suffers from serious panic attacks that hold her back in every aspect of her life. Then Luz meets Jude Jacobson, the vampire that even other vampires fear. Though weres and vampires are supposed to be enemies, Jude offers her a deal she can’t resist: a blood exchange that will feed him and give her the ability to control her anxiety. Luz knows there has to be more to the arrangement than she’s aware, but desperation makes her take the deal with the sexy, green-eyed devil. But her new sense of control brings an evil from Luz’s past back to haunt her, and it’ll take Jude’s help – and his love – to keep both of them alive.

Deal with the Devil is one of the most intriguing paranormals I’ve read this year! Evangeline Anderson blends together sensuality, danger, pain, and healing in such a way that readers are sure to be entranced with Deal with the Devil from beginning to end. Luz is a heroine that has been horribly hurt in ways that will twist your gut. Though I won’t spoil the details, I will say that I commend Ms. Anderson on her careful handling of Luz’s ordeals and I hold a lot of respect for how Luz and Jude faced her past. As for Jude…I could have used a fan when reading about him. This drop-dead gorgeous vampire has secrets of his own which will keep readers on the edge of their seat, but what really captivated me about him was his innate kindness. There’s no doubt about it – Jude is ruthless when he needs to be, but there is such tenderness in him that he captured my heart instantly. Watching he and Luz fall in love was a great pleasure and I cannot help but sigh when I think back on them as a couple. Twists and turns, peril and pleasure ramp up the action in Deal with the Devil and I couldn’t have been a more satisfied reader. I loved Deal with the Devil and for that reason I Joyfully Recommend it!

Nope, nope, nope. I had some higher hopes for this book since Luz seemed be actually thinking in the beginning. Well, that didn't last long. It was pretty soon that she turned into a damsel in distress in constant need of rescuing. For all her talk about werewolf strength i would have liked to see her kick but a time or two. It probably would have been cathartic for her to fight off her childhood attacker, instead of just mouthing off. But no, she just turned out to be a big disappointment. By the third (or was it fourth?) danger moment i was seriously losing interest.
Jude turned out to be too one-dimensional. I realize with this king of first person narration the other characters can sometimes get lost but that wasn't the case with the brother. He read loud and clear off the pages, but what do we get from the main guy? Presented like the perfect kind of guy, kind, caring, gentle, patient... bleh. Too perfect to be real, he had no identity flaws to make him interesting and not appear just as figment of some desperate woman's imagination. Just a quirk here and there that gets on Luz's nerve, and no, omitting the truth does not count. Sheesh, she is a lawyer (of sorts) you'd think she'd figured it out that people lie for their personal gain. If we, as the readers, could have been offered a better glimpse in how his mind worked, a deeper explanation than the cliche "I saw you and I wanted you" would have gone a long way of bringing realize to this character. I liked the additional characteristic added to his vampire persona (trying to awoid spoilers, mainly cuz i don't know how to put those little hiding brackets), and would have greatly enjoyed if it had been explained further.
All in all the only saving grace was that the writing wasn't to complicated and was easy to get through. Which is why initially i was going to with a 3 star review but the more i read on the more the stars dropped off.

Evangeline Anderson is one of my favorite romance authors, and this book further showcased her skill at writing romance. I miss her writing books in the first person! Now she mostly writes all her Kindred books in the third person.

Jude was dreamy, an excellent hero, despite his true identity. I liked how EA didn't make Luz the most likable girl to please Jude at the beginning of the book. Whereas I usually try to make myself as likable as possible to make people/guys like me.

Luz's family was awful, though I would have loved to have taken a bite out of the cake her mother made. Her brother was gay but had internalized homophobia. I wonder if Diego, the brother, and his vampire lover, Gavin, had a relationship before Diego let Gavin bite him to learn more about Jude.

Luz was practically raped in the past and never shifted nor managed to pass the Bar exam because of that.

I loved Rosie, Jude's housekeeper. Whenever she said "child" 🥰 I also loved when Jude called Luz "beloved". You could tell he was smitten with her from the very start; she took longer to warm up to him.

Regarding the epilogue, I was glad the Bar was finally brought up again, but I would have liked to know if she plans to practice law in the future because Jude seems to have endless money, so Luz won't have to work if she doesn't want to. Also, how long is Luz supposed to live if Jude is immortal minus he can be killed? (Q: Now that we were bonded, Jude and I would be together forever—or at least as long as he lived. And since vampires were practically immortal, we had a long, long lifetime of love to look for.")

The fmc was so immature she seemed more like 16 instead of 27..

I don't mind the virgin part but things like not knowing what precum is and stammering words like p-p-pussy *blushes* waaa so embarrassing, had me cringing..

"His cock was long and thick, rising from a small thatch of dark blond curls like an exclamation point. "

That sentence alone just made me quit.

Dark, Gritty, and Unforgettable"
What did you love best about Deal with the Devil?
I loved the originality and beauty of this wonderful story. It was fresh, raw, and amazing. I loved the paranormals highlighted and embolden in this fabulous book. I can't get over the amazing characters that took my heart by storm and surprised me at every turn. It delighted my senses and put a bright smile on my face. I loved all of it!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Deal with the Devil?
When Jude allowed Luce to finally work through the pain in her past and let her take back control of her life for good. Even in his own discomfort, he empowered her at every turn no matter what. He laid down his heart at her feet every chance he had.

What does Mackenzie Cartwright bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I would miss her energetic spirit and her heartfelt spirit. She brings her big heart to each character she puts to life. It is such a wonderful experience!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Sometimes the devil could be your best friend.

Any additional comments?
I am so thankful to have been able to experience this marvelous story! So heartfelt and wonderfully creativity that it made my heart burst. This is one story that I will never forget!

Luz is a shifter who´s unable to shift and now lives without her pack and family. The only one she feels close to is her brother. Suffering from panic attacks and anxiety makes it impossible to concentrate during preassure. Then Jude appears, a vampire who´s got a proposition to make, exchange blood and she might be able to even shift. How can she say no? Dark secrets, prejudice and smexin.

Annoyingly perfect hero + ridiculously weak heroine who has to depend completely on the hero to be able to do anything, including shift into her wolf form + nonexistent/nonsensical relationship development + uninteresting premise = waste of time

The only good things were Luz's brother and his boyfriend- why couldn't the story have been about them instead?

ABSOLUTELY CAPTIVATING!!!
Title: Deal with the Devil
Author: Evangeline Anderson
Designation: Full-Length(But on the short side -Approximately 220 pages)Standalone Paranormal Werewolf/Vampire Romance, NO Cliffhanger
Reading Platform: Kindle Edition
My Rating: Four Sexy Suspenseful Stars*****
**Disclosure: Deal with the Devil was originally published by Ellora's Cave as an ebook in 2010. The publishing rights have since reverted back to Anderson and this is a re-release of the same book with a new cover.

Wow! It's no secret I'm a diehard Evangeline Anderson fan and love everything she writes, and Deal with the Devil is no exception! Anderson is a wonderfully gifted storyteller, exceptionally talented wordslinger, and skilled craftsman of her trade who knows exactly how to bait her hook, set it, and reel in readers. I was hooked before I even finished the first chapter. Deal with the Devil is a fast-paced, easy-to-follow, suspenseful sexy romp filled to the brim with danger, drama, angst, suspense, dreamy romance and steamy sex. The narrative is beautifully written in the first person with a single perspective from our heroine, Luz Velez. Though Anderson did a great job with only one point of view, I prefer my stories with dual perspectives, his and her, which means I came up a little short during this sexy tale, always left wondering what was going on in the head of Mr. Tall, Blonde & Vampy. The dialogue is smart, snappy, well-executed and flows effortlessly. But as always, my favorite element of this sexy short is the cast of characters, especially the two protagonists, beautiful nonshifting werewolf and aspiring attorney Luz Velez and wealthy, charming vampire Jude Jacobson. Luz and Jude may be a different species and not supposed to mix but these two characters literally set the pages on fire! Their interaction is absolutely mesmerizing and their sexual chemistry is so hot it sizzled! *swoon* Did I like this book? Yes! Very, very much! Would I recommend it? You bet but only for adult readers since it does contain explicit language and some steamy, dreamy love scenes! Will I read this author again? Abso-freaking-lutely! I've been a huge fan for the last four years and never miss a release. And fyi, is you love sexy sci-fi romance, you need to try Anderson's Brides of the Kindred Series. Twenty books and still going strong. Or try her Alien Mate Index series. They're both fabulous and they're all sexy, action-packed, standalone full-length romances with lots of steam! In other words, they're smokin' hot! lol... And finally, was I entertained? Completely! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read!

Twenty-seven-year-old law school graduate and aspiring attorney Luz Velez feels like a square peg in a round hole. She just doesn't fit - anywhere, not in the human world nor in the paranormal world. It seems Luz is a bit of an oddity, a werewolf who can't shift - a nonshifter - one who suffers from a debilitating anxiety disorder. And guess what - Xanax doesn't work on weres so she's just up shite creek without a paddle. Normal weres avoid nonshifters like the plague. Sadly, that's only one of her many problems. She also can't seem to pass the bar exam. It's not because she isn't smart because she is. She graduated at the top of her class. It's just that every time she tries, she has a crippling panic attack. But in her defense, she's only flunked it three times but who's counting? Unfortunately, every law firm in the Tampa Bay area. So, lovely Luz is stuck working as an overqualified paralegal for a human law firm in Tampa where she's underpaid and underappreciated. Of course, there's also the pesky little problem of no social life. And let's not forget the fact that she's still a virgin. How's that even possible? It seems the lovely Luz also has panic attacks when someone tried to make love to her. Oh dear! So what's a nonshifting virgin female werewolf with a useless law degree to do? Without - until wealthy Jude Jacobson shows up and makes Luz an offer she can't refuse. Oh my! But she could never consider making a deal with a vamp, especially not Jude Jacobson, the most powerful and feared vampire in the Tampa Bay area. It just isn't done. Vamps and weres don't mix, much less date. They're natural enemies. That's like a dog having a relationship with a cat. It just doesn't happen - like never! She could never consider accepting Mr. Tall, Blonde, & Vampy's miracle cure for all her problems, or his proposition, right? But you know what they say: Never ever say never! What's a girl to do, especially when dark forces and long buried secrets bubble to the surface threatening Luz's already imperfect little world? We'll see!

Luz is a shapeshifter who, because of traumatic memories, has suppressed her ability to shift and is therefore shunned by her pack. While working alongside humans and dealing with crushing anxiety in high-pressure situations, Luz meets Jude Jacobson, a vampire who is equally outcast by his people for some unknown reason. He's known as a badass and a monster, but all Luz sees is his gentleness and patience. She makes a deal with him that he gets to feed from her and she can feed from him, taking advantage of his blood's calming effects to overcome her inability to shift. Although reluctant, Luz agrees and things quickly turn sexual between them. But the past is still hanging over Luz's head and although she's falling in love with Jude, there is little chance of a future between them...even less so once Jude's secrets are revealed.

This was very promising, but didn't quite deliver. I liked the set up, with Luz needing Jude's help and their falling in love despite all the reasons they shouldn't. I also liked Jude's secret and how this affects Luz's trust in him. But overall, I didn't care for Luz and her mercenary determination to get what she wants despite how it could affect others or hurt Jude. . But then Luz and her parents are a bit unbelievable too. I should think that when one's parents barter up their 13-year-old daughter's virginity to gain pack status, that might be a good reason to stay the fuck away from them. But Luz doesn't...she just longs to be a part of the pack again. RME. Luz's annoying personality was sadly overshadowing Jude...he was patient and caring and kinda dreamy, but his personality wasn't forceful enough to match hers. He didn't shine and stand out. In fact, for all that he was an alpha guy, he basically submitted to her. Good idea, but could have been better executed.

Found this novel to be just alright. The plot summary is was brought my interest to read it when I encountered it in the Kindle selection. Its the first time I've read a book from Evangeline Anderson. Her writing was quite good and the premise of this fantasy/supernatural genre was fine. The only thing that I didn't agree with is the characteristic persona of the heroine. For instance, the Luz naivety & stupidity didn't fell well with me whatsoever. She is educated young woman who is also a virgin, wolf/shape shifter that can't shift yet. and works hard in the beginning trying to be a attorney but she suffers from panic attacks and has no love or support from her family, except from her brother.

She starts off very unlucky but all that changes when she meet a vampire name
Jude Jacobson. He was very charming, intellectual, sexy & captivating. Jude finds Luz enchanting from her sent and he obviously sensed her virginity and wanted to taste her by sucking her pure blood. What starts off as an arrangement between this vampire and wolf turns into a romantic relationship. In which its forbidden in her wolf community. This I will have to admit about Luz is that she acts so immature & dumb when it comes to her damn family & acceptance. Now let me stop with the full details before I ruin it for the next person who wants to read it.

So I rate this book with just two stars because the book wasn't awful but not that enthralling. Especially for an erotic fantasy tale. The sex was pretty hot in the story and the action was quite good the tale was gritty but not that much. Its not a book that I doubt I'd read again.

there were so many problematic things with this book

i should have done my research and checked before i read this because i dont like reading about rape/sexual abuse as part of the heroine's story but it was fucked up nonetheless.

other than that i do love vamps and i liked the main guy + the girl was okay too. the romance/sexy times was pretty good.

Book review originally posted at kittylishareviews.blogspot.com.
Luz is a shape-shifter, of sorts, who is plagued by crippling anxiety when it comes to taking tests due to something bad in her past that she juts can't get over no matter how hard she tries. This is to the point where she has never been able to shift into her wolf form in her life, if she even has one, or pass the bar exam. So when a vampire offers her his blood, which he says will calm her, in exchange for her own she is tempted into making a deal with the devil.

Jude is a vampire outcast who is known for his ruthlessness even among his own kind. Yet when he meets the beautifully curvy Luz he knows the little Latino wolf must be his. So he strikes a deal with her. Maybe together they can work out their pasts and make a brighter future.

I will not give away details, but Jude is simply astonishing. Yes, as a male, but here my credit must go to the author because I have not come across this cross and it adds to his "disability". I can honestly say this is an original spin on a vampire-shifter romance and one I was pleased to read. Dante is an amazing character and there is no one in this book that I did either not love or love to hate. The author is able to draw you into her story and everyone feels like they could be a real person, you may even find a relative of yours among them

All in all this is a book that I would suggest hands down. So get comfy and get some snacks before you grab this book because once you start you won't want to stop until you're finished.
