When a magic bike in her grandfather's garage turns bookish Aki into Biker Girl, a sassy heroine with expert biker skills, she sets out to avenge her cousin's death with the help of Kai, a childhood friend who may be turning into something more.
Wow, that plot did not try at all. The main character has no interest or skill in biking, but suddenly gets promoted to superhero because... magic? The bike has a soul??? It's not really clear. Vague conflicts with vague villains, yadda yadda yadda, she gets the boy in the last panel. What a waste of a cool concept and a talented artist. Also I'm cranky because there is one unnecessary expletive that makes this iffy for my elementary library. I haven't read much manga and now I need to seek out some better representatives.
So there is nothing deep or profound about this and with a name like Biker Girl you should not expect anything actually. I felt that overall the graphic novel could have been better it is the tip of the mill kind of story and unless you are very young (like ten years old and below) you will not really enjoy this much. I feel that Misako Rocks! Had a great time writing, drawing and thinking about this as compared to the finished product we got. Is it bad? Well not exactly, Does it have any bad ideas or teaches bad lessons? None for what it is well it deserves at most three stars and for me three stars it is.
PS
This is not about the book I just read but here in the philippines there is news that they will be extending the Enhanced Quarantine to until June 15 and hearing that news it just makes me more and more anxious about life after this. I mean how will businesses survive? How will people get more jobs? I mean at times like these I hope my fellow Filipinos will learn that true leadership is important and that we shouldn’t just vote for anyone. We will go through a recession and it will be painful and it might take awhile for us to go back to normalcy but I’m hoping that my fellow Filipinos will really learn from this.
This was a very straightforward story, which is perfectly fine. I think that this would be a good book for middle school especially. I liked the design of the bike, I thought it was super cool!
Taking a gander at Misako Rocks'! website, (http://www.misakorocks.com/) it looks like her next book, the 1st in a series, will be arriving in Fall 2008, entitled Detective Jermain. I always found the cover of this book to be especially striking (a cool pen & ink split screen front profile of the main character, Aki,) and thus picked it up at the public library the other day. While reading this story, at times I found myself laughing at silly moments since the premise is so far-fetched and odd-feeling, (i.e. one day Aki's cleaning out her garage and the very same she's brushing up against a raggedy bike that magically turns her into a hip biker girl decked out in a très chic outfit). I still was able to really enjoy reading about this female, Spiderman-like, Super Hero--a plain ol' 17-year-old who turns into a strong (and thus, hot) biker girl, flying around the city saving people from the evil biker gang that once killed her cousin. (Trivia: Apparently Misako Rocks! pens her pics for the Onion so be on the look-out for her (and Dan Savage's) column or just check it at: http://www.avclub.com/content/savagelove)
Tapi lumayan seru lah. Kirain tadinya mo cerita tentang Biker motor *gw banget gt loh* eehh ternyata sepedah. Itu mah mainannya Bike To Work people yak? :D
this was interesting - the art was the typical manga/anime. definitely geared to someone who watches the japanese anime. a cute story - a little disjointed but okay for everyone.
