This a fairly well written book that focuses as much upon Friedrich's contemporaries, particularly Turner, as on the artist himself. It offers no exhaustive analysis or detailed biography but is rather a long essay on the state of painting during the Romantic period and the manner in which Friedrich's work fitted into the larger picture. Though there are a large number of color reproductions, they are of only satisfactory quality. Oddly, the illustrations do not always match up to the text. Often the author discusses paintings nowhere shown in the book itself.
