Monty's Turn: Taking My Chances

Rate this book
Despite only just arriving on the international cricketing scene in 2006, Monty Panesar’s performances against India and in the Ashes series have catapulted him to cult hero status. Since his call-up to the England senior squad, Panesar’s life seems to have been a whirlwind of headlines and stardom, but his formative years were not those of the typical English cricketer. Taught spin bowling by a friend of his father, his first experience of league cricket was with Luton Town. His raw talent brought him to the attention of other clubs, and before finishing his collegiate degree he had signed with Northamptonshire. Now widely rated as England’s best spin bowler in the past 30 years, this is the story of the renowned athlete who has declared his ambition to be the best.

I purchased this book to read only because of two reasons - firstly, it was relatively inexpensive and secondly, because Monty Panesar went to the same university as I did (Loughborough University).

As such, I did not harbour any great expectations from the book - but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was actually a pretty decent read. It is an open, honest and humble account of the development of Monty Panesar, the cricketer - a refreshing change from the numerous self-centred and conceited accounts that get published every year!

I grew up with Monty Panesar, he is one of my very closest friends to this day. this book shows an incredible journey of the hardest working individual I have ever come across. It does not describe how he used to train alone, then do a group training session, then go to ocunty training all in one day. An incredible work ethic and a great support network, especially from our life long coach Hitu Naik.
