The novel Wiseman takes place at the oldest Black owned hotel in Philadelphia. Much history and discussion runs through the hotel throughout the course of the novel. The novel also follows many of the public events in the life of John Edgar Wideman and includes commentary on aspects of his work and literary contribution which Satell deems important.
