Prioritizing career over family cost Brooke Metcalfe Mulroney everything—her relationship with her siblings, her marriage, her children. Written off by her family, she delves deeper into her work. Until a life-altering moment offers a chance at something she didn’t know she wanted—redemption. But her self-centered ways nip at her heels as she goes on the lam to do what she knows is right.
Former Special Forces operator and founder of MiLE, Cord Taggart wages war on human trafficking by taking the violence to the wicked, determined to never again let an innocent die because he did nothing. But maybe he’s bitten off more than he can chew this time as he works to track down New York City high-powered attorney Brooke Metcalfe, who is MIA. Then there’s her brothers who have threatened to chase him into the afterlife should he fail.
Tricky are the hours as Cord negotiates many battles: freeing the captives, demolishing the Trench that has made millions off the skin-trade industry, and his growing, deep-rooted feelings for the bombshell in her highfalutin tower. Brooke must put her life—and heart—in the hands of the thick-skulled operator.

I was looking forward to Brooke’s book since Brooke and Cord’s first meet in book one. This was fast becoming a favourite in the series from the first page to the last. The chemistry, the sarcasm and the flirtation between Cord and Brooke was fun to read.
But, this was not an easy read. This whole series is about human trafficking and the darkness and horrible things happening to the victims. This book was more focused on forced labour side of human trafficking and there was really some horrible actions towards the children which would not be easy to read for sensitive readers.
The Best thing for me about this book was that we saw the three military Metcalfes, Canyon, Range and Leif reunited to save their sister. And the Banter between the Metcalfe brothers and the other heroes in this story was fun to read. AND…I…LOVED…Cord.
Canyon’s eyebrows rose into his hairline. “I think that bullet hit more than your chest. Wanting to join this family—gotta be some kind of crazy.”
This was paced, action packed and entertaining. I also like how the Metcalfes acknowledge that they are not perfect and make mistakes (though we think they are).
“I’d say welcome to the family but ‘run’ is probably the smarter thing.”
At the end of this story, I felt it was too short. Not just the book but the series. I want more, even if it is a Christmas novella soon (hint hint).
*I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions expressed are my own.*
Brooke is written by Ronie Kendig. This is book 4 in the Metcalfes series. I have not read the other books. I was able to follow along. This is a non stop action suspense book that does explore the dark world of human trafficking.
The book focuses more on the labor aspect of human trafficking. There are some deep dark things that go on with this book. The author handles this topic well and there is a disclaimer in the front of the book forewarning readers.
Brooke isn’t like her brothers. She has prioritized her career over family. She finds herself in a mess of trouble while she has been seeking out children who are missing. She is a tough broad and stubborn. She will not go down without a fight.
Cord Taggert is former special ops. He’s now in charge of MiLE. They focus on trafficking. He was reached out to by Brooke’s assistant when she hadn’t returned back home. He knows she’s going to be mixed up with some dark stuff trying to help.
This book is full of non stop action. There are some intense scenes that had me turning pages quickly. The author has done a phenomenal job in tackling this heavy subject.
Thank you to the author, publisher and JustRead Publicity Tours for allowing me to read a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own
You should read this book! This series! Not just because it's classic Ronie Kendig... ie. unputdownable. But beyond that, the way she highlights the issue of trafficking is challenging and while sometimes difficult to read, it isn't gratuitous. Other reviews cover the details a bit more, but just in terms of awesome book/important issue, this series is so, so good.
Ronie has done it again! This series has been incredibly powerful! She doesn't pussyfoot around the topic of human trafficking. While it's an incredibly difficult topic, it's one that needs to be addressed, especially in the Christian community! She hits it head on.
While this is Brooke's story, it seems like it's almost more Cord's story sometimes. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know them both throughout this story. Brooke, who is trying to do good in the world ends up in hot water. This is where Cord steps in, and wants to save the day, but she slips through his fingers. That's when the clock starts ticking.
I will tell you, this isn't an easy story. How can it be? It has to be raw and hard because that's what life is like for those being trafficked. It's scary and as a reader I was overwhelmed with grief at the evil. There's hope though! Like Cord and so many others, there are people who are fighting this worldwide crime!
As with any Ronie book there are twists and turns until the very end. I loved having Range, Leif, and Canyon in the story. Their dynamic is hilarious which add levity to this heavy story. They give Cord grief (as well as each other) as often as possible. They're also in constant danger.
The ending was a bit abrupt for me and ended in a somewhat "too easy" way. Personally, I would've preferred a more intensity to the overall end. Again, that's just personal preference.
I'm thankful that Ronie isn't afraid to tackle topics like this and does it in a way that should cause all of us to want to do more. And if you've ever wondered which books each of her characters is in, she's got a list at the end of the book!! I LOVE it!!
*I received the ebook for review. This is my personal opinion.
Ronie Kendig has given us another intense page-turner of a story. I loved reading each and every one of these books in the Metcalfes series, and I am sorry to have finished this last one, but it was a good read. This book also deals with the very difficult and sensitive topic of human trafficking. The author has written it well. Just enough details to portray the absolute horrors of it, but not too much to be overly graphic. I would like to add a word of caution here, though, that it might be a trigger for anyone with sensitivities to these issues. Brooke, the aloof Metcalfe sister, has disappeared. Only Cord Taggert really knows she’s missing, at first. But finally, her brothers also come around to the fact. What do Metcalfes do when one of their own is in a tight spot? They run to the rescue. So, what you have here is a tale of rescue. But it is ever-such-a-long journey to get there. Brooke is held captive by some really bad people. And like I already mentioned, there are some really bad things going on in this story. I was quite intrigued by the beautiful setting of Taiwan, and would have enjoyed reading those parts, except for all the difficult details that went with it. If you are looking for a good mystery to read, and especially if you like Ronie Kendig’s books, than I’m sure you will enjoy this one.

Brooke and Cord's banter and sparks have definitely grabbed my attention right from their first scene together. . I have really admired this series. It tackles several different situations and nations and unique situations of the human trafficking world. . This whole series has the grit paired with the intensity that is characteristic to this author's work. . I lived seeing the Metcalfe brothers together. Having them all together and the banter between them was one of my favorite things. Cord. I loved Cord. He was dedicated to his mission and so funny with his internal dialogue and the sharp banter he exchanged with Brooke. That banter was exactly what this book needed.
Brooke was a unique heroine in a crazy situation that had me holding my breath. This book deals with some heavy things that happen to the characters. Based on the subject it is understandable. Still it was hard. And so sad. But it is the harsh truth to far too many people in this world. The ending carried that rapid fire action that is on brand with the Metcalfe series. Do I wish that I could have seen a little more of Brooke and Cord after the final confrontation. It felt a tad rushed. I would have loved to see them work through some things but I am greedy for more. 4.5 stars . A great conclusion to not only a well written series, but an important message to not forget about those who are vulnerable in this world. I recieved a complementary copy of this book from the publisher and all opinions and comments in this review are honest and completely my own.
Ronie Kendig has delivered another story that is full of suspense and will keep you invested until the very end. Human trafficking is a hard subject to read about, but Ms Kendig writes it in a respectful way that still lets the reader know the horrors that so many victims go through.
I have enjoyed this whole series and couldn't wait for Cord and Brooke's story. Cord has cared about Brooke for awhile. Brooke is fiercely independent and has been hiding some secrets. Finally, we get to learn more about her story. We see her begin to trust Cord as he helps her work through some of her past hurts and struggles. Also, it was great seeing the Metcalfe brothers, as well as a few other characters from previous series.
This book was hard to read at times. I cried. I prayed. But I'm so thankful that Ms Kendig wrote this series, which has brought to light some very important topics that many of us probably hadn't read much about before now.
**I received an early copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.**
I tried so hard to read slowly, to savor the experience of another Kendig novel.
But they don't call her the queen of rapid fire fiction for nothing!
Brooke is by far the most intense Metcalfe story of the series. It was the hardest to read. I had to put it down and walk away more than once.
But I honestly believe this is the most important series Kendig has ever crafted. The fictional accounts of human trafficking will chill your heart and wring every drop of compassion out of you.
These stories are fictional, but the nightmare is very real. And it's hard to read, but the story must be told. And there's no one better to tell it than Ronie Kendig.
If I had one issue with the story it's simply wanting more of an ending. Maybe a happy little epilogue as a reward for getting through the tough stuff?
I received an advance copy from the publisher. My review is truthful and not solicited in any way.
Brooke by Ronie Kendig dives deep into the world of human trafficking. Just like all the other three previous books in this Metcalfe’s series. Readers will be excited to know that there is not much visualization of the sex connotations that occur. This plot focuses more on the abuse of the children and Brooke as they are forced to work the rice paddies fields with little food or not enough sleep. Toward the end, the suspense picks up at the climactic moment. Bullets flying and children screaming. Even though all these struggles, Kendig created Brooke to be a determined and driven character who wants to help those close to her. When Brooke gives her heart to someone, that person better watch out. She does not let go. Similarly, Cord, the heroine has admired Brooke for a long time and wants her to come home to her family. These story show Kendig’s heart and how awful this human trafficking trade is in our world. I applaud Kendig for taking on such a horrible topic and allowing a light on the subject, so readers can see first hand accounts of what could happen to young children and even adults.
I received a complimentary copy of Brooke by Ronie Kendig from Task Force Publishing, but the opinions stated are all my own.
I was super excited to read this final instalment in the Metcalfes series, because one, it’s been such a great series! And it’s the book has my name as the title - who could pass that up?!
And needless to say I was NOT disappointed!!! This was the perfect ending to the Metcalfes series! It gave us everything we ever wanted from these characters… and more!! As always from Ronie there is both suspense and character development in spades, and I cannot recommend this book highly enough!!! I will give a slight caveat that it is definitely an intense story, so if you don’t do well with heavy content, approach with care. But otherwise, what are you waiting for?! If you haven’t read the Metcalfes yet, you’re definitely missing out!!!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
Holy crap!! Okay, so prefacing this with 2 things: a)If you haven't read the previous Metcalfe books (Stone, Willow and Range), it's probably best that you do that first. Or just be aware that there's parts you might miss. And b)This book is hard. It's tough. It shows the dirty world of trafficking and doesn't pull a single punch. But don't let that get you down. This book does show that there are people who are looking for those victims. It shows that there is hope.
Now that we've got that little disclaimer out of the way...
Brooke has been present in the previous books but she's been very cagey and clearly hiding something as she runs away from Cord, but you never quite got the full picture of who she was/what she was doing (I mean, it makes sense since this was her book and everything but she definitely peaked my interest in the last books). I will admit to rolling my eyes just a bit when she admitted to herself that she was probably in over her head and needed help yet still refused to reach out to Cord. I could have maybe understood not reaching out to her brother's because the situation was the slightest bit complicated. But she ended up reaching out to him anyway (even if she actively tried to stop it at first) and he did come after her, so it kind of worked out. I did wish there'd been a little more on her past/the broken relationship with her ex and her kids. Like, she told Cord how things happened/why she ended up divorced but towards the end, it seemed like she was wanting to reach out but we never got to see whether she did or not. Little thing, but I feel like I could have used a little bit of a wrap-up/closure on that aspect of things.
I've kind of loved Cord from the beginning. He was able to give as good as he got when it came to all the snark and sass that came his way and it was clear that he cared about Brooke, even if he was trying to ignore (not that he tried all that hard) his interest in her. I did want someone to throttle him for his assumptions when it was revealed that Mazin and the kids were living with her. Yeah, things were half setup to point that direction but all he had to go on were pictures on a fridge and Ishwin's comments. Yet everyone jumped to "I can't believe they're sleeping together" without bothering to consider what else could be going on. Again acknowledging that there was a ton of evidence that pointed one way, I just...I feel like even before they saw all of the evidence, everyone was half condemning Brooke.
I did wish there'd been a little bit on the reunions of people. Like, we didn't need to see all the kids getting reunited, but it would have been nice to see Willow and Chiji reunited with Ginika and Adesina. Or Mazin meeting back up with Jehan and Caliyah. It kind of felt like that part got shoved to the back in order to get to Brooke and Cord's HEA. Little thing, but I did wish we'd gotten to see it.
Oh, I have been waiting to read Brooke's story from book 1 of this series. So glad to finally read her story. The book opens with a bang and the action, stressful situations do not stop until the end. This book is a continuation of Stone, Willow, and Range. Not just a continuation because Brooke is a Metcalfe but in the story line of trafficking. And once again, Ronie Kendig does an amazing job of taking us to the line of allowing us to feel the horror of trafficking without crossing the line that makes it unbearable to read. In fact, I almost read this book in one sitting because I simply had to know how it ended. Brooke has gotten herself into a heap of trouble and reaches out to Cord Taggart for help. Except did she really want to reach out to him? Not really but she knows when trafficking is involved then will stop at nothing to save those in need of help. And, even if she isn't ready to admit it to herself, she needs help. I love how Ronie Kendig brought back Brooke's brothers in this book. I mean, who doesn't love a Metcalfe? I surely do! Such powerful warriors. And not just the Metcalfe's but other characters pop in and it was fun to “see” them again. I was given an early copy of this book to read and offer and honest review. I can honestly say that I would highly suggest this book, this series. A tough topic to read about but one that needs to be brought to life. And Brooke is a powerful ending to this series.
Brooke has always been the most mysterious member of the Metcalfe family, to me. She's successful, tough, and solitary. While her other siblings have relationships with each other (and are battling various faces of human trafficking), she has walled herself off in Manhattan, where she lives and works as a lawyer. She can handle it (whatever "it" happens to be) on her own, thank you very much.
Until she can't; until she's injured and alone in Taiwan, after fleeing a man who's certainly a) after her and b) involved in human trafficking. And it only gets worse from there. And no one knows where Brooke is, or what she was doing, until she is gone.
Cord Taggert, however, has spent his post-Special Forces life fighting trafficking and rescuing the lost. And he is most definitely not going to let Brooke become one of those lost, even if she's in love with someone else. He might just be her best hope for survival.
Ronie Kendig's Brooke continues the story of The Metcalfes, who seek out victims (to save) and perpetrators (to bring to justice) of human trafficking, of the selling and buying of humans. It's, all at the same time, a sometimes terrifying story of rescue and loss; of unrequited love; of heroism and faith. (There also might be a wonderful love story tucked in there.) I recommend it to you highly, (along with all the rest of The Metcalfes books).
I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions expressed here are honest and my own.
Brooke is another wonderful Ronie Kendig novel. If you’ve read any of her writing, you know you’re in for on the edge of your seat suspense and incredibly swoon-worthy male characters. Brooke delivered on both counts.
Brooke is a character that you vaguely get mentions of in previous books, and you may likely have already formed your opinion of her. I’m here to tell you that my original opinion changed drastically. She has become a favorite character of mine. She experiences so much in this story and she is so strong and brave. I wish we had delved a little more into her healing process.
Cord…sigh. What a fantastic character. I loved him in the previous books and this book only reinforced that. Selfless and strong willed, willing to sacrifice everything for those he loves. That’s my favorite type of male protagonist.
All of the books in the Metcalfe series deal with tough topics and horrific situations, but they are so well written and inspire you to get involved. I truly enjoyed them and I will miss these characters!
I received a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher. A positive review was not required. All views and opinions are my own.
Whew, I always seem to need to take a breather to get my heart back down into my chest after finishing a Ronie Kendig read, and this one wasn't any different. This isn't the easiest series to read as it deals with a monster of a topic human and sex trafficking, but the notes and extras at the end are very clear in that the author hopes to use this series to call attention to the beast and garner support for those who are actively fighting the battle. Because while these stories themselves may be fiction, human trafficking and the horrors captives face are not. As I believe I stated in my review for the last book in this series, I wasn't a fan of the "almost cursing" that was found throughout, although I think it might have been slightly toned down in this one. But it was definitely still present. The author does not shy away from some more difficult content (see warning below), but it makes sense given the topic. In order to remain authentic and shed light on how dark the reality is, not everyone can remain untouchable. But that's also what grips our hearts and fuels the anger to do more. If we can do that for a fictional character, how much more for someone who is real?
An action-packed, edge-of-your-seat, page-turner series that will make your blood boil and your heart race, this is a series you won't want to miss.
*I received a copy of this book through JustRead Tours. Thoughts and opinions expressed are mine alone.
**content warning: there is a rape mentioned of both an adult and child, however both are off-page and I think handled as sensitively as could be under the circumstances.
Brooke is the fourth and final book in Ronie Kendig’s The Metcalfes series. The previous three books have led to this one, where Brooke finds herself the victim of a trafficking ring.
As you can imagine, this book is not a light read. The whole series has covered the intense topic of human trafficking. And Cord, the male main character in this book, has worked with the Metcalfes over the whole series to combat it as the CEO of a trafficking rescue organization. Now he has to save Brooke, for whom he also has feelings.
This story takes us overseas where Brooke is attempting to save two kidnapped children only to be kidnapped herself. We get to see the Metcalfe men join up with Cord in an attempt to save her, which is a fun part of this book, and series. It’s a page-turning story, too. But it can be difficult to read at times because of the topic. Cord is amazing and it was sweet to watch his and Brooke’s relationship grow in the middle of horrific circumstances.
I like that this series brings awareness to the very real problem of trafficking. It’s well-written with wonderful characters. While the topic is hard, the stories have you rooting for justice and a happy ending. And, I highly recommend them.

The final Metcalfe is epic! I have been waiting for the illusive Brooke's story since we met the Metcalfes back in Wolfsbane, and Ronie Kendig did not disappoint. Just like the rest of the Metcalfe books, Brooke digs deep into the tragic reality that is human trafficking, something we all need to be so very aware of. Can we just appreciate the return of the Metcalfe brothers, together? Canyon, Range, and Leif walking into a room deserve a slo-mo. Brooke and the rest of the Metcalfe series is a must-read. This is a family you want to meet.

Once again Ronie Kendig has written a winner of a story! The cool thing about this series is its not "just" a story, it's getting information out about a very real problem in our society! BROOKE shows us yet another side of human trafficking as Brooke Metcalfe and Cord Taggart search for some missing children.
Along the way, Cord demonstrates an unselfish, unconditional love in action. Brooke does some growing up, and learns a few things about herself, her family, ... and Cord ;)
I received a complimentary copy of this book, all opinions are my own.
I think the reason I love Ronie Kendig's books is that I know I'll get some funny, snarky back and forth between the characters. And... all three Metcalf brothers in action... together???? Yum-my. Canyon's retorts were fantastic. My favorite? "Pretty sure Drama King is just hoping for some mouth-to-mouth resuscitation." How can you beat that? The subject? Wow!!! I love that this series dealt with human trafficking, a sick subject but one that needs our attention. Brooke was... definitely tough to read in spots, but the subject was dealt with in such beautiful finess. I mean, Ronie is a master at bringing a hard subject in a way that is honoring to those who are effected by it. She always has had that ability to shed light on difficult subjects, be it PTSD or human trafficking. I can trust her, as a reader, to bring the subject in an honoring manner. I love that about her writing and her books. Thank you.
Brooke By Ronie Kendig Book 4 in the Metcalfes series Rating: 5/5
Wow. Just wow. Ronie Kendig keeps getting better and better. You can tell she really put in the work to make this book as authentic as possible. The story is so good and horrifying. It’s definitely not a light read but it is well written and shines a light into the darkness of trafficking. The characters are well fleshed out and I loved the romance. The story is well balanced and has something for everyone - a little mystery, a little action, a little romance. The author brings in a lot of characters from other series which was fun to see. This story could be read on its own but I highly recommend reading all the books in this amazing series! You won’t regret it!
Highly recommend this intriguing story that’s engaging, thrilling and horrifying as it shines a light into the darkness of human trafficking.
My thanks to the author and publisher for providing me with an ARC of the book. All opinions expressed here are entirely my own. No positive review was expected and no compensation received.
Brooke was such a fantastic conclusion to this series. This has been one of the most impactful, powerful, and important series I've ever read. It shines a much-needed light on the atrocities of human trafficking. And while it's been a hard read at times, it's absolutely essential.
This book was fast-paced right from the start and the intensity hardly ever let up. Brooke has been a bit of a mystery throughout this whole series, so I was glad to finally get to know her better and see what she's been up to. I also enjoyed getting to know Cord better. He's played an integral part in this series, and I really liked him.
I highly recommend this series. I can't stress enough how important it is. I hope everyone will check it out.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.
Ah, the long-awaited finale to The Metcalfes and it's a satisfying one. As with previous books in the series, it is filled with intense scenes, gripping suspense, heart-rending situations, and wonderful characters. I loved hanging out with Canyon, Range, and Leif again; I also loved mentions of other secondary characters from the author's previous books. The kidnapped are thrown into a different type of work in this book from the other books in the series but their situation is equally heart-breaking and unfathomable. Cord is a fantastic hero - humble, skilled, dedicated, intense, and an unrelenting crusader for the oppressed. Brooke bears her soul in these pages and we see her tender, bruised, and misunderstood heart. She has been the most difficult Metcalfe to get to know and she finally lets us in her life as she searches for missing children and inevitably needs Cord's help.
The author approaches the topic of trafficking with sensitivity and grace throughout the entire series and each book is worth reading. I received the book from the publisher via JustRead Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.
HUMAN TRAFFICKING · SLOW BURN ROMANCE · A FIGHT TO ESCAPE
MY REVIEW: ★★★★★/5
“‘She matters. It’s why I do what I do — they matter, the people. If they’re alone in the world, or caught in this net... Whether someone’s son or daughter, brother or sister, aunt or uncle, niece or nephew, grandkid. It’s the one lost sheep. We’re the sheepdogs, remember?’ They all knew the saying that there were three types of people: sheep, the wolves who seek to devour the sheep, and the sheepdogs who do what it takes to protect the sheep. Many times, that wasn’t pretty. In fact, it was often downright bloody. ” — RONIE KENDIG, BROOKE (BOOK 4 IN THE METCALFES)
Author Ronie Kendig has broken my heart time and again, in all the best ways, with this series. Brooke’s story was a riveting, heart-rending conclusion to the Metcalfes' collection. While delivering horrendous and heartbreaking circumstances for her characters, Kendig offered the promise of hope, of rescue and of redemption. Brooke was a novel that brought tears to my eyes, destroyed me and challenged me while simultaneously encouraging me, uplifting me and entertaining me.
In the age old battle of good versus evil, Brooke begins with a secret, as this brave, self-reliant woman sets out alone to find two children who had been taken from her care. In Brooke’s daring attempt to locate them, the action in this story begins immediately and captivated me with it’s many twists, turns, harrowing moments and nail-biting suspense. Like Kendig’s other stories, former military heroes step in and begin to unfold the mystery of Brooke’s sudden disappearance and how they can locate her. There is witty banter, tension and camaraderie between these brothers-in-arms as they join forces to wage the battle against the horrendous evil that is human trafficking.
The pace and suspense in this novel were well structured, keeping me highly entertained. The main characters were well developed. I enjoyed both Brooke and Cord Taggert so very much. Cord had a propensity to rush in to save to the day, but despite his impulsivity and sometimes exaggerated self-opinion, readers glimpse his soft, heroic heart and willingness to wage war on the behalf of those who are innocent and unable to fight for themselves. Brooke’s character arc showed the most growth as she slowly begins to realize the mistakes of her past in locking away her heart as her predicament slowly tears down those barriers and displays the beauty and assurance that can be found in sharing life with those who love you.
The romance in this story had plenty of tension, the push and pull very enjoyable. I loved these two characters together and despite the fact that I normally don’t like slow burns, I felt this one had just enough angst and flirtation to keep me happy.
Kendig once again delved into the topic of human trafficking with the utmost care and while not shying away from the hard truths, she avoided any detailed scenes. The truths were hard to read and uncomfortable to my heart, but not uncomfortable to read in the context of this novel. She balanced the darkness of trafficking and slavery with the hope of rescue.
I loved this quote that perfectly illustrates that concept: “Plans were in place. The team ready to move. Righteousness would hold evil accountable. ” — RONIE KENDIG, BROOKE (BOOK 4 IN THE METCALFES)
SUMMARY: A definite must-read for romantic suspense lovers! Please know this book, like the others in the series, is clean fiction but does touch on the very real truths of trafficking and what victims face. It is heartbreaking, but this novel is presented in a way that readers will find uplifting too.
Content and Trigger Warnings: Human trafficking including abduction, child slavery, imprisonment, child rape, abuse, electrocution, rape and misconduct of adults with minors.
*I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book from the author. All thoughts are my own and I was not required to post a positive review.
Wow. Just, wow. Brooke is a heartstopping finale to the Metcalfes drama, and it’s absolutely perfect.
It’s obvious that Kendig wrote Brooke with great concern for the victims of trafficking and with great respect for those in the military and organizations dedications to their rescue. The line between showing the brutality these people endure and what we as readers need to have in our minds is razor sharp, and Kendig walks this line with care. Kendig has written a story that will entertain us while engaging our hearts with this issue and will implore our souls to help.
On that entertainment side, Kendig has woven this entire series seamlessly into the military universe that she has created. With exciting, hunky men from previous series’ brought forward into this one, any Kendig fan will immediately fall in love – and appreciate the glimpse into their lives now. The love story is written with signature Kendig steaminess, and the best part for me is always how she shows how exciting kindness and respect can be. It did seem as if certain characters were able to throw off the trauma they endured very quickly, but that does help the plot move along. Even so, it is all done with respect and done well.
This book isn’t all about entertainment, though, and Kendig provides both information about the reality of human trafficking in the story, as well as about organizations who work to fight it at the end of the book. This is important, because if you read Brooke – and especially if you’ve read the whole Metcalfe series – you won’t be able to move on to your next book. You’re going to need to know more. You’re going to want to know how you can support the people like Cord and Brooke. You’ll want to know where the real MiLE organizations are, and Kendig shares her connections here.
One thing to note is that the style of this book differs from the rest of the series. It’s not written chronologically; instead, the story starts in the middle of the action and then italicized flashbacks fill you in on what has happened up to that point. This is done extremely well; it’s not only hard-hitting, but it draws out the suspense perfectly.
I’ve long been a fan of Kendig’s books, so I’d recommend that you start at the beginning and work your way through. I’d also say that Brooke is one of her best, though; so if you’re new to her books, grab the whole Metcalfe series and settle in. You’re in for an amazing ride.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. All opinions are my own.
This latest series by Ronie Kendig at times has been a tough one to read, and yet . . . not. This book and the whole series gripped me and opened my eyes to issues around the world. Now I don’t want to put my head in the sand but take a stand and pray for all those who are captured in this evil crime. When we hear of situations in other parts of the world, often we just shake our heads and think, “How sad.” It takes a strong determined individual to actually step out and do something about it. This book is Brooke’s story. She’s the oldest of the Metcalfe siblings, and her relationship with her family has seen better days. Right now, she’s holding a lot of secrets from them all and that’s gotten her into some hot water. From the very first line of this book to the last, I found I needed to remind myself to BREATHE! Wow! Like the other books in this series, I was captured, and yet my heart ached at the intense drama each of these characters went through. I appreciated that there was a disclaimer at the beginning of this book because it really is a book that will touch your heart with so many emotions! This book is so intense and full of deep emotions. It’s not a fluff story because it deals with issues that are heart-wrenching and very prominent in society today. This story (and the whole series) is edgy and gritty, and yet it is an eye-opener to things that are around us. It’s something many want to just sweep under the rug and not think about, but it needs to be brought to light and stopped. While reading this book I actually stopped for a bit, and prayed, because my heart was so burdened for those who are held captive by this horrific crime. When I first heard about this series, I was excited because I’ve read many books by Ronie Kendig and knew it would be powerful and impressive. I wasn’t wrong! The whole series is worth reading. It’s been fun to get back with the Metcalfe family. I will forever be deeply impacted by these books and no longer stand on the sidelines. Thank you, Ronie Kendig, for writing these stories and shedding light on a very real issue! I highly highly recommend you pick up these books to read! Your life will forever be changed! I was given this book by the publisher which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Wowza, what a stunning closer to an action-packed series! Brooke has officially become my favorite book in the Metcalfe series! I loved Brooke's character development, her chemistry with Cord, and of course, all the cameos of characters from other Ronie Kendig series. While Ronie's heart for the victims of human trafficking has shone through this entire series, it is most evident in Brooke. My heart aches, not only for the struggles of the characters in Brooke, but for all those affected by human trafficking. Brooke, like all the books in this series, is not an easy read. But it brings to light stories that need to be told. Content warning: As you can tell by the book description, Brooke deals with the subject of human trafficking. While it remains respectful of the survivors of trafficking and when it deals with sexual trafficking it is not explicit, it is not a light subject. The reason I have given this book four stars instead of five is for more personal reasons. There were a few crass references to a supposed relationship of one of the characters that I could have done without. Spoilers: Brooke is divorced and there is no mention of even an attempt to reconcile with her former husband. I believe that God's plan is for marriages to be reconciled (even though that doesn't always happen), so I would've liked to have seen that happen. To be fair, I also do like where Brooke's story ends. Conclusion: God calls us to care for the hurting and stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves. The entire Metcalfe series sheds light on an area of terrible darkness through a group of people willing to do whatever necessary to defend those who cannot defend themselves, even to the point of extreme violence. This series has awakened a fire in me to stand up for the victims and survivors of trafficking. It has also challenged me to examine my beliefs on violence on behalf of the innocent. I will be reflecting on these books for a while.

Brooke is part of a wonderful series! You’re going to want to read all of these books. They can be read as stand-alone novels. But why would you do that when you could read an entire series instead?!
This series is amazing. It tackles some hard-to-talk-about subjects, particularly focusing on human trafficking in many different aspects. While this is a challenging topic it’s done in a wonderful way that makes reading the books enjoyable while also drawing attention to this hard and horrible topic.
Add in characters who are funny and not perfect but totally relatable and you have the makings of a beautiful book! I really felt like I was in the book. The characters really reached out and grabbed me and I could see them in my head instead of just reading about them in the book.
I have to say that I have read books by this author before and I knew I was going to love this book and series because honestly, nothing bad has come out ever!
Everything I’ve read is amazing.
THIS SERIES FOCUSES ON A FAMILY NAMED THE METCALFES. There are four siblings and the first three books focus on the three brothers. Each brother got a book and now this book is about Brooke the fourth sibling and the only girl. We met our main male character in book one and got a glimpse into the chemistry he and Brooke have.
Cord comes back in this story as he is the head of MiLE which focuses on human trafficking. He is contacted by Brooke’s secretary when she doesn’t show up for work and the suspense is on! Whew. I could not put it down! Go grab the entire series today!

Brooke by Ronie Kendig is an insanely wild and terrifying ride. Each novel in The Metcalfes series is excellent and seriously intense, but Brooke takes it to another level. This book is not for the faint of heart. As with the previous three novels, Brooke deals with human trafficking. In this story, readers see the ugliness and evilness of labor and sex trafficking. There are some chapters that are really, really hard because the emotional upheaval is rough. I was simultaneously enraged and in tears. I wanted to save all the kids and destroy all the evil, nasty, disgusting, vile villains. As hard a read as this book is, I still really loved it. Considering the series as a whole, Brooke is my favorite. It perfectly wraps up all the loose threads from the three previous stories, and I loved getting to see the Metcalfe brothers work together as a team. But Brooke is my favorite because it has Cord Taggart. He is my favorite hero — a man’s man who does all he can to protect and save others, but a man who is also not afraid to show his emotions, to share his heart. I love his character. He is so good at being strong, but he’s endearingly vulnerable too. He is noble and valiant, but he is also sweet and goofy. He is excellent with details and reads people like books, and this is why he is so good at saving others. What I loved the most about his character is that he is not afraid to call things as they are. He sugarcoats nothing. He’s not mean by any stretch, but he calls a spade a spade. This is something that Brooke needs. Brooke is a fighter in her own right. She is brave and courageous and has a big heart, but she tends to hide all of this from those she is supposed to be the most open with — her family. I enjoyed watching Cord break through Brooke’s many walls and get her to recognize and acknowledge her issues and come out of her shell. Yes, Cord is a really handsome hero who wheedles his way into Brooke’s heart, but the best thing about him is that, at the end of the day, Cord becomes Brooke’s best friend. Of the many elements to this story, this is my favorite part — that what Brooke needs most of all is not romance and wooing (although that is good), but deep, real friendship, and Cord gives that to her in abundance.
Brooke is a fantastic novel, one I highly recommend! This is a story you will not want to miss. Purchase yourself a copy today. You will not regret taking this wild ride!
