It's a battle of love between two couples: the madly-smitten Marco and Ai, and dysfunctional Yukiteru and Yuno. The power of true love seems to overpower all as Marco and Ai continually foil Yukiteru and Yuno's best plans, but in the end, a plot involving a fake diary backfires on Marco, with disastrous consequences!
I debated between giving this 2 or 3 stars, and would lean more toward 2.5. There were a couple of things I really liked about it, but many more things I really didn't like about it.
High schooler Yukiteru Amano is a socially awkward loner who considers himself a bystander. He'd rather mind his own business instead of getting involved with other people, writing every mundane activity of his life in a cellphone diary. Secretly tormented by his solitude, he invents an imagery friend called Deus Ex Machina who claims to be the Lord of Time & Space. Taking pity on the lonesome Yuki, Deus grants his diary the ability to record future events. After learning that 11 other people with unique future diaries show up around Japan, Yuki learns that Deus is not a product of his imagination, and he has been selected to take part in a death game that involves fighting to become the next ruler of causality by outsmarting each other with their new prophetic devices. Luckily for Yuki, one of the death game's participants is his fellow classmate Yuno Gasai, the prettiest girl in his school who happens to love him so much that she would put her life on the line to protect him.
Speaking of Yuno, she's where most of the fun comes from. She's a severely unstable, possessive sociopath that will happily slaughter anyone and anything that get in the way of her selfish romantic fantasies. She's famous for inventing the infamous yandere trope (psycho/killer/stalker love interest) While she can technically be seen as the villain of the series and it's hard to fully sympathize with her because of how violent, impulsive and controlling she is, all of the other characters are so unlikable and bland that I often found myself rooting for her to just rip everyone else in the story to shreds.
Yuki is the main character, but he's such a whiny and idiotic pushover that I couldn't connect with the unhealthy relationship brewing between him and Yuno. I understand it's supposed to be a psychological thriller, but the story seemed to romanticize their relationship rather than portraying it for what it really was: predatory, abusive and horribly toxic. I would've rather had Yuno as the main protagonist and explore her tragic and demented backstory through much more intriguing characters to bounce off of rather than through a relationship with one of the lamest dudes in manga history.
The plot jumps around way too fast. None of the competitors have interesting personalities or motives so I didn't really feel any stakes or tension in the action. The only side character I somewhat liked is (funnily enough) another batshit crazy girl who plays the role of a cosplaying terrorist named Uryuu Minene. The dialogue could get really bad as the characters never reacted to death, betrayal or horrifying situations realistically. There's a point where a character discovers three dead bodies in his girlfriend's house, runs away in fear, then casually remains her partner for the rest of the series like nothing ever happened. There are many more scenes exactly like this where characters don't react and process things in remotely realistic or believable ways.
Some of the twists in the later parts of the series involving time and causality were admittedly cool, but they're introduced in a rushed and convoluted way which makes it feel messy overall. The action was good, there were a few emotional moments and the absolute chaotic nature of Yuno and Uryuu were exciting to watch unfold, but everything else about the characters, story and conflict of the narrative fall apart at the seams.
Though I thought the Sevents' diaries were kind of silly, I really liked where this volume went. Yuno may be crazy, but it's true that she's the one who's saved his life numerous times. She's been doing all the dirty work and Yuki hasn't appreciated her saving his life. Marco points out that Yuno has what it takes to survive and she's the only reason Yuki has survived thus far. It put things in a new perspective for Yuki and I think it has really changed how he view Yuno. Of course, this could all take a 180 degree turn in the next volume. There was some nice action and a couple of pretty great plot twists. The issues with Yuki's family are intriguing and I'm eager to see how he'll deal with them in the next volume. I liked this volume a lot more than the last two. Once again, I'm ready for more!
I guess, despite loving survival games, the setting being a mundane world makes it hard to accept it seriously. Even the cutting, killing seems funny. Additionally, it is repetitive. Yuno must have some crazy past, regarding all her capabilities to fight. And at last Yukiteru accepts being a weakling. Now, boy, work on yourself! Save your own life at least!
first of the series that I read and I kinda wish the book was more about the 7s. they were an intriguing couple. this is a creepy manga. maybe I just can't deal with child murderers. but this story is a waste of talent. the illustrations are pretty good but the story just overkill. its like trying to make some cute out of something sinister. kinda like if someone served you a glass of urine but told it was lemonade.
Great volume. Whole series can be tough to get into when I've already watched the anime several times, I figured it was time I just finally put it on my goodreads because I read the whole thing right after the anime because I wanted to see if the anime was as great as I thought it was, or if there was more to it than what I was seeing. Anime didn't disappoint, manga didn't really disappoint either. Both were pretty great!
My least favourite volume so far. Everything felt too repetitive and in my opinion "7th" weren't as compelling as they were clearly meant to be with their eternal love etc. Only surprises came from Yukiteru's dad but he oozed trouble and selfishness the moment he was introduced, so even in a series full of betrayals and cruel characters I really disliked him.
ojciec próbuje cię zabic poprzez zniszczenie twojego telefonu, pozniej zostawia cię na pastwę losu kradnąc ci spadochron. "może nie jest dobrym człowiekiem, ale..." ON NIE MA W SOBIE NAWET CZESCI DOBROCI???? Yuki jest oficjalnie najbardziej naiwnym 14-latkiem ja świecie

It's a battle of love! It's the smitten couple, Ai and Marco, against the unstable, and barely a relationship, Yuno and Yukiteru. Ai and Marco claim that their love is strong enough to overpower anything, and since they've defeated Yuno and Yukiteru several times now, it seems to be true! How will Yukiteru and Yuno win when the only love in their "relationship" is coming from the one psychotic side? And if that weren't enough, Yukiteru's sleaze of a father comes back around only to steal and destroy Yukiteru's cell phone for money. How can a young boy ever sort out all of these feelings?
Urgh. Normally the only rating this volume would get would be three stars, but I really liked Ai and Marco so I guess I'll give it four. You know, somehow, I think I've matured since I left off on this series, because Yuno and Yukiteru seem really shallow to me. Actually, pretty much ALL of the characters are shallow except for Rea (Yukiteru's mother), Ai, and Marco. AND GUESS WHAT? THEY'RE ALL DEAD NOW. ALL OF THE WELL ROUNDED CHARACTERS ARE DEAD. *Holds the bridge of my nose while having my eyes shut, and sighs.* I'm almost glad that I'm nearing the end of the copies in English, even though I'll never get a good ending... At this point, I don't expect a good ending anyway, though. There really isn't anything else in this volume worth mentioning. Except for Yukiteru's sleezeball father, but don't we already have enough of those to deal with in the real world?
Really good story line and a great concept. Another one that's a lot better than the hunger games. Good characters. Lots of horror, romance and plot twists. Some violence.
Sip, sufrí con este manga pero no tanto como en el anime que mostraba un poco mas la vida de Ai y Marco que lo hacia dolorosamente realista, aunque si lo disfrute.
