This book is a suspense novel about two reporters who end up working together to solve some connected murder crimes. As they do so, things get more and more dangerous for them as they delve deeper and deeper into these mysteries.
This was about 90% cheesy and 10% suspense. Overall it was just okay. I did find the reporter angle interesting. There was one loose end that I didn’t see tied up but it was not a big deal.
I have to admit, while Klingler did a great job of weaving the plots web of criminals, paper trails, drugs, and stolen artifacts, I was disapointed in the lack of suspense. There was never once in this book a time where I felt I just couldn't put it down. The romance was very predictable, and even tracking down the bad guy was predictable since she gave away who he was at the beginning. The only mystery being of how he was connected to it all and how they would prove it. I feel there was a lot of unreached potential with this plot. I have to stop at 3 stars.
The romance in this book is my favorite that I've read in a long time. Sydney had a lot of fear and personal defenses to overcome, and I love that Justin was so steady and patient and loving. I thought the friendship and love they developed for each other was very well done. The suspense part was also well done, I think, but I agree with others here that this was much more of a romance than a suspense novel. I enjoyed this one so much I went out and got my own copy. :) I'll definitely be reading this one over and over again.
I loved this book! I read reviews here saying they were disappointed it didn't have more suspense, but I, personally, though the balance was perfect. I love reading romances that have a bit of bad-guy conflict weaved in, and this one was just right. LOVED the romance between the main characters--I felt touched and moved on more than one occasion. And the bad-guy stuff was enough to keep me biting my nails. I really loved this book! I'll eagerly look forward to the next book by this author!
So much more a romance than suspense story. The suspense part was fascinating, but I kept rushing through those parts just to get back to what was going on with Syd and Justin. The romance was about healing, trusting and having a little faith. Great characters- I wonder if the pixie haired girlfriend will get a story soon,... or possibly a love interest for Agnes?!??!
This was a fantastic book! There were moments I was on the edge of my seat or where I couldn't put the book down. The romance between Justin and Sydney was absolutely beautiful! Definitely a suspenseful book to read!
i am the biggest cover shopper known to man. if it looks stupid i won't read it or buy it unless someone tells me it's good. this book looked like it would be an interesting mystery novel. it's got the creepy bruce willis looking dude on the cover, shrouded in darkness. so i grabbed it. i'm now surprised i actually finished it. this book was more of a romance than anything i've read in a long time. the story focused more on the two lovebirds than the mystery portion i was most interested in. there were times i couldn't even follow the connections that were being made because there was so much fluff in between. now covenant, why oh why did you make the cover of this book look like a mystery when the story itself was more about two reporters falling in love? for those who like romance novels - you would probably like this one a lot.
This book is more romance than suspense. Either a sequel is planned or some important loose ends weren't tied up in the end. I constantly had the feeling the mystery/suspense portion was bigger than the author knew how to handle and the romance sounded eerily like another well-known LDS author's style. It includes the usual B movie cliche of the smart heroine suddenly doing something dumb that, of course, lands her in trouble, and she has to be saved by the cavalry. It's well paced, holds the reader's attention, and is a fun light read.
WOW Erin, love it love it love it, I can't wait for the next one, I have found my new fav author! I could not put it down, I am a suspence junkie so I loved this book, I enjoyed the romance in it too, there was just the right amount too, not too much. If you haven't read this book yet it is a must read. Even Seagull book thought so, when I was there the other day I saw that Between the Lines was number 7 on there top ten, not easy to do for a first book.
Thank you Erin for a great read, I hope there are many more of your books to come so I can fill my bookcase with them.
When San Francisco reporter Sydney stumbles upon an undercover crime ring it could be the biggest cover up and the biggest story of her career. She teams up with Justin, a reporter for the Salt Lake Tribune to bring down this crime network and the man who is at it's head, US Senator from Utah, Robert Longhurst. Not much of a thriller as a lame romance. I thought the whole thing fell a little flat. But if you love romances, you'll really like this book.
This was an enjoyable book, although it was a lot heavier on the relationship/romance than on the suspense. Even though this wasn't my favorite LDS suspense novel, I will definitely read any other books Erin Klingler writes.
There were no swear words Suzette. A good story. I enjoyed it. From start to finish, I kept wanting to know more. I think they could do a series on this book.
The book was really good until the last ten chapters and then it was the same thing over and over again. Get a lead, go to a sketchy place, get hurt, go to the hospital. Repeat. Honestly would have been so much better if it ended ten chapters earlier, they had a decent resolution that could have been altered slightly to be a full resolution.
If you like cheesy, predictable and gaggy romance. I struggled to really get into the the love story and the mystery. I listened to this one and the narrator drove me crazy. The church add ins were cringe -worthy to me too. But it’s a clean romance and mystery so there’s that.
Super enjoyed this book! It moved along at a good pace, not boring at all, enough spy/intelligence/police/corruptness that it kept my interest and feel like it would make a fun movie! Read it!
I would love to have given it more because I think it had potential for it, but I couldn't once I got to the end.
There were a few loose ends that didn't get tied up. Between those loose ends and the more anti-climatic ending that I felt had been building up, I couldn't give it a bump up.
However, the story itself was good. I enjoyed the investigative journalist side of it. But man, I needed her to wait for the authorities so many times it is crazy.
Sydney Hallam is a journalist for the San Francisco Chronicle who is married to her work. She lives for getting the story, for taking down the criminals, and championing the little guy. She expects there to be some repercussions--after all, if she didn't ruffle some feathers in high places she wouldn't be doing her job.
However, she's got some leads on a big story with consequences she may not be ready for. When a source doesn't show up for a meeting, she doesn't think much about it at first. Later, she finds out he was murdered. She knows she's onto something that could implicate many prominent people--she had just better watch her back if she wants to survive to write the story.
Meanwhile, Justin--a good friend of the murder victim, and also a reporter for the Salt Lake Tribune--comes to San Francisco for the funeral. While he's there, he has permission from his boss to look up Ms. Hallam. It seems some of the criminals she's hunting down have ties to Utah. If they can work together, they might just see this thing through. Falling in love would be a bonus.
* * * * * A plot that kept me reading to find out what happened next! This one did a good job making the suspenseful situations believable. It's one of my pet peeves with this genre: too often it seems the main character (your average girl or guy) somehow takes on the bad guys--singlehandedly--and wins! Anyway, this one seemed more realistic in that regard, particularly as far as what was left to the police, etc.
The romance was sweet, but not overpoweringly so. It was a good mix.
p.s. Is that cover creepy, or what? Nice job, somebody!
Two reporters meet after the death or murder of Justin's friend, Bryce who was a cop in San Francisco. Justin, who is a reporter at the Tribune in Salt Lake goes to the funeral and meets up with Sydney to follow up on a letter that he got from his friend the same day he would have been killed with the concern for the corruption within his precinct and higherup officials with what was overheard. This starts the cooperative arrangement of Justin and Sydney to get to the bottom of a money laundering, drug, and blackmarket rig going on with the Utah senator and the businesses in San Francisco that get the opporation going. They find they work good together in work and in life. Their lifes are in danger as they get closer to the truth and the danger puts Sydney into remembering the loss of her family. She makes the decision to let the walls of her heart down and let love in toward Justin deciding it is better to love and loose sometime than not love at all. When the case is wrapping up she moves to Utah to be closer to Justin and he proposes. She also gets hired on at the Tribune as the other investigative reporter with Justin. Life is good and the bad guys are behind bars. They no longer have to look over their shoulder wondering if another hit man is hired to take them out.

I have to admit my prejudice/bias. I prefer a story where the romance, should there be one, is secondary to the main story line. In this book, the romance was the story line and the investigation was secondary. This is entirely my perception. If at least 1/2 of the story of the relationship had been cut out, I would have liked the book better. The slower pace of the romance made the story of the investigation less suspenseful. It wasn't that the romance part was bad in and of itself but it seemed to slow down the story of their investigation. For people who read the book for the romance, that would be fine but not for me. I did think the author had good command of the English language and the book flowed well. I would read more by this author. This book was OK.
Sydney Hallam, hard-line journalist for the San Francisco Chronicle, is poised for action after receiving a tip from a mysterious source that criminally implicates several influential power brokers—but her source is gunned down before he can disclose any details. Days later, Salt Lake Tribune reporter Justin Mickelsen receives a letter from a childhood friend—the murder ...blah blah blah blah
I only finished it because I was waiting for a Realtor to show my house. Slow, wordy, and not enough focus on the "suspense" as noted in the title. Not recommended.
When his friend, a policeman in CA, is killed, our hero (a reporter in Utah) teams up with a reporter in CA to find out what happened. The uncover drug running and black market artifacts, murder, adventure and romance. Though I felt that the book was supposed to show that men and women can work together equally (not downgrading the women) it pushed the women angle too hard and didn't let the man be equal. He was more a token character to sit back and admire her. Maybe a 3-.
This was my first foray into the LDS-mystery genre and I must say this book was pretty cheesy. I agree with a lot of other comments about how the love story took up too much of the book leaving little room for the real "mystery" story. I do like how the story was clean and listening to it on CD did help pass the time doing household chores but I had many "gag-me" moments.
