'Complicated Moonlight' is the second in author Lynessa Layne's 'Don't Close Your Eyes' series. Written for young adults and those who enjoy romance and suspense, this book is smoothly written and moves forward at warp speed. The story is fueled primarily by sexual tension between 24-year-old track star, Kinsley and a mysterious and seemingly dangerous older man nicknamed 'Moonlight,' and between Kinsley and Jase, a major crush and the brother of her best friend. Of course, this is not to mention the tension and odd companionship found between Moonlight and Jase. For those of us who may have forgotten some of the stresses of being adolescent and post-adolescent, author Layne nails the emotional and physical turmoil of these years through exceptional characterization. And she also creates mystery through them, because as the reader moves into book 3, 'Mad Love,' s/he still has no idea why Moonlight is behaving like he is a paramilitary leader fighting a rogue band of dangerous men who keep showing up around Kinsley. I still question why Kinsley tends to call the males around her 'sir' at times, but assume this is an odd quirk of her character. For those who are not prone to reading intentional violence, there is a disturbing scene in this book that some may choose to skip. I already have 'Mad Love' purchased and ready to read!
