Hermann Sudermann (1857-1928) was a German dramatist and novelist. After working as a journalist and editor he devoted himself to writing, beginning with a collection of naturalistic short stories called Im Zwielicht (At Twilight) (1886). His novels, Frau Sorge (Dame Care) (1887), Geschwister (Siblings) (1888) and Der Katzensteg (Cats' Bridge) (1890) failed to bring the young author as much recognition as his first drama Die Ehre (Honour) (1889), which inaugurated a new period in the history of the German stage. Sudermann returned to novels with Es War (It Was) (1894). Another successful drama, Heimat (Homeland) (1893), was translated into English as Magda, and productions featured some of the best known actresses of the time. Throughout the 20th century, his plays have been the basis of more than thirty films. The most important of his later works are Litauischen Geschichten (Lithuanian Stories) (1917), a realistic portrait of his homeland, and a volume of memoirs in 1922. His last major work, written after the death of his wife in 1924, was Die Frau des Steffen Tromholt (The Wife of Steffen Tromholt) (1927), a semi-autobiographical novel.
Educated at Koningsberg University and the University of Berlin, Sudermann had to give up his studies because of financial difficulties. He worked for a time as a tutor before becoming a journalist in Bern, Switzerland. He returned to Germany in 1881 and became the editor of the Deutsches Reichsblatt. Thereafter, he devoted himself to writing. In 1886, he published Zweilicht, his first novel, and followed in 1887 with Frau Sorge, which was critically acclaimed. His first drama, Die Ehre, or The Honour appeared in 1889 and was enormously successful. Sudermann also produced a number of short stories. His other works include Geschwister (1888), Der Katzensteg (1890), Sodoms Ende (1891), Die Heimat (1893), Morituri (1896), Es Lebe das Leben! (1902), Es War (1904) and Stein unter Steinen (1905).
A great tale of the development of a young boy, Paul, born to a loving mother and abusive and incompetent father. As his older brothers go off to college and his younger sisters remain frivolous and carefree, he remains with his financially ruined parents. He develops a close relationship with his mother and defers his enjoyment of life to duty, tending to the dilapidated farm they move to. Throughout his life he encounters the lovely Elsbeth who admires him but he, lacking any self worth, focuses on maintaining the farm and looking after his sisters, worried and encumbered by many setbacks such as a fire and his father's idiotic deals. He has a cathartic moment towards the end and reaches fulfillment. Throughout the story he is haunted by the spectre of a fairytale his mother told him of Dame Care, a frightening grey woman who takes a boys soul and enjoyment in exchange for his survival from ruinous poverty. Overall a beautiful tale with nice symbolism and a great and entertaining story to read.
Schöne Sprache und viele malerische Formulierungen. Es war sehr interessant dem Innenleben von Paul zu folgen. Einem der alles für andere tut und sich schilt sobald ein Gedanke über sein eigenes Glück in erreicht.
