Friendship, glitter and glamour, cats! I really enjoyed this book!

So far most of my Boekenfestijn books have been second or more in a series, but I apparently was lucky with this one! Yay!

I loved that the book had hilarious moments, but also serious moments. Jess lost her mom not that long ago and she still misses her loads. Then there is the fact she moving away from her grandma's place to be with her dad. And she is also working hard on getting better with her swimming. Alisha (one of the bigger side characters) also has her fair share of things in her life (and I didn't like her at first, but later on I could understand her much more). There is lots of seriousness, but also hilarious situations as she falls in love with not just one boy, but two! (Though I am not really a fan of love triangles, but it was pretty nicely done in this one.) She tries to hide her cat when he has to leave. There are visits by a new cat who keeps escaping his home. And then I haven't even talked about Jess and her mates. I just loved Pia and Jess together, they are such fabulous friends!

I wouldn't have minded seeing those apartments myself. It sounds like a dream place. Though only the rich and fabulous get to live there. Or, well if you are staff, but then you are not technically living there. :P

Jess was a delightful girl, I loved how silly she was. Her zombie queen routine, haha, I would have done the same, and then just like her, be embarrassed about it because I did it in front of my crush. I also liked how she was with her brother. Often brothers/sisters would be fighting, but these two were pretty tight and close. I loved that!
And I just like a girl who loves animals and treats them right.

Plus Jess and her mates were just great. We mostly see Pia and Jess together, but we also catch glimpses of Meg and Flo. They are really fabulous friends, Jess is lucky to have such great friends who care about her, protect her, and are there for her. And they are just as mad/crazy as Jess is.

I had some problems with the dad. How he didn't give his kids a bit more time to get used to the situation, maybe even talk with them about it. Instead he moves them away, and then works almost the entire day, which is definitely not helping his kids get used to things. I get that he is also getting used to everything, but maybe it would have been better if he had gone there first, and then later brought the kids.

I also felt so sorry for Jess. She had such a hard time getting used to the whole situation. Every time she got a bit of happiness that was thrown away again. Like with her cat, or with the swimming. Not even to mention how Alisha was acting. I just wanted to hug the poor girl and tell her things would be all right.

I get why they named it Million Dollar Mates (it is explained near the ending), but it still seems weird as it takes place in the UK... and they don't have dollars there. So maybe Million Pounds Mates sounds better then.

The ending was terrific, it was so exciting, I was rooting for her (no, I wasn't wearing those caps).

Definitely going to see if I can find the other books in this series. Even though I am a bit worried about the JJ x Jess x Tom situation. Hopefully she will just sort it out in the right way. Though darn it, if I had known I would like this book so much, I would have taken the other book I saw at Boekenfestijn as well. :P

Recommended to all looking for a fun, but also serious book!

Do you still enjoy teen drama?
.
#bookreviewofateenflick
Jess is just fourteen and struggling with the emotional turmoil associated with her mother's recent death and is trying to cope with her new address which she shares with her father and brother. And, the residence also houses various A-listers from Hollywood and the richest families around the world, which adds on more drama in her life! She is witty and has a great sense of humour which really made me burst out laughing at times. Her tryst with crush in school, her PJ parties with her best buddies and crunch in pocket money reminded strongly of my teen days.
.
I got this book while arranging one of my bookshelves, it was tucked between two old books. The pink spine attracted me and I started reading almost instantly. The blurb seemed easy-going-teen-drama and I didn't have much high hopes. But, the flow of the story is really good, which didn't make me stop reading it. It took me just a few hours to finish this elegant book and it was almost like a ride down the memory lane. Moreover, after a long time I read a happy book.

SYNOPSIS:
Jess Hall is going upmarket! Her dad's got a new job at Number 1, Porchester Park- the luxury city apartment block- and he's moving Jess, her brother and her pet cat Dave in with him.
Jess isn't too sure about moving away from her school friends or her beloved Gran until she learns the apartments are strictly A-list only and soon to be populated by actors, musicians, models and millionaires.
A life of glitz and glamour surely beckons... but will her new million dollar mates be all they're cracked up to be?
MY THOUGHTS:
I loved this book and wished I read it as a child when I had the book, you can tell it's for the younger adults but I still enjoyed it and liked how it had a few jokes in it and some funny moments and also shows that money doesn't always bring you happiness no matter how much you have. I have rated this book 4 out of 5 stars.

Million Dollar Mates is the first book I've ever read from Cathy Hopkins, (yes, I know that's pretty bad of me!) and to be honest, I wasn't expecting too much from this. I thought it would be a light read for the weekend. Just glancing at the pink, sparkly front cover suggested a flighty read filled with a load of girly talk and expensive clothes etc.
While it did indeed include this, it was also a lot deeper and meaningful that I had anticipated. Cathy Hopkins surprised me by tackling the loss of someone you love dearly, trying to manage the grief, and how to carry on through life. Hopkins did this gently and used main character, Jess, to show us all of the emotions you go through.
I am incredibly glad this plot had that topic, as it added maturity to the story. I sort of wish the cover wasn't quite so glam and glitz, as it probably puts off several people who dismiss it as too girly and with no real meaning.
Anyway, on to the characters. Jess, our main girl, was perfect. She was a typical teenager with a lot thrown at her. I loved the story being told from her perspective, as she explained all the emotions about losing her mother, dealing with her new dad, trying to get her around boys etc. brilliantly! I really emphasised with her. The way she talked about her mother leaving a bit hole in her heart made me realise just how important Mum's really are. It's all of those little things they do that make them so amazing.
Pia, Jess's best friend, had such a fun spark to her that you couldn't help but love her character. She was cute and caring and is the type of friend you would be lucky to have. Their friendship had me laughing along the way.
Of course, how can I forget to mention the boy's? You have Tom - confident, good-looking, and pretty full of himself. Then you have JJ - tall, dark and handsome, down to earth and radiating charm. It's probably pretty obvious who I prefer, but then I guess we just have to see who Jess chooses in the sequel, Paparazzi Princess!
Some of the characters fell to the wayside slightly, mainly Charlie and their Dad. I would of liked to read more about the two, and feel they could of offered more to this novel. Hopefully the other books in this series will involve more of them.
Sometimes I think people really do believe money is everything. Brand names, big parties, fit to burst purses - I have a friend like that who I would love to lend this book to. It would teach her a few little morals about life.

Overall, this was a fantastic read that proved Cathy Hopkins to be a writer that I'm glad I have tried! I definitley will read Paparazzi Princess, which is out now.

Well written YA book. Interesting read however a lot of things said by the teen characters don't always say things that would be similar to what an average teen would say now. However Cathy covers mourning, grief and romance very well and makes a relatable yet fantastical fiction book.

An AMAZING book. I loved to hear about Jess and her lifestyle. Great to get to know the boys and friends in her life and to meet a new girl, Alisha. At first, they don’t get on so well, but as time grows, the two girls end up to become close friends. An amazing read and absolutely true story. Loving your books, Cathy. I have read the first three and can’t wait to read the last two. I am getting them as one of my gifts for my birthday in the summer, so I am excited for that. Definitely worth spending the money to buy it. Able to buy online and in store.

Million Dollar Mates, is a sweet and easy read for all teens/YA fans.
So if you're looking for a quick book to pick up, then I'd definitely go for this one, and even the whole series.
It gives the reader a clear perspective of how life can change, seemingly for the worst, and learning to come to terms with the positives and giving yourself time to move on, that Jess later discovers is for the better.
Genres; romance, narrative,
Suitable for 11+.

In the beginning that teenage story is soooooo boring, but then it becomes more interesting with the friendship between Jess & Alisha. Love it,but still it can be more interesting & also I didn't like the fact that Jess's choice wasn't made between the two of the boys.

Since passing my collection of 'Mates, Dates' books and a few of my copies of 'Truth, Dare, Kiss, Promise' to others, I have read very little Cathy Hopkins. When I picked up this book in the library yesterday, I expected very little from it. I thought it would be a light book for a Saturday evening read.
I was pleasantly surprised by the moral running throughout--money can't buy you happiness. Hopkins writes very well, with a clear perception of how hard it can be to live the life of a teenage girl. Although at times I felt the story was lack-lustre, there were humorous moments.
All in all, although the book was not my favourite of all the books written by Hopkins, it is not bad. I will probably read others in the series, but I doubt I will actively seek them.

Million Dollar Mates may seem like another girly, boy-obsessed, light-hearted book - and some aspects of it is - however Jess' story digs deeper than just (hilariously) embarrassing mix ups and petty school fall outs. It's about a teenage girls struggle to accept the loss of her mother just when she needs her. It's about learning to accept change and solving some of life's most difficult problems. It's about living with grief and letting go. Cathy Hopkins mixes the hilarious mis-haps of a teenage girl finding her feet with the life-changing experience of a significant loss to create a beautifully moving story about love, life and - most importantly - mates.

at first i actually thought this book was rubbish, to be frank. but, after the first maybe three dull, typical teenage book chapters, it was actually alright! i admit, i thought it was a bit annoying, because the general theme was that if you want to do anything in life you have to look amazing and buy the right stuff. i hate it when people think that. but apart from this, i thought it was really good, and i got really into it after a while.

Got this for my friend's daughter and have to confess began to read it to check it out and got engrossed! I loved it and think it will appeal to all ages. Quirky and fun, while at the same time covering some pretty serious topics. What is especially good though is the way that the underlying serious issues are treated. Not heavy duty, or weighed down by moralistic lectures but nicely resolved in a perfect use of show don't tell. A great read for girls of all ages!
