I liked this book, though I think it was written towards an age group of 6 - 12 years old.
The author poled a number of broadcasters, former players, and journalists to help him be on a "Blue Ribbon Panel"in order to select the 25 greatest players in the game. Each player is given a small write up about their career, and maybe some note of a personal nature too. While the reader can tell that it was written towards younger fans, it was well written and interesting enough to capture the attention of adult fans, (though in truth, long time fans might not learn anything new), and pictures were fun to look at even though many of them are well known.
The fun thing about the book was seeing who the "experts" deemed as the 25 greatest players. Some of them are no-brainers, such as Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, Hank Aaron, and Cy Young. But some of the selections will bring about disagreements. For instance, Alex Rodriguez is one of the 25, and it is questionable as to whether he deserves to be on the list. Bob Gibson was on the list, but Sandy Koufax, Satchel Paige and Whitey Ford were not. Mike Schmidt was on it, but what about Reggie Jackson? These are some of the questions that make the book fun and enjoyable, as most baseball fans will have a different set of 25.
While this was a book I think was geared to beginning fans, all fans will enjoy the book, not only for the stories and pictures, but also for the fun of questioning the selections. I would recommend this book for baseball fans, young and old, and especially to the parents of young new fans as this is a good bedtime story book to read.
