The heroine of the novel Rising Wind is Mary Patch, a free-spirited teenager who is born in 1844 in New Market, Va., and dies on the battlefield of the fierce Civil War battle of New Market. She meets Tom Tavern, a cerebral instructor at VMI (Virginia Military Institute). On walks near New Market, they talk about Plato, Spinoza and other philosophers. Like Mary, Tom also dies on the battlefield.
