YOU ARE NOW ENTERING TEXAS. SAY YOUR PRAYERS.

The national bestselling western authors William W. Johnstone and J.A. Johnstone return to their bestselling Death & Texas series with a fresh new cover package.

DEATH ISN’T PRETTY

There are a million ways to die in the great state of Texas. And on the lawless streets of New Hope, the odds are even worse. Once the home of Comanche, the region has been up for grabs since the settlers drove off the natives. Now it’s a magnet for settlers looking for cheap land, merchants looking to exploit its resources—and outlaws looking for a place to hide in between robbing and killing. With shootouts and showdowns being a nightly occurrence, it’s one of the deadliest places on earth. And the governor ain’t happy about it. He wants to clean up the town. He wants to wipe away the scum. And he knows just the man to do it. . . .

Enter Cullen McCabe. A small-town sheriff turned special agent, McCabe doesn’t care what he has to do—or who he has to kill—to rid this hellhole of every rustler, robber, and ruthless cuss in sight. Especially the notorious Viper Gang. . . .

Great western story - Cullen McCabe was a small town Sheriff but now he’s a Special Agent for the State of Texas hired to do jobs that other lawmen can’t or need help to handle.

He is on assignment to track down and stop the Viper Gang, an especially vicious gang of 12 outlaws that rob, rustle cattle, and kill ….men, women and children without a moment’s hesitation.

And now this gang’s vicious leader has managed to get himself appointed as Sheriff in a small peaceful town hiring his outlaw thugs as deputies. The town’s citizens are in big trouble. McCabe is only 1 man, and he won’t be stayin’ long…”just passing through”, he says. Will he turn out to be an Angel is disguise?

One of the Johnstone’s best! Loved it.

This is one of the best Western novels I ever read; non-stop action from page 1 which doesn't relent until the the book is over. The book goes from one escapade to another, & just when you have it figured out what's going to happen next or how something is going to end, poof, it happens differently and even more enjoyable. One of those books you wouldn't mind if it didn't end just yet! For anyone who loves the Western genre this is definitely a must read.

Little better than first book

I know both outlaws and lawmen would always be on alert however why is it that all towns people would think McCabe was an outlaw not a lawman when he's helping enforce law. Also reconstruction Texas there was still Comanche and othe native tribes still were raiding people that were so unwilling and unable to protect themselves would not live in rural Texas or the west. One of real positive like with first book the author of this book didn't have McCabe carrying a Henry rifle. There is a lot of action and author didn't get hung up on too much details or constantly repeating everything that happened previously. I also wish they would include who the real author was like used to on paperback books it would help determine how writing was depending on author.

As I mentioned on the previous book I just read on this series, a good western read is a good comfort zone for me. I’ll read some real intense books and I like going back to my western to take a little break. In saying all of that, I’m glad I stumbled into this series, I really enjoyed it. There are some moments that are little over the top but overall, a great read.

I picked this book up at a local Dollar General on my way out of town. Forgetting to buy a book for the trip I remembered Dollar General had a book rack. I paid 3$ for it and I was pleasantly surprised with the story. It was the first western I have ever read. I am looking forward to another book in this series.

Didn't want to stop reading

Loved the characters and how it was written so it made sense for that time. The bad guy was so awful I knew his fate, but was still surprised at how he died.

A fun read about the old west. The main character, Cullen McCabe is a 19th century terminator in this book. He lives to fight on in another William Johnstone book, I'm sure!

captivating

As usual I involved in the story from beginning to the end. I would be so involved that I could see you water in the streams. I could feel the fear and pain of the victims involved in the crimes. I was able the righ there to witness the gun battles. As usual it was a great read.
