As you travel through the Okefenokee Swamp, keep an eye out for Tiger Swallowtails and Brown Thrashers, and be sure to pick some Yellow Confederate Daisies before taking a nap under a Live Oak Tree. This is the Georgia that becomes a wondrous reality within the beautiful rhyming verses of Carol Crane and the colorful images of Mark Braught. At the same time the rhymes entertain and inform younger readers, Crane's in-depth expository text will appeal to older ones, creating a two-tiered teaching tool for educators in the Peach State and across the country.
Great book for older readers taht involves the Alphabet. Great information on Georgia and fun informative facts for every child. First- 3rd grade readers would all enjoy this independently or as a read aloud. Great for a classroom library!
Wow, I loved this alphabet book for Georgia! There are short verses of poetry for each letter, along with several paragraphs describing more about the letter. This is a book I would love to own!
peaches any one? the hubby and i have traveled all state (many provinces of Canada, so we know a thing or 2 about the USA & Canada, maybe one day overseas, we will see??!) point being that Georgia is one state that if you wanna fit in ... u better have every hair in place ... most ladies there are makeup on, outfits in place, all ironed and to the nines .. heels and their hair is in tip top shape ... i will never fit in there. i always have a hair or 2 out of place ... so i always get a head turn or 2??! i am okay with that ... but Georgia ladies are 2 beautiful ... all respect ... just saying. state parks are gorgeous, mtns are lovely, great foods, awesome SWEET TEA. it is hot though. so takes some cool attire or you will heat right on up ... find a cool front porch and enjoy. lots of history.
I enjoy the alphabet state books, but I was disappointed by this one. There was nothing about MLK or race which feels like a miss for a book about Georgia.
From state bird to popular vacation spots, P is for Peach is a great introduction to all things Georgia. Written as an ABC book, Crane includes rhyming verses for the alphabet and also a detailed account of what makes those subjects from the alphabet so unique. The detailed nonfiction accounts make this book perfect for children and older readers. More facts are included after the alphabet along with a list of references to continue learning.
Being from Georgia, this book was a treat. I was hesitant to add it to my reading assignment, but realized that it was age appropriate because of the nonfiction information provided. I learned a great deal from this book. I did not know that you could eat a Sweet Vidalia Onion and not shed a tear, or that many of the monuments in Washington D.C. are made from minerals from Georgia quarries and that 80% of America’s carpets are made in a town called Dalton. The state bird, state insect, state flower, state vegetable and a lot more are within the pages of this book.
The illustrations seem to have a different roll, depending on the subject that is discussed. For example, O is for Okefenokee Swamp and the illustration has a dark and murky appearance. Water lilies can be seen as well as alligators and they all blend well into the illustration. P is for Peach has a great deal of light flowing off the page. The glow of the peaches can be seen as well as the excitement of a bountiful harvest by the planter. The illustrations are present to highlight the topics being presented
Summary: This is a non-fiction book containing facts about the state of Georgia. It is also an alphabet book because each page focuses on a particular letter of the alphabet and explains a fact about the state of Georgia using the specific letter on the given page.
Activity: This book would be a great book for students to learn more about the state of Georgia. It would be very ideal for a social studies class where students were learning about the history of the state of Georgia. For an activity, I would pair students into groups of three or four and require the students to use this book to make a poster containing the most important and interesting facts about Georgia. Once the groups are done with their posters, they will present them to the class. Those students not presenting would take notes from their classmates’ presentations. Instead of the teacher lecturing the entire class and the students retaining information and facts, this activity lets the students take control of their own learning by picking out their own facts and presenting them to the class.
P is for Peach discusses different significant aspects of Georgia history such as the city of Atlanta for A and how it has great historical importance because of the establishment of the Coca Cola company, the creation of Cabbage Patch Dolls, and this is the state from which Jimmy Carter (one of the Presidents of the United States came from) as well as Martin Luther King. Furthermore, this book can be used with a social studies lesson in which students produce a list of questions and topics drawn from this book from which they would like to learn more about before being introduced into the history of Georgia. Students could also choose one topic and further delve into further research into it and then the class can make a booklet of their own with the same alphabetical topics but further elaborated upon topics.
P is for Peach is a great alphabet book. Each letter of the alphabet is associated with important history of Georgia. The sentence will take about the letter and something in Georgia's history that starts with that letter.
Classroom: I would use this book in my social studies classroom. When I begin to talk about Georgia and it's history I will start with this book. Throughout the whole unit I will refer back to the book and the references it makes. I will keep this book in my classroom throughout the year as well encase the students want to read more about their home state. I wish this book was around when I was in school.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I ended up learning way more than I ever imagined from an alphabet book. Within the middle of the pages is the short children's story. There is rhyming used to introduce the letters and each letter represents something historic about Georgia. Alongside is more detailed description of each event. The illustrations are very detailed, colorful and informative. It would definitely be something for children growing up in Georgia to connect to while learning the alphabet, incorporating pictures of things in their natural environment.

I recommend this book for social studies integration , because it is an informative and interactive book that describes and explains the state of Georgia using the letters in the alphabet. In addition, I believe that the rhyming portion will appeal to younger readers , and the expository position will appeal to older readers. The classroom teacher could allow the students to make their own Georgia classroom alphabet book as well, to tie in literacy.

This is a great alphabet book for Georgia lovers! Each letter of the alphabet is turned into a word that is related to a person/place/thing important to and in Georgia. Each page is full of information to tell the reader about the word given for each letter. (i.e. A is for Atlanta). Great for older students to read when learning about the state of Georgia.
This is a really cute ABC book, especially for teachers in Georgia to use. I will definitely have this book in my class. This is great to teach young children about the alphabet, but I might also use it to teach the older grades like 2nd and 3rd about the different regions in Georgia. The book also rhymes throughout so you could talk about rhyming as well. The illustrations are very colorful too!
Did you know that in Cleveland GA, at Babyland General Hospital, Cabbage Patch dolls are born every few minutes with a Dr in attendance? A lucky child in the room gets to name the "baby" and then they are up for adoption. There are so many places and things that I look up on the internet while reading this series. Trivia, anyone?
This ABC book is also non-fiction for facts based upon Georgia. For example, "G is for Girl Scouts. Our founder and leader was born here."
I would use this book in my upper-elementary classrooms, as some of the words are more complex. We would read it during a study over Georgia, and then the students would complete their own ABC books with words about Georgia that they know.

Good book. A creative way of teaching kids about our state's historical landmarks and the people who played an important role in our state's history (former President Jimmy Carter and Dr. Martin Luther King)
My third graders are learning their state's history and this was a fun little book to go right along with what they are learning. There were a few things I learned from it today! It's not a boring book either. The same author has about 19 books on other states as well.
I loved this alphabet book. It was all about Georgia. This would be a great book to use when teaching students different things about the state they live in. You could also have the students create their own alphabet book for Georgia.
This is a wonderful alphabet book about Georgia. The pictures are amazing. This can be very useful when teaching about the state of Georgia from the state tree and plant to the state bird. There is so much to learn about Georgia.
