Inside the Egyptian Museum with Zahi Hawass: Collector’s Edition

Rate this book
The Egyptian Museum houses the world’s greatest collection of Egyptian treasures and antiquities, tens of thousands of stunning and fascinating objects dating from the earliest Predynastic times right through to the Greek and Roman Periods. Visitors to this great storehouse may become easily overwhelmed by the vast number of objects on display. But here for the first time is the world’s best-known Egyptologist’s personal introduction to the unmissable highlights of the Museum—Zahi Hawass’s own selection of his favorite 200 exhibits. For each piece, he gives some background to its discovery and significance, and describes what it means for him in terms of the art or the history of ancient Egypt, and why it strikes a personal chord.

“Due to my love of the Egyptian Museum, I thought that it would be wonderful to write a guide to its treasures, and to talk about my favorite objects within.”—Zahi Hawass

The book is of good size, with tons of great pictures, including images of things I'd not seen before and my being an avid reader of history, this was a pleasant surprise. It took a few chapters in to realize that I could expand the smaller images to view larger galleries, so a bit of navigational confusion. Once I understood, that made the book even better. This book reads best on an iPad-sized screen or larger, due to the rich content. The price is completely affordable for a nicely-done detailed stroll through the Egyptian Museum. This is a must-buy book for anyone interested in ancient Egyptian history.

Zahi Hawass exceeded my exceptions tenfold, which is impressive as Hawass is one of if not the most brilliant people when it comes to knowledge of Ancient Egypt/Kemet and in regards to all of Egyptology. His documentaries never have failed to awe me, this book not only is a book of extremely impressive photographs, not by far. The book is organized in accord to time, starting with the Pre-Dynastic and Early Dynastic time frames. Included with the photographs are at times in depth educational writings, and this is what absolutely brings the photographs and book to life. Images from Ancient Egypt/Kemet with brief explanations would have proven 5 star worthy so long as the photographs were exceptional...making this book a 10 star book, at least. For some reason, I wasn't expecting the amount of information Hawass put into the details; there is no reason I should have been surprised for as I've noted, he is an exceptional specialist of Ancient Egypt and also holds a very important and delicate role today dealing with Ancient Egypt's antiquity and its preservation. His passion flows threw each page, giving you not only beautifully written informative knowledge...but also beautiful, authentic and passionate that which he, like I and perhaps you also, hold such a deep passion for: Ancient Egypt.
