An esteemed Harvard Medical School doctor who has developed relaxation methods designed to reduce stress and heal the body now applies those techniques to the seven health issues that most commonly affect PMS, infertility, difficult pregnancies, menopause, eating disorders, breast and gynecological cancers, and endometriosis/pelvic pain.
Dr. Domar has created an integrated program of mainstream therapies combined with mind-body relaxation techniques that works far better than either approach alone. Whether used to help women conceive, reduce both the physical and psychological symptoms of PMS, cut down on menopausal hot flashes, or improve self-esteem, Dr. Domar's methods are proven effective, and are now available to all women who want to use their minds to heal their bodies.
I would recommend this to anyone living with a chronic illness. I've read so many books on pain management. This book offered information that I didn't know.
I liked the matter-of-fact approach of the book. She introduces 'New Age' ideas in a way that makes them seem not-so-weird (of course, I kind of lean toward the 'New Age' in general, so maybe others won't feel that the ideas are not-so-weird). For example, when she talks about meditation and deep relaxation, she makes it feel like something that a normal person can do rather than something that is only for monks on mountaintops.
Well written, easy to understand, and backed up with research. I originally checked this out from the library a couple of years ago, then purchased it so that I can refer back to it over and over (and I do refer to it often).
Despite the lame title, I would recommend this to any woman dealing with any health issue - from PMS to cancer to a difficult pregnancy. The author is the department chair at Harvard of Women's and has extensively studied the mind-body connection. Basically: the effect stress on everything and fixing it for healing. This book is a bit old, but still awesome. Her more recent book is Dealing with infertility, which isn't about that at all, but rather dealing with the stress of conception. Both are excellent!
This is a fabulous book that I've used for years to help me stay on a reasonably even keel. Domar really makes the mind-body connection work without getting so voodoo like that you feel guilty for taking a tylenol.
