Andrew Cockburn is the Washington Editor of Harper's magazine and the author of many articles and books on national security, including the New York Times Editor's Choice Rumsfeld and The Threat, which destroyed the myth of Soviet military superiority underpinning the Cold War. He is a regular opinion contributor to the Los Angeles Times and has written for, among others, the New York Times, National Geographic and the London Review of Books.

ISRAEL UNMASKED

Andrew and Leslie Cockburns 1991 book on Israels relations with the C.I.A is still a valuable book with regard to the reality of the Israeli States involvement in the world at large.

It details a diverse range of issues from the arms deals to Iran which continued seamlessly from the Shah to the Ayatolah, Israeli involvement with the right wing dictatorships of Central America, its collaboration with apartheid era South Africa on weapons programmes (nuclear and conventional), its kidnapping and murder operations overseas aswell as spying and industrial espionage in the United States.

Even for the most hardened cynic of Israeli actions (based on a study of reality not prejudice) will be astonished at the sheer opportunism and sickening character of Israeli actions including arms sales and training to Columbian drug cartels. The nature of the Israeli Arms industry is curtly summed up in the statement of an industry executive bemoaning the "threat of peace" and the end of the murderous wars of Central America.

Other issues involve the Israelis contempt for the sovereignty of other nations - witness the ham fisted murder of a Norwegian waiter of Morrocan origins in front of his pregnant girlfriend and the abduction of the courageous Israeli whistle blower Vanunu from Italy.

There is no limit to the opportunism of the Israeli establishment, "Is it good for Israelis?" seems to be the only measure - morals, ethics are just not in the picture. Even their closest allies in the U.S. are treated with contempt from time to time for instance the Israelis had intelligence relating to the truck bombing of U.S. personnel in Lebanon in 1983 but didnt pass it on.

One looks forward to the day the Israelis are put in their place, ie. within the 1967 borders; perhaps then reparations can be made (and paid) to the victims of their vicious and violent actions.

This book should be essential to anyone interested in the real facts about Israels foreign and covert policies, it is well sourced and includes interesting interviews with many of the figures involved, though perhaps not the best read if you are not familiar with modern Middle Eastern history and Israeli relations with the U.S.

This critical history of Israel-US military and intelligence relations sometimes reads like a spy novel, making exciting what could otherwise be a dry topic. Decades after it was written, although much in the world has changed, the US-Israel alliance and it’s function remains essentially the same - a thuggish apartheid-loving proxy for America’s dirtiest jobs.

This is an occasionally tedious, yet readable history of U.S/Israel covert relations up to and including the first Iraq war. Tedious only because the Cockburns did such a thorough job in research.

Emphasized is Israel’s role in aiding the U.S. during the Cold War. Also highlighted is the involvement of both nations in the lucrative arms trade.

People and topics covered are many. They include Soviet aid to Israel early on, Nasser and Egypt, the 1956, 1967 and 1973 wars, Lavon Affair, James Jesus Angleton, Latin America military aid and drugs, Iran Hostage Crisis, Mordecai Vanunu, the Numec Affair (stolen uranium from a Pennsylvania processing plant), Iran Contra, Jonathan Pollard, Arnon Milchan, the first Iraq War and more.

Subjects which I would like to have seen covered, or expanded upon are: the USS Liberty incident is briefly mentioned (only 3 paragraphs), Israel’s Samson Option, and the religious/racial role in Israel’s motivations.

It’s worth noting that the authors refer to the necessity of knowledge of Hebrew sources, because much that is significant is never translated to English language sources. This is also mentioned in the illuminating works of Israel Shahak.

One can find a PBS Frontline special (1989) produced by the authors on this very topic and a C-SPAN interview of the authors (1991) by doing an internet search.

كتاب مليان فضايح كلها قديمة طبعا نظرا لان الكتاب عده عليك ٣٠ سنة. انما بيرصد نشأه اسرائيل و تحولها من الشرق الروسى للغرب الامريكى الى اعتماد امريكا بالكلية على اسرائيل و التغاضى عن كل ممارستهم من عدوان و مذابح و كذب و تجسس حتى على امريكا نفسها

یه کتاب بسیار عالی که روند نزدیک شدن اسرائیل و آمریکا رو به خوبی نشون میده و بالا و پایین شدن رابطه آن‌ها رو از اول شکل‌گیری اسراییل توضیح میده. چیزی که برای من جالب بود توضیح گستردگی نفوذ و رابطه اسراییل با قاره آفریقا و کشورهای آفریقایی بود که اوج این قضیه رو میشه در رابطه با آفریقای جنوبی دید که کتاب به خوبی این قضیه رو میشکافه. به صورت کامل علل و عمق نفوذ اسرائیل در آمریکای جنوبی رو هم توضیح می‌ده و نشون می‌ده که یک پایه مسائل آمریکای جنوبی درباره مواد مخدر و دیکتاتورها، به اسراییل برمی‌گرده. به مساله عراق، صدام، جنگ ایران و عراق، ماجرای مک‌فارلین هم می‌پردازه که به نظرم مسائل جدیدی رو باز می‌کنه. در مجموع حرف نویسنده رو در این کتاب میشه در دو نکته خلاصه کرد:۱- اساس اقتصاد اسراییل بر پایه سلاح بنا شده و صلح جهانی برای آن‌ها تهدید است ۲- آمریکا در جاهایی که نمی‌خواهد یا نمی‌تواند(به دلایل مختلف) مستقیما دخالت کند، کار را به اسرائیل می‌سپارد

نکات تکان دهنده ای داشت. از جمله این که:
+ اسرائیل برای مقابله با حمله احتمالی سوریه در جولان بمب های اتمی کوچکی کار گذاشته بود.
+ حمله عراق به کویت با چراغ سبز و به نوعی تشویق آمریکا صورت گرفت.
+ خیانت های ملک حسین و اطلاع دادن به اسرائیل از قصد اعراب برای حمله در اکتبر 1973
و ..
جالب ترین نکته هم این بود:
الزامات بنیانی بسیار مهمی وجود داشت که ایالات‌متحده را به طرف رویارویی نظامی در خلیج [فارس] می‌راند. صاحبان صنایع تسلیحاتی ورود جهان را به آستانه دوران صلح به‌مثابه «فاجعه» تلقی می کردند.یکی از مقامات پنتاگون طی گفتگویی با حسرت می گفت: «در آن‌جا هیچ‌کس نمی‌داند چه باید کرد. نیروی دریایی به کنگره رفته و سعی کرده در مورد این‌که نیروی دریایی هند در اقیانوس هند یک تهدید است صحبت کند. برخی دیگر در مورد تهدید کارتل‌های مواد مخدر کلمبیا حرف می‌زنند. اما نمی‌شود یک بودجه 300 میلیارد دلاری را با این ‌طور چیزها نگه‌داشت. فقط یک نقطه است که می‌توان آن را یک تهدید نمایاند: عراق.»
به لطف عملیات سپر صحرا، تهدید صلح و کاهش‌های متعاقب آن در بودجه نظامی به‌طرز قابل توجهی از بین رفته بود.
