Abbey must attend the Luminary’s Ball, a posh affair where a good impression with the Illuminary, head of all fantastic creatures, is crucial. But heading with Michael into her private meeting, arch-rival Lilith slips her a mickey that makes her act uncontrollably badly! Collects issues 21-24.
There's a big interdimensional party afoot, and Abbie asks Paris to accompany her. All's well... oh, okay, all is a shambles. It wouldn't be Boneyard if it weren't. But this is the volume we've all been waiting for, where much of the potential of Boneyard gets realized. The best of the series (so far, I hope). ****
This book, in my opinion, easily has the best art in the entire series. I believe this is due to the author finally taking his time to create a narrative flow without filling every space with action and dialogue. Instead, the comic takes it time to tell the story simply through sequential art, rather than spelling out the character's feelings in bold, neon letters. I'm a goddamn sucker for great black and white art that can give the sense of depth, water, dirt, oil, and so much more.
The story is really great in engaging other characters of the Boneyard who have more or less been ignored during its entire run. Hildy plays a bigger part other than 'overbearing mother figure who only pops up to give sage advice'.
I'm not a fan of characters revealing their love while under the influence. I find it lazy writing. Abbey's actions speak louder than her words, and it was already quite obvious Micheal and Abbey were in love with each other and both knew it too. It was nice to watch Micheal doing everything he can to keep Abbey's dignity while she ran around drunk as a weasel.
Overall, this was a fun moment in the series.

Abbey invites Paris to accompany her to the Illuminary’s Ball – this is a yearly gala where all of the supernatural beings must present themselves to the Illuminary for judgment. He gets to decide whether or not to revoke their licenses, so to speak. These creatures are supposed to be keeping a low profile – anyone who doesn’t follow the rules is in big trouble (Abbey refers to the Illuminary as judge and ‘executioner’). While they’re there, Lilith slips something in Abbey’s drink that effectively removes all of her inhibitions – not the kind of image they want to present. Paris gets in contact with Hildy who manages to knock Abbey out so that Ralph’s date can animate her. This so does not work. The Illuminary sees through their ruse, but seems to understand that things are well in hand. And Paris arranges some payback for Lilith. Everyone makes it back to the cemetery ok, but unfortunately, Abbey doesn’t remember anything that happened (she declared her undead love for Paris!). Oh the humanity…er, supernaturality?!
Boneyard is laugh-out-loud funny. I was a bit worried that after six volumes and a lack of Paris and Abby having made a move on the other, that it would get old. Then Glump the small demon did something funny and I was once again entertained. Anxiously awaiting the next volume. I don't even care if Abby and Paris don't get together or not anymore, I just hope they do something funny. Patton Oswalt did the introduction to this. We were sitting so close, he talked to us.
