You should have stayed on Mars, sweetheart.

The year is 2076. Earth is ruled by a one-world government. In order to maintain unity, all citizens must deny their national, racial, and religious identities—or suffer the consequences.

After a video of her act of insurrection goes viral, seventeen-year-old Philadelphia Smyrna and her family become the government’s most wanted. When she intercepts a radio transmission from her father asking for help, she knows she must find him before the government does. Adopting a fake identity, Philadelphia leaves the safety of Mars and returns to Earth. But the government isn’t the only one looking for her. When her former allies in the underground compromise her position, she realizes she’s become a pawn in a war—and both sides will sacrifice everything, including her family, to find her.

Fox Hunt is the fourth book in the RED RAIN series, a fast-paced Christian sci-fi adventure that’s perfect for fans of THE HUNGER GAMES and LEFT BEHIND.

Rachel Newhouse is an author, wife, secretary, and Sunday school teacher from Kansas City, Missouri. Her obsessions are sci-fi, dystopian, and kid lit. When she’s not writing, she’s cooking Asian food, growing chilis that are too spicy to eat, and watching wildly age-inappropriate shows like My Little Pony and Gravity Falls with her husband, Joe. She also really likes glitter. You’ve been warned.

It's a well-known fact I start side-eyeing books when a series begins to get longer than originally planned, but in this case, I'm here for all of them and I trust the author to keep my attention and nail the ending. 👏👏

This book feels like a nice lull, at least to begin with. It's all about Philly's continued growth and change as a person, with a nice side of extreme Nic character development. (I almost trust him now…) Speaking of which, the situation he finds himself in is absolutely hilarious, and I love seeing him so grumpy and disgruntled.

Philly, now Andromeda (which is a ridiculously cool name), was such an interesting picture of the pain, fear, and slight excitement of being your own person and being responsible for your own choices. I absolutely loved the inner war she was fighting the whole time, and her reliance on God continues to strengthen.

Okay, but those are some adorable and tragic new side characters. 👏

The end completely picks up and sends everything in a crazy (and somewhat terrifying) direction. I'm excited to see where it all goes next.

CW: description of tattoo parlors, mentions of cosmetic surgery including implied lewd body mods, implied swearing, danger, loss.

I’m a fan.

A great installment for this series. I love seeing Phil taking more decisive action (even when it’s the wrong action) instead of waiting for life to happen to her. So many emotional scenes in this book, and that cliffhanger is going to drive me nuts until I can read the next one. Also a fan of Phil’s new look.

I'm just not even sure what to think about this series anymore. I mean, part of me wants to continue reading and find out what happens, but part of me just feels like it's a more typical dystopian with the normal over-the-top teen drama.

With that said, one of the reasons I've enjoyed this series is that Newhouse thought through a lot of details. This series is well thought out and her world-building is amazing. She has real, flawed characters that are struggling with family, right and wrong, as well as the typical us-against-the-government.

Will I read the next book? I just don't know. I do want to know what happens next but I'm also disappointed that this series became so typical after a beginning that promised to be so different. We will just see. I can see this series might surprise me with the resolution, or it could continue being a typical dystopian just with a Christian flare.

The best yet. Well worth the wait.

Since relaunching her "author brand" last summer, Mrs. Newhouse released at least one entry, new or reissued, in the Red Rain series every month for what must have been at least four months ... long enough for us to get accustomed to that ambitious release cadence and come to unconsciously expect something new really soon every time we finished a story. And then, after Aurelius, she put that schedule on hold. Now, about three(?) months later, here's Book 4, and it's well worth the wait.

The narrative voice is yet again a different tone from anything we've seen from Mrs. Newhouse before, with the same "can't put it down" quality as usual, that keeps me hooked on this series despite it being a genre I generally can't stand. And this book combines elements similar to those that characterized the previous entries in the series, without feeling like any of them "all over again": Philadelphia Smyrna again takes an interplanetary journey on faith despite her confidants' better judgment (Red Rain), but this time the danger is ratcheted up from the start. We again see some madcap schemes from ex-villain "Dr. Nic", but unlike Prisoner 120518 such shenanigans do not dominate the story, and unlike Crook Q Philadelphia's perspective works well for everything and her choices drive the story. We again get new information about the background of characters we care about (Project 74, Andromeda, Aurelius), but this time it's mostly Philadelphia having to dig through Dr. Nic's past.

If you liked any of the previous entries in the series, Fox Hunt is like them all in what made them good, and yet completely new. In my opinion, it's the best entry in the series yet. I look forward to the rest of the series, which if her currently announced plan holds will come one a month(!) throughout 2023.

I received an advance copy of this book for no additional cost as a supporter on Mrs. Newhouse's Patreon.

Having randomly picked a book out of the series I was surprised at how easy the story was to follow. I liked Rachel's writing style and the characters she portrayed. I especially liked the relationship between the main character and the Vons, how Phil felt obliged to make them feel at ease, how she remained respectful even though their own daughter had given up on her forgetful parents. The story told felt exciting but at times I wished the pace was faster. I was too eager to see what awaited Phil around the corner.
Overall, it was an enjoyable read with both engaging characters and scenes.

Hoo boy. Yes, I did read twelve books in three days (lost the race by a few hours, though), so now I'm stuck trying to remember exactly what happened in each episode of this escalating saga...

I so appreciated Phil's willingness to do and risk anything for the people she loves; it's such an admirable trait. Although sometimes it gets terribly hard to tell whether the real issue is that she isn't listening to other people (*cough* Nic) or that other people (*cough* also Nic) aren't listening to her. The Vons just about broke my heart (and also made me smile sometimes, but still broke my heart). I was glad that the secret from Aurelius finally came out...although not exactly in the way I wanted it to. (: That's about all I remember from this book specifically, except for the ramping up of tension and danger and not being sure exactly who to trust, but it certainly made it easy to keep the series going! (Actually, I'm not entirely sure how much I could have slowed down if I hadn't been racing.) :D Onward! (To the next review, even if not exactly the next book.)

Rooting for the bad guy? Who, me?

Like all the other books and novellas in the Red Rain series, this one never lets up on the snark and clever dialogue. Only now its turbo charged in the character of Nic. I enjoyed his personality more than that of any other villain that I can think of, and the pathos in this book shoots up higher than in the previous. The author's writing is clear, easy to read, and the characters are vivid. If you've read the other books in this series, you're already hooked. You may as well dive into the murk of Nic's head and chuckle with the rest of us.
