"Ghouls can't feel pain. Maybe there was once a time when he could feel things like fear or hate. But the woman who raised him killed that part of him..."
A story about a hidden ghoul hybrid.
Things are just starting yet it's on with a bang!
The manga is so good. I love the artstyle and the dialogue presentation. My eyes are blessed!
I like how funny the characters are except for our mixed hybrid, Kabane. I know his character will blossom soon enough and that's what I am waiting for.
Inugami, the detective, is going to be one of my most favourite fictional adult characters. He is just charming, sarcastic (love it!), realistic and quite the charm. That hair?! Don't ask me.
But I love Shiki. He's so damn dramatic and chaotic. The funny look he has got me so interested in this character.
And talking of dramatic, let's not talk about Akira.
A detective named Inugami is brought in from Tokyo to solve a series of rural livestock slayings. He comes across Dorotabo, a peculiar boy stuck working the fields. The two of them turn out to share a rather peculiar link, one that will change Dorotabo’s life forever…
If a manga ever thrived on its first impressions, it’s this one, which takes abuse and neglect and the supernatural and rolls them up in a small town mystery where the city boy rolls in and has all the answers. Maybe.
Dorotabo makes for a puzzling cipher, a boy who is apparently not in school, spends his time in the fields, and has very little emotion. Yet something about him catches Inugami’s eye and we quickly learn that the youth is much sharper than anybody suspects.
Bundled up with the family dynamic, including one of the most effectively obnoxious brats I’ve seen in ages, and a descent from the mundane to the horrific that’s quite well done and you have the makings of a classic, especially when Inugami’s true, tragic, purpose is revealed.
Which is why it’s a darn shame it can’t hold onto that feeling. Dorotabo’s not exactly normal and that thrusts him into near-shonen territory that isn’t bad at all, but definitely isn’t the rife promise of the initial act. Throw in your secret this and that and special child stuff and it’s any number of similar titles.
Not that it’s a loss, as I said; as horror manga go it’s pretty enjoyable, with some especially gruesome visuals at times to hammer home the (un)nature of things. Dorotabo is only half human, and the half that isn’t gives him an otherworldly, definitely ‘inhuman’ air that is portrayed effectively.
But it’s at war with things like Inugami’s true self and his design, which get the point across but aren’t nearly as effective. And Dorotabo’s skeleton outfit might be distinct but it’s perhaps a smidgen on the nose at the same time.
The second case they find themselves on is interesting, but holding back critical information until the end as if it’s a big reveal doesn’t achieve much of anything and it lacks the presentation of the beginning case, frankly, minus some ick factor.
We also get the home situation, which includes the traditional ‘you’re new and I’m great and you suck’ boy who dislikes Dorotabo from the off and will no doubt come around on him in due course. Some of this is okay - watching him get thwarted at his scheming is amusing and emphasizes how strange Dorotabo is - but it’s definitely an archetype.
The other youth is a young boy who dresses and acts like a girl, which is an interesting path to take, although the story is nebulous enough that I could believe it isn’t quite true just yet. They’re the nice one, even if Dorotabo doesn’t make the best first impression.
Throw in the promise of more Japanese folklore to come, we’ve clearly got some spirits in the mix next volume, and you get a pretty nice little stew that could use a few more unique notes of seasoning, but isn’t bad, especially if you like this sort of story.
3.5 stars - I think we’ll let this lie at 3 for now, but if you like the sound of this at all, you could probably nudge it to 4 because it’s really on the bubble for me. It’s a strong start that I want to see stay strong before I start to really endorse it, but it’s worth a look and a second volume in my books.
I wasn't expecting to like Kemono Jihen very much. I didn't like the art style of the cover. I thought the design itself was okay, but the style looked a bit messy. Also, I didn't like the thin linework - is that the right word? I prefer it to be thicker.
In my opinion, though, the art style of the actual book isn't consistent with the art style of the cover. And since I didn't like the style of the cover, this is a good thing.
Admittedly, the art of the book is often rather simple, but I find it quite charming and enjoyable. I don't want this to come across the wrong way, but it reminds me of sketchbook doodles. Unlike doodling, though, the art isn't messy. It just isn't overly detailed. It's good.
Furthermore, the story contains more emotion than I thought. I was expecting this to be a shallow, action-heavy story. That assumption was entirely unfair. I genuinely feel bad about it. I mean, sure, action is a large part of the story, but there's also sadness and guilt and jealousy and other complex emotions. I'll gladly continue reading Kemono Jihen.
Interestingly, this is the second manga series I've consecutively started which involves a supernatural detective agency - the other is Bungo Stray Dogs. Both of these series involve a new recruit who feels guilty about a recent supernatural event. (I'm pretty that doesn't spoil anything past the first chapter of each respective series.)
Also, the novel I just finished - Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children - contains a group of supernatural people as well, although they aren't exactly detectives. This is a strange coincidence. We'll need Inugami and Dazai on the case.
Kemono Jihen has one of the more promising starts to a current gen manga I've read. Reminds me a lot of Bungo Stray Dogs. It has a very small, focused cast. I think that there's a lot of potential for every character to get a lot of development considering how few characters there are right now. The vibe is good, the cast is good, I'm all in.
This manga started as an odd beast and ended as one. Early on, I wondered what time period this is in. The boy Dorotabo wears pretty old clothes and uses only simple tools for big rice fields. And his aunt also wears very old clothes and the inn seems to have no modern things, not even the truck. But the shown calendar says June 2016. Did the stone suppress Dobotaro's kemono side? And why was Yataro reacting this severely to Inugami's preferential treatment of Dobotaro? He seems almost possessed. And inugami is a bakedanuki and Dobotaro a half ghul... ok... and the ghuls sown here are half-rotten animals, so what woman would fuck that? And how can Dobotaro fight this well? So Dorotabo wanted to be killed and Inugami simply did not? And as for Dorotabo's aunt, sure technically Inugami did what he was told because she said "do what you want with him" but why did she want her nephew killed? Because she suspected he was the killer? Why? And what is it with Dobotaro being so cold? That doesn't make him strong as Inugami claimed but rather creepy and possibly dangerous. Dorotabo is so creepy. Doesn't he feel any pain? He even ripped off his arm, totally casually, to get out of Shiki's trap. If he always acted like this, he must have been a nightmare for his aunt and cousin. Who acts this way and how did he even know his arm would grow back? Shiki, the living bomb, is more relatable than this guy. And while this does show some promise, the extreme reactions of people together with Dorotabo's lack of emotions creeps me out too much to continue. After all, this is not supposed to be a horror story.
When livestock start turning up dead under mysterious circumstances in a rural town outside of Tokyo, Inugami is called.
He’s a detective for an agency investigating the occult. Mononoke and other creatures or ghouls are his typical targets.
Imagine his surprise when he encounters a fellow half-kemono in the village.
Known as “Dorotabo” by the village for always being covered in mud, he works the land of his aunt and cousin’s inn. He was abandoned as a baby in his aunt’s care.
Inugami doesn’t believe that’s entirely the case.
An abandoned baby wouldn’t have been left with a life stone braided on a chain around his neck like he was.
Hearing this is the first time in a while Dorotabo had felt like himself, like Kabane—his actual name.
Inugami quickly surmises that Kabane isn’t the culprit for the odd happenings in town but he may be able to help with finding who is.
More, Inugami promises to help Kabane find out what happened to his parents if he helps with the case.
This is is such an unexpected find!
I am absolutely so taken with the concept for this series! The premise is familiar enough but also entertaining and unique with its own quirks.
Kabane is such a refreshing protagonist in how he is introduced as well as in how his character unfolds. I love how subdued he is. Again, it’s unexpected.
I feel like this series melds a lot of the most enjoyable elements of series like Bungo Stray Dogs, In/spectre, and, even, a little MHA.
I definitely recommend this one, especially for fans of supernatural stories and found family stories~
I'm always a sucker for a good yokai story, and the mangaka even integrated Western fairytale and folklore into the plot. The main character being a somewhat immortal half-ghoul child, who is left in Japan, trying to find his parents while learning how to be human, is extremely likeable to me. The story mainly focuses on supernatural creatures assimilating themselves into human society while also having a power struggle among themselves. The artstyle is beautiful and each character has their own flaws and objectives. In fact, even the antagonists have their own philosophy and morality. I also love the idea of how although some creatures are of the same faction and serving under the same master, they do not have similar abilities. A very creative story with stunningly drawn out battle scenes.
an amazingly charming, amazingly enticing shounen series. it does not start out as the most original story out there but it feels quite refreshing regardless. it is sympathetic to its characters - who are, for the most part, a couple of barely teenagers who have been through some pretty horrific and traumatising events - and this warms my heart.
if you are looking for an easy but charming shounen, i could not recommend this enough.
the series, however, comes with a tw for rape; it is something that minors witness but i felt the series deals with this and how it has affected the characters appropriately.
This manga is action-packed with supernatural characters. Our main character, Kabane, is half-ghoul and is left with his aunt, who hates him. She torments him and abuses him until a Detective Inugami comes per the wishes of the Aunt. Inugami decides to take Kabane to the city with him. Hiring Kabane as part of an agency that investigates supernatural activities and missions. Kabane is meeting new people, solving cases, and understanding himself along the way.
I first read this manga back in 2019 and decided to reread it after binge-watching the anime. Kabane may be odd due to how he was raised but he seems like a sweetheart. I already love his dynamic with Inugami and the other two kids. I’m very excited to see what adventures he gets into now that he’s at The Inugami Detective Office.
I really liked this manga and the main characters personality was really interesting, he is emotionless but also childlike in his hope to find his parents simultaneously. He sort of reminds me of Shoto from my hero academia.
A series I read online a few years back finally got a physical release! So I'm reliving it! I can vaugly remember it so it's almost like doing it anew!!!
Here from the anime which was about a year ago so I’m late but 🥺 I always wanted to know what happened when it ended so here I am. Anyways Kabane works for Inugami and meets Shiki and Akira!
Just finished the anime and I liked it so I decided to give the manga a go too. This first volume was mostly introductory to the characters and the setting, let’s see how it goes from now on.
