Dr Abboud has provided a fascinating in-depth study of Surat Maryam (Q19) and the first part of Surat Al Imran (Q3:1-63), focussed, as the title indicates, on the role of Maryam in the Qur'an. I found her literary (form, stylistic, and narrative) analyses of Surat Maryam, which are supported by a complete transliteration of the sura, to be particularly interesting, although I remain unconvinced by her argument that the polemical portion of Q19 (other than the inserted Medinan verses Q19: 34-40) is directed against Jews and Christians as well as the Meccan polytheists - the latter group seems to me to be the only target of the Meccan polemics. Her literary analyses of Surat Al Imran are interesting but not quite as deep. Sadly, the book could have benefitted from a keen editorial eye as there are numerous spelling and word choice errors, and the assignment of verses to the five narrative sections of Q19 is inconsistent across Chapters 2 and 3. Still, this is a very interesting and insightful study.
