Got Gas? is a showcase of photographs of central Pennsylvania service stations from local collector Jimmy Rosen, owner of the Old Sled Works in Duncannon, PA. Handpicked from a myriad of images from the 1920s through 1960s, the photographs in Got Gas? display the varied aesthetic of 20th-century roadside architectural design. "Jimmy's beautiful book takes us on an armchair odyssey, a gas station vacation on every page." - Brian Butko, Lincoln Highway and pop culture author "The book that gives you gas!" - Tom Russell, Meteorologist, CBS 21 News, Harrisburg
This is a coffee table book and photographic glimpse through history at a piece of daily life from the past generations: the friendly gas stations and service centers of Pennsylvania. Funny how such an overlooked subject can be brought to life through the photographs and sweet vignettes of yesteryear, flooding the reader with a deep sense of nostalgia. If you are from the area of Harrisburg, especially, you will see names and places and read stories in this book that you probably remember. Even I, living a distance away, was surprised to discover pictures in these pages of two people I know personally.
Perhaps my favorite part of the book was the then-and-now pictures depicting the changes that occurred at several of the gas stations over the decades. Some became houses, some restaurants, others just disappeared. It was quite interesting to see the side-by-side comparisons through history.
I heartily recommend reading this book, and if you're interested in it, I can help you get a signed copy from the author himself. It was such a fantastic work, and I give it five stars. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Coffee table book filled with photos of vintage gas stations in central PA. I recommend for fans of history, gas stations, americana, and "lost places." You definitely don't need to be from Pennsylvania to enjoy this book.
