Apo, who lives in the Philippines, was called by her handicapped veteran son in America to come and live with him and his wife. Upon arriving in America, she finds herself in a quest to save her son from himself and his marriage. Seeing the hopelessness in her quest, she vows to do whatever she can for him, even to the point of sacrificing going back home to her beloved country. Jeg and his family are later called by Apo’s son to come and live with them. Jeg, an energetic and imaginative young boy, is excited to see America and to be reunited with his grandmother. He later finds that America is not what he fantasized it to be. Their life in America is a constant struggle that in later years will result in Jeg trying to help his grandmother return to her homeland before it is too late.
