"THIS FEELING WELLING UP INSIDE ME. WHAT IS IT CALLED?"
After a tumultuous trial period, Yoi and Ichimura-sempai finally pour their hearts out at the summer festival, and the two officially start going out. It’s uncharted waters now for both teenagers, and while Yoi insists on keeping things at a measured pace, Ichimura-sempai is about ready to dive in headfirst. With school out for the summer, it’ll be Yoi’s first time being in a relationship during a long break, and her boyfriend suggests…a trip to Kobe?!
Mika Yamamori is someone you come back to again and again and again, seeking for comfort and sacharine sweet days of young love. I swear, reading this puts a smile on my lips. I love how Yoi and Ichi are slowly maturing for love. Also, the events in Kobe are making me squeal! Such progress, I'm so happy right now.
This was such a CUTE volume! One of the best in the series since the first volume of In the Clear Moonlit Dusk. This had me kicking my little feet and squealing. It was so wholesome and adorable. I love following Yoi and seeing her develop more confidence in her body and her identity. This romance is so pure and I'm gonna need Mika Yamamori to let this dumb love triangle subplot go. We don't want it or need it. Thanks, let's leave those corny ass love triangles in the 2010s shojo manga and not in the 2020s shojo manga.
"It's as if he's tickling my heart" They're so in love! They don't know it though, because they're both dorks. ♥ I didn't expect to love it this much, so sweet and heartwarming.
Lei mi lascia basita a ogni volume. Per me è eccessivo. I disegni mi piacciono davvero tanto.
Summer break can only mean one thing! Or not, as Ichimura’s big idea is to hit up Kobe with Yoi for a little alone time. So all their friends come along instead. But proximity might be enough to get Yoi out of her shell, and it goes without saying that Stranger Things have happened…
Credit where it is due, this is easily and without effort the best volume of this manga that I have yet read. I dunno what changed or if I just gave up and accepted what we have here (which I doubt because the next volume preview set my teeth on edge), but it’s very enjoyable.
It might partly be because we do see that Yoi is, despite being thought of as an amazing cool person, incredibly low on self-esteem. I don’t recall it being stated so explicitly prior to this point, but it really helps explain just why she wants to be seen as more of a girl and her family situation gets into that too. It makes her waffling make a lot more sense.
And Ichimura’s not just a prettyboy, though lord knows he’s that, and I like how casual he is about his money. It’s not that he’s snooty, he just doesn’t blink twice at the life he leads. It makes for some very funny clash of culture moments. But it’s also hiding a complicated family situation and somebody who doesn’t seem to know how to take a serious relationship seriously, but wants to. Fleshing him out in particular is a good thing.
The plot of this one is straight from the manga playbook - go to a place and indulge in the local culture while drawing some photorealistic backgrounds and insert your characters as you go. I can take or leave these, but I generally find them fun and this one has a good time throwing together a bunch of kids on vacation.
What sets this apart is the continuing development between our leads and how elegantly the story captures the fun of just hanging out. Seeing everybody just lounging around watching Stranger Things and goofing off is super enjoyable and cuts the romantic tension nicely.
Not to say the tension isn’t good, as this also captures the problem of hanging out with all your friends when two of you are dating and want to maybe get a little alone time to talk about stuff or just flirt or… yeah.
It really adds an extra layer and I do like Yoi’s discussion of what she wants and Ichimura’s revelation of a more vulnerable side. It’s like they’re connecting as people and finally revealing themselves to one another in subtle ways. Yoi’s self-conscious earring selection is a fantastic little touch.
So they manage to get a little date and if you think that means an aquarium, then you know your manga. This one is smartly presented as a series of frames and I love the way the mangaka uses that to at least give it a little pop compared to the norm.
Yeah, it’s solid. I’m not rushing to read the first three again, but I do think the chemistry between our leads is amped up by them wanting to be together and having friends constantly, if unintentionally, get in the way. And by them actually showing themselves to one another.
We’ll see if it lasts - I thought we were going to get around the rival storyline, as Yoi makes it quite clear to our wannabe that she’s dating Ichimura, but the next volume preview suggests a futility of effort or something. Which is a bummer, I really liked him more than Ichimura, but read the room, dude.
4 stars - it’s a mighty strong volume and, as I said, easily the best that we’ve seen from the series to date. No major complaints here; it’s just a good time watching teenagers have a good time.
This volume, much like all its predecessors, focuses on the advancement of the protagonist’s relationship and the exploration of their personalities. So, if you came here looking for a plot, you will be sorely disappointed because it is barely there.
However, there are quite a few quiet moments of sweet romance and self-reflection between the two protagonists to tide you over, although it doesn’t quite make up for the lack of plot.
The summer trip felt akin to a school trip storyline as the protagonists brought their friends along which led to some funny bonding scenes. The chance to see the characters outside of the school environment and in regular clothes was refreshing and different. The art, as always, was a beautiful feast for the eyes.
Okay this volume was cute and all, but why is no one mentioning how fugly her dress was? Like seriously, she is so lovely and the mangaka drew her in a tent 😭
This volume covers the summer vacation trip to Kobe as a gang! All 6 of them stayed over at Kohaku's villa. However, we still manage to get some tender moments between Yoi & Kohaku.
Kohaku's love language seems to be Physical Touch & given how this is Yoi's first relationship, I feel that the author realistically depicted how Yoi and Kohaku's relationship would develop.
This is a very sweet and charming volume. The two are in the beginning of their relationship, and the way they are falling for the other feels organic and realistic.
