Super basic stuff, I expected more.

The only useful thing I got from this book is the calculation of the best time to do spells.

I didn't like the spell sections. They are clearly divided according to the corresponding planet but most of them i don't consider useful at all, some other are very obscure, and most of them use materials and tools which purpose or correspondences are not explained.

Not good for beginners nor advanced people.

There are tons of useful spells in this book that any practitioner could take advantage of. There are quite a few highly dramatic spells that I won’t personally be using or recommending, but the useful information greatly outweighs the drama. I highly recommend this book to serious practitioners.

As it says on the tin: this is a book of spells and rituals to perform under the auspice of the planets.

The spells strike me as Hermetic or Thelemic in nature, and they require a chunk of herbs and crystals to make work. Raven says in the intro that you can substitute as you like, but that requires knowledge of correspondences--which puts this book's audience in an odd spot: It's great for either experienced casters who can work their substitutions OR for beginners with ample access to ingredients, because experienced casters who have all those ingredients hanging around are probably mostly writing their own spells anyway.

I do like the spells though. They're pretty universally practical, like a spell to boost your divination, or to give someone a message without actually having to _tell_ them. I also enjoyed the planetary correspondence aspect--they either made all the sense (divination is a moon spell) or gave me new inspiration (exorcism as a moon spell, what now). I'm definitely on #TeamSubstitute but the spells give me enough to make it work.

The only thing I'd like to see explained more indepth is the sigils. Some are fairly obvious, like the eye-atop-a-tower for the divination spell. There were also some that I couldn't figure out, which means I can neither substitute/personalize, nor properly imbue with intent 'cause I'm not sure what they're evoking.

Recommend for: People who enjoy Hermetic rituals and have a pantry full of ingredients, or people looking for inspiration and are willing to do the legwork to adapt/substitute as needed.

Planetary Spells & Rituals was published in 2010, and one of the first books that formed my early Pagan journey alongside Crowley, LaVey, Buckland and Cunningham.

Magick Without Tears by Aleister Crowley Satan Speaks! by Anton Szandor LaVey Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft by Raymond Buckland Cunningham's Book of Shadows The Path of An American Traditionalist by Scott Cunningham

Planetary Spells & Rituals is organized like you’d expect from a traditional, perhaps old-time grimoire.

Each chapter explores a different planet, and outlines the color, day, number and zodiac sign associated with the planet. It’s filled with various rituals, spells and charms (for Mending Quarrels or Winning a Legal Dispute).

There are special notes on emergency magickal workings (that might fall outside of planetary cycles), and encouragement to make the rituals your own. Nothing is set in stone, but provides guidelines you are allowed to fine-tune to your own specifications or flavor.

Much valued, it begins appropriately with an explanation of how magick works. It’s a refreshing take that reminds you: do a spell for job-seeking, but also remember to fill in some job applications. Magick is our reaction to the universe, and ritual is introspective before anything else. However, magick has to combine with action.

It’s rich with information that you’d have to find in 100 other books if you had to compile it by yourself. Simply, it’s one of the most extensive volumes you will ever read on the topic of planetary work and easily be compulsory coursework at any witches’ academy.

I really appreciated how this book encouraged adjusting and changing the spells as needed. Reading through it with this lense made me think about the spells more thoroughly as I did the mental exercise of figuring out what could work for me.

Like Raven said, good place to start and should give you some ideas, but it would be stupid to do spells from here by the book.
