"Apakah Tuhan menjalankan saluran belanja via telepon? Pikir Charlotte"

Kondisi Petula segera menyebar keseantero kota.

Kisah selanjutnya sungguh mendebarkan hati, segan rasanya bercerita.

Two words to describe this book: SUPERFICIAL and BORING.

Okay, I'm not usually a bitch to books. I generally favor what I read, regardless if the heroine is stupid or the plot is senseless as long as i get enjoyment from guilty pleasures and books i forced myself to read. In other words, I AM mostly nice even if i insult the main characters.

Sadly, this book failed to captured my attention AND my respect.

*shakes head* now where do i start. The amount of FAIL that this book gets from me is IMMENSE. Please, read at your own risk because of spoilers and bad language.

We start where Charlotte is living in peace, or so we're told, in a call center of the dead (weird) where she gets to help troubled teens, kinda like their good conscience. And Charlotte, being a bitch she was, refused to do work since, hey, these aren't her problems.
Meanwhile Scarlet is going by what she always do. Except she have a hot boyfriend and a less-antagonistic sister, Petunia, who she somehow had an unspoken truce to.

I couldn't get through this. I'm sorry. I can't. I barely even skimmed it, just to see if something good or exciting will come up. But it just keeps going down on my opinion. Nothing more than a pile of shit put together as an excuse for a book.
The characters are all... archetypal. You see, there's Charlotte. The unpopular geek who strives to be popular and sorta-gets what she wants in the end. She' selfish, self-absorbed and wannabe little slut who lusts after the another typical popular 'hot' jock Damen Dylan (oh the irony of the name, who tries to get him even if she is DEAD (i'm sorry, you heard that right? she's so desperate she pursues him when she died)and at the first book must seek help from gothic anti-social Scarlet (another stereotype). The two Wendys are one of the most pathetic and shallow characters i have ever, EVER read about. Fuck, they're so shallow that every single character describe them as that. Well, i see what the author wants to go with this. She wants to make them actually superficial to the core that it isn't a pretentious skin to hide something. However, my dear, it backfired alot. That just made them add to my list of archetypes here as 'the queen bee's sidekicks'. Oh, yeah, Ms. Author, no matter how much time you want to prove to me Scarlet is different, she never, ever, changed from the gothic outcast she was supposed to characterized as. The little bitch, for me, did nothing but to whine about her oh-so-hot bf and not much for her comatose sister.

Seriously, this book's plot is senseless. I wanna laugh at the ridiculousness of Petunia's disease. Really, Ms. Author, infection from a bad manicure? Like she was trying to be ironic and funny at the same time. Wrong move, Ms. Hurley, wrong move. Just a book filled with Scarlet and Charlotte's whining. I thought my head's going to pop.

I got a headache and Boredom syndrome in here (allow me to elaborate: my Boredom syndome is the namesake; it is the time when i am so bored to tears that i find something, ANYTHING to do just to not read this) I wasn't motivated enough to this shit that i barely got past page 70.

What the fuck! Never guessed it! (sarcasm) Ms. Author also fails at hiding who was the mystery villain, since her actions are suspicious enough early. Crap, can't even Charlotte guessed that?

This is just a shit-ton worth of migraines, eye-rolls and gag-fests. Please, I wouldn't ever recommend it, but read this at your own risk to find out yourself.

I really wanna rant more about this. But this is what my guts had to spew for now. More to come.

Homecoming

The supposed “twist” near the end reminded me of Scooby Doo. While this book was slightly better than the first, it’s almost as if Hurley can’t figure out what kind of author she’d like to be, what kind of books she’d like to write. Her writing style and characters have changed so much, the first book is only needed for background info on the characters.

It’s more like her writing shouldn’t be published, so much as exist in a High School English class. The ending in this one is almost more cliché and Disney like than the last. Her books offer cliché after cliché, from her characters to her story lines to her endings. All the pop culture references really reflect Hurley’s history of producing for T.V. However, T.V. is not like books, books require a little more depth, characters people can relate to but with characteristics that set them apart from others, and an original story line; sadly, these things are seriously missing from her books. The little bits of “wisdom” spread throughout the book sound like she got them off Hallmark cards, yet another side effect of producing for television.

I’m pretty certain her independent films are just as shallow and cliché as her books are.

This was awful. I could not even finish it. The first was okay-at least it had SOME plot line-it kept me reading to find out if she got the guy (she didn't). The interesting cover is not enough to keep me reading, and really, the cover is the only thing this book has going for it. I hate the feeling of forcing myself to read something and since I had to do that here-I quit. The writing and story was juvenile, even if some of the topics were not. 50 pages in I am left wondering where this was going: Charlotte's friends are ignoring her-oh wait-no they aren't. Oh yes, they actually were. Whatever. And the answering phone calls thing was boring because nothing had happened with that. So, overall, I'll be passing on any future pieces of "literature" Tonya Hurley writes.

At the end of the first book I wondered if their was going to be a sequel and a few months latter I happily learned that their was another book coming out, the plot centers around the all important high school event of Homecoming, turns out Petulia had flunked her senior year in order to try to win Homecoming queen this year, her now senior year sister Scarlet is having a long distance relationship with college age Damen, both are ripped into a situation when Petulia mystreiously enters a coma, but meanwhile Charlolet is having a unhappy time in a mudane after life where she has to intern at a teen help line where she never gets any calls, her friends are being pushed aside by the sly new girl Maddy who is controlling her life.

*Spoliers start here*

Soon Petuila finds her self in a ghost wating room with a dying pagent girl, Scarlet enters a medatation-like state to find Charlolet and is sent to the same dead ed class charolet used to go to, only this time its filled with new faces such as green gary a eco loving teenager who crashed his smart car into the side of a target, eventually the two meet up and have to battle Maddy for control of Petulas body, though they leave it open, will Maddy come back for revenge, what are Charolets parents like, and is their more to this boring after life than we know, cant wait to here these anwsers in Ghostgirl: In love.

Charlotte Usher finds out that 'graduating' in the afterlife isn't what it's cracked up to be. She ends up in a phone room, waiting for a teen to call for help. Except no one calls.

Then tragedy hits Hawthorne High's most popular girl Petula. Her sister Scarlet, tries to help. Charlotte is the answer. But will Scarlet be able to get to her in time to save both of them?

This is the sequel to GHOSTGIRL. This fast-paced novel kept me turning the pages wanting to see what Scarlet's answer to helping her vain sister would include beside trying to reach Charlotte, who is very much dead. Pop references are woven throughout. If you enjoyed GHOSTGIRL, this book won't disappoint. I do like how the author gave more dimension to Petula and didn't leave her as the cliche shallow popular girl. Also a new character will have you guessing on what her 'true' intentions are.

I admit I really like the series. I know I'm completely out if the age range, but I don't care. Seeing Charlotte again was nice, and knowing that even though she matured and did the right thing back in book one, that doesn't mean she has suffered a complete transformation. She is still insecure and full of doubts, and I understand her very well. One doesn't grow out of insecurities in months or a year. It takes a whole life of working through your self esteem and eventually growing up and changing environments. So, for the sake of the story, I don't mind if Charlotte can never quite completely shake her insecurities away, or completely mature. After all, as is mentioned during the book, she will be forever a seventeen year old, and all the emotions and feelings that come with the age will never truly leave her. Kinda tragic. She'll be forever young, but forever a teenager.
I liked Scarlet, she hasn't changed much, but she has entered that stage when girls worry about their boyfriends and the relstionship, which shows us another facet of Scarlet, one that was interesting to discover. Damen didn't change much, it was nice to know he was not a douche as many boys are at that age. And the most surprising thing was Petula. She started the same, but that near death experience certainly made her recapacitate her life choices a little, and while I don't expect huge changes from her, I know she is capable of doing things differently and to actually care and make a connection with others. And deep down, she carries her own insecurities, but deals differently with them.
Maddy was the interesting character in the story, I knew she was up to something since I first laid eyes on her, I just wasn't expecting her to be that evil, so that was great. It's interesting to read about the characters and see how they move along their life as Charlotte remains the same, and I can't wait to start the next one.

I have to admit, I was hoping for more in this second book, but felt a bit disappointed.
The plot was interesting, but then it had me scratching my head at different points. I didn't really feel connected to the characters and I really wanted to. I love the theme, the artwork and the gothic ghostly appeal, but it just fell a little flat for me.
The afterlife kinda blows for Charlotte and although the idea of what the dead characters do in ways of helping the living is a cool idea, it bugged me how Charlotte ended up at a low point, so to say as I don't want to give any spoilers away.
Scarlett grabbed my attention in the 1st book and I was hoping to get to know her more and was happy to see her character in this second book. But, although we see what she's willing to do to save her sister, I didn't feel as though I got any connection or a better knowing from the character.
Damen is a genuine character as I like his good heart, but then again, I was put off when he decided to choose a certain action with Petula for Homecoming. I didn't really like that part, but I do see the author's view on what Damen was doing and why, but it still felt unnecessary.
I never liked Petula's character and I'm sure everyone who's read the books would agree, lol, she's not so nice, but I did like the scene with Virginia the little girl which brought out a more heartfelt human side of her.
All in all, I didn't not like this book, I just didn't love it. I am planning to read the 3rd book to see where the characters end up as you never know with a book series, some books you enjoy better than the other and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a good next read.

Me encantó mucho

Y otra vez volví a agitarme interiormente. ¡Tonya, ¡¿qué has hecho?!

¡No estás sola!

Update 08/27/2014

Rating: 1.5/5 stars

If you'd like to see this review on my blog.

Homecoming is the second book of the Ghostgirl series, starting right where the first book left off. It tells the story of Charlotte after she and her classmates graduate from deadthology class. But crossing the threshold isn't as great as Charlotte imagined.

This second installment in the Ghostgirl series was as much a disappointment as Ghostgirl was. As full as potential as bad plot development.

The characters continue to be as annoying as they were before. The plot still lacks credibility and congruence. The same tie-knotted finale that doesn't match the hundreds of problems made. The narrator still tells you what character development should tell you and, again, it lacks any.

And probably my major problem with it is that, when you write a second book, you're supposed to learn about it and make improvements. In this book, there were no improvements made, if anything is seemed worse.

In this book starts one of my major pet peeves in books, besides insta-love (btw, this book has it, not a bad case, but still present) and love triangles (again, kind of has it, but not really). I'm talking about those friendship made out of nowhere. I'm talking about those bad thoughts toward someone you've just made. I'm talking about forming ideas out of nowhere that don't have to be. I'm talking about credibility in characters. I'll explain.

Charlotte and Scarlet so surely affirm that they are the best friends forever in the world. And they even feel like if they missed a part of themselves. When in the reality, they never shared much about themselves, enough for making a "best friend" kind-of friendship. For most of the first book they were fighting and "backstabbing" each other and they never addressed this. or said sorry for it. They never really helped each other that much. So it's really hard for me to believe that they are the best friends in the world. But that's just me.

Another thing that bothered me about this book is the fact that the author changed so much things, like if we weren't going to notice. Like she changed characters completely, changed some details. It felt like it was another book from a different series but with the same characters and starting just where the other book left off. But they're not together. There's a discrepancy of what was set in the first book with what was said in the second book.

A lot of the decisions made in this book where completely incoherent. And then the whole Maddy thing felt like it was there because no better idea came at the moment, and then the rest of the things will be driven by it.

Reading this book was tiring really and I don´t think I enjoyed anything of it. But I do think that some of the things said, very few ones, like the conversation between Petula and Virginia, made some sense. And once again, the design is really beautiful. Those made the star and a half.

If you'd like to read my review of Ghostgirl.

Where back in the afterlife with Charlotte, and things don't look so good. After graduation Charlotte seems to be all alright with herself, who she is, and where she is heading. Thing is after the glamour goes off, she is back where she started, being invisible. All her friends are busy with afterlife phonecalls, and reunions, to even glance at her. This doesn't bother her so much, that is until her new friend Maddy come's into the picture.

Maddy likes to feed Charlottes insecurities. Why? I won't tell you, read the book! And bonus Scarlett is having doubts about her relationship, and Petula seems as selfish as ever, even more so now.

Let's talk about the characters. While reading this book I felt like I, and Charlotte along with me, where back at square one. She was as doubful about herself as ever. This did not go good with me. Scarlet went a few nodges down with me, in all, I didn't feel like MY scarlet was in the pages, not until the very end at least. Damen is a minor character, as always. but the character who impresed me in this book was Petula.

In the plot I'd have to say it crossed from unlikely to unbeliavable. Some things happen that would, or most likely could never happen, and that I didn't think was the best for the story. It started out very slow, a lot of inner chatter that really didn't gave us anything new. Heaven as a phone bank? I got it, sould in the afterlife being our inner chatter and guiding us, it was interesting to see another person's view of the afterlife.

This book has it ups, and it has its down, but all in all it's an ok read. I would read it for it being the second book in the series.

One thing I most liked about this, and the first book, its the intro's to the different chapters. It has messages that are very much true, like for example:

"Trust is not a given. In any relationship, it is the hardest thing to earn and the easiest to lose. In fact, the only words harder than "I don't love you anymore" are "I don't trust you anymore." The former has everything to do with somene else. There is nothing you can do about a change of heart. The latter has everything to do with you."

It makes you think doesn't it? There are a lot more of this in the pages. And finally the ending. While it was a good ending, I thought it resembled the first one too much. It was rushed, but not so, and at parts a little like 'when did this happend?'

Well there you go, my Ghostgirl:Homecoming review. I could go on rambling, but I can't give out spoilers- not any more anyways. Woot! A review! I thought this one would not see the light of day Lol

Now that Charlotte has finally graduated from Dead Ed, she will be going to Heaven, right? Nope.

Instead, she is stuck giving advices to troubled teens through a hotline by being their "conscience". Except, she never gets any calls. Fun. Is this how the Afterlife supposed to be?

Damen is at college now and Scarlet feels that their relationship is slowly deteriorating. Her utmost popular sister, Petula, is getting glammed up for homecoming. But unexpectedly, she falls into a coma after a bad pedicure. Even though she is annoying, Scarlet still loves her sister deep down. She has to get her back before she really does die. She must get Charlotte's help.

I am very disappointed to say but the sequel had let me down even more than the first. Charlotte was less annoying now, that is for sure. But for everyone else, all of their actions seemed very unintelligent. What was happening throughout the story did not make a lot of sense. You could understand what was going on but what the characters did were a little on the "Huh?" side. It was unrealistic, considering that it was already a supernatural genre, and I couldn't connect with the book.

The most ridiculous thing was why in the heck world would Scarlet seek out Charlotte to help her sister? In what way could she possibly aid the situation? She was dead. And Scarlet, idiotically, got herself in coma so she could contact Charlotte. I was, "What the hell??" the whole time. From beginning to end, the plot is just plain ludicrous.

The people in Ghostgirl were like cartoon characters, not real at all. Everyone went one way or the other without any dynamics in their personality. For example, the environmentalist guy would always go back to talking about the world's health at one point or another if you were to have a conversation with him. The only part I liked was when Petula finally showed her human side with the child star, Virginia, when they were both on the verge of death.

I do not recommend this novel at all.

I can envision Ms. Hurley as a very likeable Goth. She's fun, quirky and an all-around sarcasm-user, that's for sure. Wtih Charlotte and her friends, Hurley creates a world of life and death that is humorous, loving, and not at all macabre. Although I would have enjoyed the occasional Poe-style horror.

Sometimes, though, the way Hurley writes just rubs me the wrong way. Several times through out the book, I had to keep reminding myself that it wasn't Hurley's thoughts resonating through the words, it was Charlotte's. Only Hurley's ideas and themes can actually permeate the story.

The problem is, Charlotte sometimes comes off as a very whiny, but invisible, girl. She's not (I guess you could say) strong at all. Yet, there's something about this imperfect, ungeneric girl that makes me titter a little on the inside.

The Velma-like or Holmes-like ending of "I knew it all along" also bugged me a little. I mean, yes, you could see everything happening, and yes, a lot of the time the main character always figures it out but doesn't tell anyone, but the way it was phrased, the way she just sort of goes "Oh, right! I knew that!" after everyone's already had a say was just...pathetic.

The life stories were interesting, though. Sometimes, it was a bit too interesting and over-powered the story a little too much. But at the same time, it gave insight into what the author wanted us to realize, which was wonderfully refreshing.

Well, ghostgirl: Homecoming was a good book; I liked it, and like the review said, if you're a fan of Tim Burton, you'd like it. Also, if you're a person looking for an easy read with minimal brain power needed to analyze the text for theme, tone, and dilemmas, this is a book for you to rest easy and enjoy a purple-y humorous boook.

This is one of those "horror lite" books - Charlotte has graduated from Dead Ed. and is stuck in customer service (which consists of waiting for Those in Need to call in for help, at which point she's supposed to act as that small, still voice that gives them good advice). She's living with Maddy, who appears to be one of those controlling friends that doesn't want Charlotte's old friends to be a part of her life; those old friends have reunited with people from their pasts and seem to be settling in to eternity rather well. Enter Charlotte's still-living BFF Scarlett, whose sister Petula is in a coma and whose boyfriend Damen isn't around as much as she'd like... By the end, Charlotte has "grown" as a dead person, Petula is slightly nicer, Maddy's been vanquished and Scarlett and Damen are solidly a couple.

While the book is, for the most part, quite charming, and those that know the horror genre will enjoy the shout-outs to horror Names (Charlotte's an Usher, for example), the ending is a bit unsatisfying. Charlotte's solving a problem like Maddy seems to be a little abrupt: there's nothing in the previous chapters that would allow one to make the leaps that she makes in terms of understanding what's going on, and I hate solutions that take place off-stage with no hope of following along.

Still, for those for whom that isn't a problem this will be a really fun read. And count me in on hoping for another in the series.

Since I was 15 at the time, Homecoming wasn't as good for me as the first book. I did have some fun over the exploration of "the afterlife". But the storyline wasn't really my thing. Nonetheless, I enjoyed (I still do) the design of the book, which is similar to the first one. The famous people phrases, I believed are a nice touch that I haven't seen in one other book.

No me gusta dejar sagas incompletas.

I got the ARC of this book and I wanted to see what happened, seeing how the last one ended. I was so surprised at the turn this book took! First off, it's much better than the first one and I really liked the first one. This one is much deeper, but still has that hysterical wit and can stand on it's own. The author upped her game even more here. this is what good writing is all about. I can't wait to get the finished book this summer. this is definitely THE book for summer reading. LOVE IT!!!!!

Maybe I should have read the first book in this series before this one. There's a lot of references that made no sense to me. I have no idea how Charlotte died. The Dead Ed only made sense after awhile. None of the characters made me give a damn about them. Petula is a bitch, plain and simple. She could have died and I would have cheered. I won't be looking for anymore in this series. Including the first book.

Ugh...I really wanted to like this book but...well, it was only ok. I rolled my eyes throughout reading it. I felt the story was forced and it didn't flow very well. I like to connect to the characters I read about but I didn't like any of them. I slimmed through the middle and the end in hopes to quickly finish and never open it again.
