This charming Easter tale from talented author-illustrator Jerry Smath tells the story of Easter Bunny, his three helpers--Willa, Bella, and Jellybean--and an adventure-filled egg painting contest.
Easter Bunny has always painted all the Easter Eggs himself, but this year his eyes are tired! So he holds an Easter Egg Painting Contest among his helpers to find the best new design. Inspired by a lighthouse at the seashore, Willa Bunny paints bold red stripes on her egg. Jellybean Bunny paints pretty spring flowers on his egg in the country. But Bella Bunny gets lost in the woods, trying to follow drifting clouds. When night arrives, stars appear--giving Bella the idea to paint golden stars on her egg. And who's the winner of the contest? All three little bunnies!
Just one of those simple little supermarket books that work so well for some children. I know that child me would have loved this and read it to pieces. Otoh, if your library doesn't have it, it's not worth tracking down, imo. Smath has a subtle magic touch and I will continue to look for more by him after discovering him via But No Elephants.
I really enjoyed reading this book, especially because Easter is right around the corner. This story isn't just fun to read, it also teaches a message about working together. The Easter Bunny's helpers each try to find a design that will win the contest, but at the end the Easter Bunny makes them all winners. This way, each helper will get to paint their designs on the Easter eggs, making it an easier process and a happier Easter for everyone. I really think it is important for children to read this book so that they can grasp the concept of how positive working together can be, as well as sharing because the helpers shared the prize of winning. This book was new to me, I had never read it as a child, but I really enjoyed reading this short and sweet story!
Each year, the Easter Bunny painted every Easter egg all by himself. His helpers, Willa, Jellybean, and Bella have special jobs to do, too! then, Bella commented about how pretty the Easter Bunny's polka dot eggs were. He tells her that he needs a new design this year, and the three are more than glad to help! They then set off in search of a new design! Willa loves the ocean, so she heads there. Jellybean loves Spring, so he went to the country to paint flowers. Bella, on the other hand, somehow disappeared! When Jellybean and Willa come back to the Easter Bunny's house, and Bella doesn't, what will they do? This is such a sweet book, perfect for the Easter season. Still looking for my favorite childhood Easter book. This isn’t it either.
I was skeptical of the quality of this book given the cover art, it just suggested a generic and mediocre story. But I actually thought the story was good, it had a compelling but straightforward plot for a children’s book. The Easter Bunny’s three young helpers want to help paint eggs, so he has a contest and whoever comes up with the best design, will get to paint the design on eggs that year. So they each set off and find inspiration. The art has lot of color and is attractively done. I liked this one, and think it would particularly appeal to creative kids who enjoy drawing and coloring.
This is actually the best book in existence, thank you. If you want to bless your children’s childhood, buy this immediately! Actually, screw the children, buy this for yourself! Go on a deep, emotional journey learning about the limits and danger of creativity. This book WILL change your life!
I've had this book for years and confess that I've never actually read it until this year, when it was one of our nightly story time selections. Sweet story. :)
My son loves this book so much. I wondered if he still would, now that he is eight. He still does. He read it to me this year and he was inspired, as always, to create his own beautiful eggs. He would definitely give this book 5 stars.
In this secular Easter story, the Easter bunny has three little helpers. These young bunnies compete with one another to design a new pattern for the Easter eggs. The friendly competition results in each bunny finding inspiration in his/her surroundings and all three sharing the final task of decorating the eggs. Warm feelings abound in this short tale. I liked that nature inspired two of the bunnies' patterns; this will be a good idea when T and I are painting. Otherwise, I didn't find this book to be especially special. T really liked it though and was enthusiastic about reading and reviewing it. Just goes to show that an adult's and a kid's take on kids' books aren't the same.
T's Review (age 3)
After reading: T, pointing to the Easter bunny on the final page: He's driving them to children!
V: Yes, he is! Are you excited for Easter?
T: Yes. And for Christmas!
V: What are you excited about for Easter?
T: Going Easter Egg Hunt at the library!
V: If you were the Easter bunny's helper what would your design be?
V: Which helper's design did you like the best? Why?
T: The stars because I really liked the stars.
V: If you could ask the Easter bunny a question what would you ask him?
T: I would ask, "Why did you paint the stars?" Her! I would ask her, "Why did you get lost?" (One of the bunny's helpers got lost while painting in the forest.)
