The book was first released on occasion of the European tour of MOMA in 1995. It has excellent essay by Peter Galassi who was the chief curator of the dept of photography. The book is treasure house of photographs that document the history of US. The earliest photograph is that by Jacob Riis (1888) and the latest is that by Diane Arbus (1967). The book is also available as free download from the MOMA website
