I really didnt enjoy this book. I have read other books of Sam and liked them but this just wasnt for me. I felt it had a complicated timeline and I couldnt connect to the characters. I felt it was a frustrating book that just didnt grab me and became annoying. It jumped all over the place and I couldnt wait to finish it so I could read a new book. Having said all this the last 6 chapters were the best chapters of the whole book.

In dit boek heb je 3 verhaallijnen. Het verhaal van Ava dat door haar vader achtergelaten wordt in een weeshuis. Dan heb je het verhaal van Nina , haar man Mick en haar dochter Josie en dan heb je het verhaal van Francesca en Adam. Maar wie behoort tot het verleden en wie tot het heden. Of behoort het heden tot het verleden ? En wie is de vrouw die in het begin van de brug springt om zelfmoord te plegen? Een spannend boek die je gevangen houd tot je zelf beetje bij beetje de puzzelstukjes bij elkaar begint te leggen. Zelden geef ik een 5 sterren aan een buitenlandse auteur maar hier verdient dit boek nog meer dan 5 sterren. Geen enkel saai of langdradig moment in het boek, goed plot, goed uitgewerkt. Een echte aanrader.

I enjoyed reading it, I think that Hayes is a good writer, but why is it that most writers are writing about paedophile or incest and do they think that these are the only books that sell. I find women authors are the guiltiest of such books. I would give this book more stars but due to its grotesque content it will get 2

It took me about halfway through the book to start enjoying it. It moved at snails pace and then 'wham' I was hooked and had to keep reading until I reached the end. If you're struggling with this novel do persevere. It's worth it.

I've read 3 Sam Hayes books now and number 4 is sitting beside me. I think I need to wait a few days to let go of the scenes and characters from Tell Tale.

I’ve read 3 of Sam Hayes books and enjoyed them. This one I just couldn’t get into. And I have a huge pile of books to get through. Simply not enough hours in the day to waste on a book I’m not enjoying

"Onder de oppervlakte" is een boek die je vanaf de eerste pagina onder de huid kruipt. Het boek vertelt, alternerend, het verhaal van twee dames: de ene is een grimeuse met een leuk gezinnetje, de andere is een alleenstaande opvoedster in een internaat. Maar er is al heel gauw duidelijk dat het twee dames zijn die een verleden met zich meedragen. Er is ooit iets gebeurd, maar wat in godsnaam? En wat hebben deze twee met elkaar te maken, of zijn het écht twee losstaande verhalen? Wie is er te vertrouwen en wie helemaal niet? En wat heeft dit alles in godsnaam te maken met de vrouw die tijdens het inleidende hoofdstuk zelfmoord pleegde? Heeft die überhaupt eigenlijk wel zelfmoord gepleegd?

Fan-tas-tisch boek waarin de puzzelstukken slechts heel langzaam in elkaar vallen en er een waarheid aan het licht komt die te gruwelijk is voor woorden, over een kostschool en wat zich daar achter de gesloten deuren afspeelde.

"Vertrouw niemand en ga nooit terug," is op een bepaald moment het motto in dit boek. En laat het nou net dit motto zijn dat door één van de hoofdrolspeelsters driftig aan haar broek werd gelapt. Met alle gevolgen vandien.

I wanted something easy to read whilst I was doing my Live Below the Line Challenge but it was a mistake. It was a frustrating book. One of those where there is a "secret" and you know that it will not be revealed until the end but it's alluded to every 30 secs and instead of building suspense it is just annoying. And speaking of annoying the lead character is married to a guy who is her soul mate blah, blah but she can't tell either him or her teenage daughter about her "secret". Sorry but if you can't tell your "soul mate" about your terrible secret - abused as a child/mother at 14/daughter of a Nazi/accidental slayer of ones brother (insert awful secret of choice) then I'm sorry but they are not a "soul mate". Will not read more of hers.

This one didn't really hit the mark for me. While the story was overall enjoyable, the main character of Nina I found extremely frustrating and she had absolutely zero character development, which was further evidenced by the frankly awful romance that comes out of the story. I also found that the author tried to up the suspense factor really quickly but it just didn't make sense to me why the character was so concerned about anything that was going on.

I really couldn't get into this book. I read it in ebook format and the story jumped all over the place without warning which I found confusing. I must admit I skimmed most of it and then skipped to the last chapter just to find out what was going on. Not a great read for me, maybe it would have been better in paperback...

Het eerste personage waarmee de lezer kennismaakt is Nina Kennedy. Ze is getrouwd met Mick en heeft een dochter van vijftien jaar. Nina leidt een beginnend bedrijf waarmee ze succesvol hoopt te worden in de filmindustrie. Toch is niet alles koek en ei en begint Nina zich steeds vreemder te gedragen.

Personage twee is Frankie Gerrard, een jonge vrouw die bij de kostschool Roecliffe aan het werk gaat. Het wordt als snel duidelijk dat ze een verleden heeft waar ze niets over wil vertellen. Ook niet aan haar collega Adam, met wie ze vriendschap sluit.

Als derde hebben we Ava, een meisje van acht jaar oud die door haar vader bij een kindertehuis wordt achtergelaten. Ava ontdekt dat zich in dat tehuis dingen afspelen waar niemand het over wil hebben. De kinderen niet, maar ook de volwassenen zwijgen.

Aanvankelijk lijken het drie afzonderlijke verhalen, maar naarmate het verhaal vordert, wordt het steeds duidelijker dat er toch een verbinding is. Het samensmelten van deze verhalen is bijzonder knap gedaan, want uiteindelijk resulteert dat in één aangrijpend plot.

Onder de oppervlakte begint wat moeizaam, vooral vanwege de verschillende verhaallijnen, maar als je daar eenmaal aan gewend bent geraakt, is het boek moeilijk weg te leggen. De personages zijn prima uitgewerkt en de spanning neemt langzaam toe tot de uiteindelijke climax.

Hoewel het wel steeds duidelijker wordt hoe het uiteindelijk zal aflopen, is deze minimale voorspelbaarheid absoluut niet nadelig voor het verhaal. Want Hayes zorgt ervoor dat de aandacht toch bij het boek, en dus het verhaal, blijft. Dat is een grote verdienste van haar.

Conclusie is dat Onder de oppervlakte een bijzonder goede thriller is waarin een thema voorkomt dat helaas nog steeds actueel is.

My Thoughts:

I was quite surprised how much I enjoyed this book. Normally books that have children on the cover with big bambi eyes I do avoid. This book however is for book group so I did give it ago and was as I say quite surprised.

The story is really good and kept me wanting to find out what was going to happen next. Each chapter ended with not a cliffhanger as such but the need to read to see how it was going to end.

The story line was raw with abuse in a childrens home, this is why I normally avoid books with children on the covers. The story was also a good thriller with plenty of twists and turns.

This next paragraph will contain spoilers.

What I thought was clever was how the author lead me to believe that I was reading three individual characters stories and it turned out that it actually was one person all along. I also didn’t like the ending in the fact that Nina’s husband was the one she was running and hiding from all along. It wouldn’t have made any difference if the hooded figure was never found out.

Overall a really good read although the subject matter was a bit unsettling and I would seek out more book by this author.

In Onder de oppervlakte volg je de verhalen van Ava Atwood, een jong meisje in het kindertehuis Roecliffe, Nina Kennedy, een succesvolle vrouw met een mooi gezin en een prettige baan, en Frances 'Frankie' Gerrard, een geheimzinnige vrouw die gaat werken op de school die Roecliffe is geworden. In de eerste instantie lijken de verhalen niet zoveel met elkaar te maken te hebben, maar hoe verder je komt, hoe meer de geheimen duidelijk worden en hoe meer de verhalen met elkaar worden verweven.

Het verhaal leest prettig weg en de afwisseling tussen de verschillende perspectieven zorgt ervoor dat je verder wilt lezen. Beetje bij beetje kom je steeds meer te weten over hoe de verhalen met elkaar te maken hebben en krijg je steeds meer te horen over de verschrikkingen van Roecliffe. Gedurende het hele verhaal speculeer je mee wat er precies gaande is en probeer je de eindjes aan elkaar vast te knopen.
Het einde zelf was verrassend, maar ik weet niet helemaal of ik het nou bevredigend vond. Het ging me in die zin te snel, terwijl het verhaal zo traag (niet op een vervelende manier) is opgebouwd. Het einde voelde dan een beetje hak op de tak. Als dat beter was geweest, had ik het misschien wel 5 sterren gegeven.

This book just blew my mind, I loved it! I wont lie, I didn't mean to download this book, it was part of a multi pack download from the author. Once I finished a previous book I couldn't remember what this was about so I just started it with a fresh outlook and I am so glad I did.
As a parent myself I tend to stay away from these kind of books as they are a bit too much for me at times but Sam Hayes really pulled me in with her story line. Instead of focusing on the unnecessary details of the act itself she really took me through the aftermath, how it effected each person individually and that to me is way more important.
I loved the way I was kept on my toes all the way through, I tend to go into smug mode when reading a book and presume I know what the story line or so called 'twists' will be, not with his book! Every time I thought I knew what was coming there was another turn and it pulled away from the predictable plot twists others are so fond of. Once I started I couldn't put it down, I was up most of the night and finished this book within a couple of days, when I did finish the only word I could say was "wow".


Give it a go. Well worth it.

The good thing about the book is that the plot is very interesting. The bad thing is that it is not very well written. For the sake of maintaining the suspense, the narrator keeps changing from first person to third person and back. And the villain is conveniently a hooded figure whose face is never seen by the protagonist - so obviously, it is going to be the one person who is supposed to be the nicest guy in the book! The protagonist suffered from sexual abuse as a child, has seen a child-like figure being abused for most of her growing up years. Yet, yet, she is completely oblivious to something happening right under her nose!
For all the problems that Ava faced, I found her character puzzling and sometimes irritating. She seemed extremely self-centred and worried only about herself. The character of Adam too, was strange. I never understood his character's motivations or behaviour in the book.
All in all, this is an ok read - if you don't think about the plot too much and you are ok with the gimmicky multiple narrative voices.

Она нашла удивительные, цепкие, запоминающиеся слова, которые сделали эту книгу обязательной к прочтению для меня. Вот только я никак не ожидала того, какая это жестокая книга, какая она трудная, какую эмоциональную боль причиняет психически здоровому человеку. Я не готова оказалась ни к этому сюжету, ни к честности, ни к той правде, которая в итоге показала себя во всей красе. Но то, что я не смогла лечь спать, не прочитав всю эту книгу, потому что, как сказала моя хорошая знакомая, "не смогла предать ее", говорит о большом таланте автора и о важности темы. Книга не психологична, она скорее событийна, и в этом ее ценность, потому как события, в ней описанные, имеют колоссальное значение, бьют точно в цель, - по чувствам, по разуму, по реальности, по всем границам, которые каждый из нас старательно выстраивает для себя. Всем советую, но будьте осторожны, приготовиться к этой книге просто нельзя.

In Das Verbotene Zimmer nutzt die englische Autorin Sam Hayes drei zeitlich versetzte Handlungsebenen, die offenbar etwas miteinander zu tun haben, ohne das zuerst klar wird, was. Erzählt wird mal in erster Person, mal in dritter.
Diese verwirrend eingesetzten, stark konstruierten Schreibtechniken irritieren. Ich halte das für eine schriftstellerische Schwäche. Auch bei der Charakterisierung der Figuren kann man nicht ganz zufrieden sein.
Nina, Ava, Frankie hätten das Potential als interessante Figuren gehabt, aber es dauert ziemlich lange, bis man mit ihr warm wird.
Der Plot ist letztlich konventionelle Thrillerkost. Hinzu kommt, dass der Roman anfangs wenig Schwung hat und sich streckenweise zieht, man könnte auch sagen, es dümpelt vor sich hin. Hart für ungeduldige Leser. Später nimmt die Handlung glücklicherweise an Tempo zu. Am Ende gibt es sogar Dramatik. Das ändert nichts daran, dass der durchschnittliche Roman einfach zu lang ist.

omg OMG! …. lost for words…

Samantha Hayes! ….You extraordinary woman! What complex, horrific, brutal and brilliant web you weave…. I’m left reeling and shocked…. Literally I’ve just finished reading this book. I don’t know what to say ( unusual for me I know) I want more, I need the light and happiness of Ava/Nina and Josie, I need to know that they found life and love. Good fortune and …. I can’t even begin to explain. This is the second 5star review I’ve left for you in the last two days ( two books… feels like a lifetime of trauma and wonderment) I’m not going to give away anything. But just read this. I like to think I pretty eloquent and high brow with my reading and my discernment with book. I read mostly a book every two days… or more if I can get away with it. But this story has literally blown me away. 20 earth shattering stars from me. Incredible.

Just wow!

This had me hooked, the storyline kept me up and at times I felt like I was trying to connect the dots... unsuccessfully. The ending was so powerful, and although some would find it a hard read, it was respectfully and powerfully written throughout. The characters will haunt my thoughts for a while, and every book written by Samantha Hayes has me gripped!

This was abit of a rollercoaster for me….

It’s told in different points of view and different timelines but it’s so hard to work out who was talking and where they fitted in the story. To be completely honest i felt like i was reading 3 separate stories every chapter. Everything is just so confusing and slow

But the last few chapters where things all come together were really good and i enjoyed them. But i can’t rare this higher than 2 stars because it was such a drag to read.

Wát was dit een goed boek! Wel een triggerwarning betreffend kindermisbruik.

Verhaal zat enorm goed in elkaar. 3 verschillende verhaallijnen die aan het einde ineens heel logisch zijn en aan elkaar gelinkt zijn. Zielig, mooi, meelevend en spannend. Dit boek had het allemaal. En nog een gigantische plottwist aan het einde die ik niet had aan zien komen. Dit boek neemt je zo mee dat uiteindelijk alle puzzelstukjes in elkaar vallen. Absolute aanrader!!

Про главную героиню стало ясно ещё в середине книги, дальше читала перемоткой, так как было скучно. А вот концовка действительно удивила, описание не обмануло. Закончилось всё сумбурно и смято. В общем, разочарована. А общее впечатление от сюжета довольно мерзкое. Зная о чём книга, читать бы не начала.

Spannend van begin tot eind!! Het verhaal is heel mooi in elkaar gezet. Het klopt gewoon goed in elkaar. Er staan geen jaartallen bij, maar je weet gewoon wanneer je in t heden of verleden bent. Een aanrader!
