Nicky Sullivan nurses injured animals...but now she's going to heal herself. She flees to a South Carolina barrier island and discovers a kindred spirit in Mac Moultrie, a salty retired fisherman. They ease into a leisure routine of shrimping in the marsh...unaware of a murder committed to snatch old slave lands from a young black woman. From the moment Nicky lays eyes on Trippett Alston, she's smitten. This Southern gentleman, however, is more interested in fighting off the condominium development threatening his beloved island and its turtle nesting grounds than in the "Yankee Gal." Nicky and Trip are destined for each other, but their allegiance to old causes, and the dark forces swirling around the island threaten to keep them apart.
Contemporary fiction writer, Rose Senehi, is noted for weaving historical data into her romantic thrillers. FALLING OFF A CLIFF is a story of two women a generation apart and from two different worlds who are driven by passion to heal no matter what dangers they have to face. In the 1920s, Lula Mae clings to a doctor woman as they gallop horseback all over the steep, harsh Blue Ridge Mountains. In the 60s, Nurse Holly travels the same mountain paths to reach the ill and search for the mother she's never known. CATCHING FIRE, awarded the 2019 Historical Book Award by the NC Society of Historians, Inc., tells of the heroism displayed by hundreds of firefighters to extinguish the horrific Party Rock Fire that raged through the mountains surrounding Lake Lure, NC. Woven throughout this tale of two firefighters in love, yet, torn apart by swirling suspicions and mistrust, is the story of a family struggling with its past in the frightening present. CAROLINA BELLE, A Love Story, is her eighth novel and takes place in an apple orchard in Hendersonville, NC. Read this novel, and you'll never look at an apple the same way again. Among her seven "stand-alone" novels that take place in the Southern Blue Ridge are "Dancing on Rocks," winner of the 2014 Indi-Reader Discovery Award for Popular Fiction, "Render Unto the Valley," awarded the 2012 IPPY Gold Medal for Fiction--Southeast., "In the Shadows of Chimney Rock", a finalist for the SIBA 2009 Book of the Year Award, and "The Wind in the Woods", a finalist for the Thomas Wolfe Memorial Award. All of her novels are part family saga, part mystery, and part love story.
What a great book. A nice easy read. The characters were easy to get to know and the storyline was smooth. I will definitely be reading more of her books.
Nicky Sullivan gives her life to nurturing others: her mother and brother, animals she rescues – everyone but herself. When she is given the opportunity for a beach vacation, we wonder whether she can actually use it to recharge and give attention to creating the exquisite drawings that have been her sustenance. Of course she finds others to care for – delightful characters: Mac, the grizzled shrimp fisherman and Uta the “turtle lady.” Trip Alston, son of a wealthy family, seems more interested in saving his beloved island from condominium developers than in romance. There’s even a murder to solve. But in the end, this is a love story about the Carolina low country and the people who are a part of it. Senehi writes about women who discover inner strength and love of the land.
A nice story that takes place just down the road from me near McClennanville. The author was local, and as a side note owned the house my cousin just bought, and has written other lowcountry books. I enjoyed her easy style and she used just about every "southern style item" there is...the food, the shag dance, the turtles, the lifestyle, the clothing, etc. No great all American novel, but a fun story to read.
