Basic plot for each story: Flash lands in strange world and meets princess [insert name here]. OH NO A MONSTER IS ATTACKING!! Flash strikes a faithful blow and saves the day! On too the next adventure! Joking aside I had fun. 4 stars.
To be fair, I honestly know nothing about Flash Gordon. So the fact I'm otherwise walking into the middle of a story is incredibly disorienting. Thankfully, this comic serials reprint gives you an overview of what the plot was up to the current point, though I wonder if it's a blessing as much as you think it would be.
Flash Gordon is a product of the 1930's on, and the writing shows it. He's a Mary Sue through and through, and the plots are incredibly simple with incompetent villains abound. On the other hand, stories of a hero on an alien world, fighting monsters and alien technology abound with beautiful women? That sounds a little cool to be honest, which is why I gather the serial lasted as long as it did. As it was with a lot of the stories that came out during that time, it has all the elements for something grand, but the execution was off.
All the same, what I cannot diss and give all my kudos for is the art of Al Williamson, who takes his job seriously in regards to this otherwise silly (by today's standards) comic. Say what you will about Flash Gordan, but the art behind the man was top notch and deserves a look at. For the comic appreciator, that is. Common readers need not apply lest they love looking through comic history.
