My kids are studying Church History this year and this is one of the suggested books. It is listed as “optional” in the schedule, but we read this one. I read it aloud to my teenagers, but I did not like it at all. The idea is that the book talks about some aspect of Church History and then provides original documents to back up what is said. Sounds great in theory, but in practice there was a lot of jumping from one subject to another. It was very hard to follow. I also found the vocabulary a bit challenging, and the kids were often totally lost.
I won’t be reading the sequel to the kids, this is one “optional” book that I wish that we had skipped.
This book is a great introduction to early church history. It provides many primary sources on the subjects in the book, all from authors during that time period. A great resource for school projects or just to learn about this fascinating time in history. However, the writing style is very dry, so be prepared to go slowly.
