Like this book uses NYT examples, someone should do the same with The Economist. The best part of the book was the last part - short and succinct- titled “More Masterly ways with Words”. Buying the next one now.
A surprisingly interesting book. Essentially this is a book of words that can enhance a writer's ability and a reader's understanding, but each word is illustrated with a passage from the New York Times, a technique that provides additional flavor and substance. The one drawback is that the passages may actually distract from learning the word's meaning as they sometimes carry the attention into whatever topic being noted. Still, it does make the book very readable. After the A to Z compilation are a series of very useful chapters that look at word usage and punctuation.
Surprisingly glib and readable, this book shines in its examples drawn from New York Times articles. The last section, "More Masterly Ways With Words," is not to be missed.
