Colonial America battled not only the British, but also prejudice and hatred between the white settlers and Native Americans. This is the story of an unlikely love story that crosses all boundaries.
Marla Fair's family history is nearly that of Troy itself. Still here after 160 years, Marla and her husband, David, own a downtown business. She teaches art at the Hayner Cultural Center and is an historic interpreter, as well as a novelist.
As the author, I thought I would cross-post some reviews from Amazon.
Copperhead is a very well written historical novel set in the era just prior to the Revolutionary War. The location is North Carolina on a plantation and the main characters are a retired British general and his family and a young injured Indian boy. The plot centers around the attempts of the retired soldier to heal and save the life of the Indian despite the wishes of his son and his family, who want to kill the savage. A granddaughter falls in love with the Indian, causing his banishment to England. The writing gives the feel of the period without being over done and offers enough period language to make the story feel authentic, yet leaves enough in common English to allow the story to move quickly and flow easily. One of the best stories I hard read while judging, despite the fact that I rarely, if ever, read historical fiction. -- Frederick S. Goethel, Amazon Top Reviewer, Amazon Breakthrough Novelist contest 2008
...the novel's portraits of life in both Colonial America and 18th-century England ring true. -- manuscript review by Publishers Weekly, an independent organization
It isn't often that a story is set in the era between the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War. So often they take place during one of those wars. It also is out of the ordinary for a novel that is not labeled as young adult to begin with the characters not yet on the brink of adulthood. In Marla Fair's COPPERHEAD the combination of these two uncommon elements makes for an uncommonly pleasant reading adventure. The historical detail is enough to set the scene without overshadowing it, and the characters act true to their period, rather than be 21st personalities dropped in another time. -- Beth Henderson, Author of over 25 books
The author is a painter - painting with words. Wonderfully descriptive and well-written piece, I enjoyed every word!-- Ann Kullberg, Artist, Seattle WA
I can seriously see myself with a diet Coke in one hand, chips in the other, a cup of salsa sitting on my chest, (making it easier to dip the chips into)and reading this novel on a warm summer day by the beach. I'd be amazed if this is a first time effort. The writing is excellent, the structure captivating. The character's are easy to know, and while I'm not a historical romance fan, this is great mind candy. -- Louann Carrol
